After reading the Footsie thread last night , like many others I went searching for my own live recordings .Although I only made a couple it got me thinking

Were portable tape recorders acceptable to the Casino management / DJs at the time ?

What about these days , DJs with exclusives etc ?

Apologies If this has been done before

Steve. Half the time at the Casino the tape recorder was put on the stage and covered with a coat , jacket etc me thinks it was for a couple of reasons. (1) to stop the tape getting nicked ( 2 ) the DJs couldnt see it recording there exclusive big tunes. Not that the sound quality was good enough to copy onto a acetate anyway.Well i didnt think so from the tapes i heard. Before i had posted this Pete S gave a answer so i amended mine.

Not sure about the DJ's not giving a toss about plugging the tape recorder dirrectly into the decks, I remember when Ian Clarck did a spot at the Abingdon niter in 79 and some chap called Steve from Aldershot did just that and nocked out a bunch of acetates, caused an uproar it did.

Yes you're right actually. While I do have a couple of tapes off the decks, that probably was the wrong description. What I should have said was that I've recorded with a tape recorder actually perched on top of one of the big speakers on the stage while chatting to Richard...it was never a problem

I used to go to Abingdon - nice local all nighter - still took all day Sunday to get home!! That would have been Steve Jeffreys from Aldershot, now dead. Younger brother Gary was well known, but killed in a car crash coming back from Whitchurch all dayer in 1978.

He didn't plug into the decks, just put the mike under them, not even near the speakers, so the quality was laughably bad - even so, Clarky was quite rightly somewhat upset!

I remember that night . What a character though Steve Jeffries. Had some good records of his own as well from what I can remember.

Lot of venues were littered with cassette recorders near the stage - lots of girls took them too. (I got my brand new Grundig confiscated by da management once at a near empty all dayer at the Heavy Steam Machine in Stoke). But Wigan was most definitely the most taped venue ever.

Guest in town Mikey

Taped a few nights at Stafford

Had my tape recorder there one night , and while we were in the upstairs room waiting for the main hall to open, the unit broke down for about half an hour. I just popped a tape in my recorder, trned the volume up to full, and a few people danced. They seemed to have so much energy they would dance to anything

Got my recorder confiscated at the Heavy Steam Machine as well!

Even had the cheek to erase the one side i´d done the previous night at Wigan.

The reason given was that they were worried that "spies" may be in about the disco lights etc  think it was that paranoid fat b´stard though!!

Steve

They erased my tape too - or to be more correct they stuck it into record mode and left it in the manager's office. On playback I could just make out saxie russell as the door opened and shut! Also had a pile of records nicked that day (including a UK Carl Douglas GO mint demo). Not a good day! Should have been though; every top name jock was there but only maybe 30 people showed up!
