New Discoveries 6Ts/7Ts Northern & Rare Soul

New Discoveries 6ts/7ts Northern & Rare Soul:

Ok, we have plenty of talk about new discoveries, so what about a discussion on recent discoveries or the lack of them...shall we say over the last 2 years ?.

Have all the good 6ts/7ts dried up, or are there still plenty out there, & just needs someone to be in a position to expose them properly.

'All the good 6ts tunes have been discovered' -This was the main driving force behind Stafford & the DJ team that went about proving that statement wrong....we all look back on Stafford as an iconic venue, breaking masses of new tunes & breaking the mould, but there really was an air that the 'good' records had been already discovered, prior to the Top of the World & also the legenday 100 Club Nighters -

So c'mon Soul Sourcers, tell us about ya new discoveries or new discoveries that are being played at your fave venue or by your fave DJ....there are no restrictions on rariety, just good soulful dance records that fit the Northern/Rare Soul criteria....

& play nice pse people

Russ

the harper bros 45 is a decent enough tune, the chorus and organ break make the record, however,i reckon its quite a rare item so it probably wont see any decent deck action, the tune could be a good nighter play! the sun & rain tune again is a decent x/over tune but not likely to get some action other than blasting it at home!

I do agree that its pretty rare seen a few on ebay but not any huge amounts.

Hi Russ,i think key to your post is "position to expose" the tunes.Only a few will have truly discovered unknowns lately.

Here's one that might fit the bill.Unknown to many? Don't know.Not a stomper,xover maybe.

Little Denise Stevenson - Would it be me.

isn't this a known funk record?

Russ

I went to the last Burnley allnighter and for the first four hours there were loads of underplayed 60s uptempo soul records being spun. I recognised a few and they were only £30 records in the day. But from a refreshing point of view it was great to listen to something new.

The only problem was that the first two DJs did not use the mic so you did not know the names of the tunes. But they did play some good stuff......a breath of fresh air!.....and thank you, if you read this post.

I will try and add one of mine if I can work out how to do it. Ha Ha

Here's another one. This is credited as Willie & West ( on the tube) which was from a second issue Lp made in the 70s. The original was an Lp only track by Willie and the Mighty Magnificents on an All Platinum LP. It was played briefly in the 70s at the Casino by Keith Minshull which made nearly £300 on an auction site lately

Again this is off the tube, no sign of the All Platinum copy

The Willie & West hardly falls into the unknown category. Played by Levine at the Mecca and been a collected album ever since. I'm speculating but guess that dozens if not hundreds of copies have passed through the UK soul scene in the last couple of decades.

I'm also not sure that the Willie & Mighty Magnificents version is the original one as you claim. Some Willie and West tracks were re-issued with some Mighty Magnificents tracks on a Japanese P-Vine album in about 1980. The version of GAFMG is, if I remember, slightly different.

The Wilie & Mighty Magnificents is the original LP and very rare, it is on All Platinum. The Willie & West is a 70s probably made by members of the band and is a reissue and there probably are loads of copies of that.

That is why the All Platinum LP made good money on an auction site and I have one.

Your post is incorrect, I'm afraid. The Willie & West album is not IN ANY SENSE a reissue. The alternate version of "Get Away" does indeed feature on the rare Wille & Magnificents album "Very Soulful" but that was released on All Platinum AFTER the Willie & West album.

Again, the JT Carter record has been collected for about twenty five years. This is the b-side of Closer To Your Heart and is probably even worse.

I agree with you about that, But your average northern souler who went to Wigan or Stafford would not know it as it was played for the other side. Not at Wigan or Stafford but maybe near where you live.

The 100 CluB is where I went to in the 80s n they did have their own sounds there like Wigan did

I have been spinning the sun & rain over a year in Hamburg + @ hip city once and it went down very well everytime !!!! If ya spin it to an open minded crowd with some known northern with a similar tempo it works a treat. But as always newish tunes have to be mixed in quite nicely in order to work....

But for me a current biggie is this marc Forrest spin altough he has been spinning it for some time !!!!!

and lots of stuff played at the last Hip City Anniversary !!!!

This topic is supposed to be about 'unknowns'. The JT Cater is a known record. Your assertion that "your average northern souler who went to Wigan or Stafford would not know it" is bonkers.

Who in their right mind would flag up a genuinely unknown 'scene-worthy' record on this thread?

Madness thread Russ! Close it down before it descends into another 'bitchslap fest' between the half dozen or so who are genuinely interested

One mans known another mans unknown.....one mans newie another mans oldie - not to mention the ladies  - and so the thread goes on....and on....

Yes I agree with you

The United Sounds is one of the best things to found in recent years. The best era to look for is probably the 70's. Still unearthing complete unknowns from this time. Over the last couple of years the best I found was Ishola Muhammed on Guess but there are a whole bunch more. Several of which I have as c/up's. :wicked:

Russ...listen to Steve, it will all end badly with very few genuinely new discoveries being put forward because the people (often DJs) who found them are not overly keen on giving every other DJ details of a record they might have spent hours/days/weeks/years to find.

I'm genuinely sorry if people dont think this is a worthy topic for a thread, but I thought it would be an interesting discussion at least...I was just trying to keep things upbeat & interesting/

I would add that one prominent DJ has already PM'd me two very good tunes that were unknown to me, so just for that alone it has been worth while.

Anyhoo...lets let it run & see where it goes, keep it positive...

Wonder why didn't they share it on the board though, mate?

Re; United Sounds....these things are always up for debate, but from my research, there's four copies currently known. One in the UK, two in the US, and I believe one in Europe. Currently very tough, to say the least.....if anybody knows of any other copies around, then I'd love to hear it!

Well I spose if you've worked hard to find em you may not wanna let everyone into the secret too soon...any copies turn up would love to have a crack at one pse.

Sorry Russ, didn't mean to be so negative. It's a potentially interesting topic but previous experience of similar topics is that they end up descending into the oldie/newie, ovo/boot debate far too quickly. To help make up for being miserable I'll add my contribution :D . I do not claim it's undiscovered, unknown etc.....just that I did not know it until about six months ago when I listened to a copy in Andy Dysons sales box and then bought it off him.

A quick search on YouTube for 'unknown Northern Soul' brings back a play box full of results. Of course there are plenty of discoveries yet to be made. I'll bet that there are 100s, probably 1000s of tracks sitting in collections and unknown to all except the owner.

Here's three that I've picked up in recent months (each of which I've shared here before):

'ere you go Russ, may not be strictly new discoveries, but I bet the x20 discs you've just inspired me to dig out are not known by all:

:g::thumbsup:
