chris was running the i.s.c., responsible also for the imfamous o.o.t.p. bootlegs which came in the wake of the success of both the torch & wheel. there had to be a demand for displaying allegiances as well as having the latest tunes, so there was a range of badges including i.s.c., right on, the catacombs etc. always thought that the black badge was classy & traditionalist as opposed to what looked run-of-the-mill. so at first they appeared on jacket pockets & collared t-shirts, eventually morphing to holdalls, by this time it would be mecca & wigan era, so there would be considerably more choice. think there were bagdes for va-vas & the pendulum, steam machine, top rank, hanley...later on heart of england soul club, yate, cleethorpes....and so on & so forth. there's probably far more knowledgeable people on the subject on here than me, but one things for certain, theyve always been collectable if not as valuable as vinyl....suppose that also applies to membership cards.

Excellent, I would say that you are VERY knowledgeable on the subject. Thank you

dunno about that steve, age-wise i just missed the torch & wheel ( would have been about 13 or 14 ) but obviously still at school and underage when went to the catacombs......and so were many others!, but im not an anorak on the badges...just that the quallty, colour and imagination that went into them, got better. i guess the image you posted up sums up what was felt people wanted at the time, to make a statement.....or, its certainly what chris thought...although the ulterior motive, of course, was to make money and he certainly did cash in there for a short period in our history. the badge is plain but essentially descriptive in that format.

Those badges were available in Ruby Red Records in Wolverhampton, from Barmy Barry in Dudley and everywhere really, in the end there must have been at least two dozen different ones, I remember buying a black and white one with a first on it bearing the legend "Keep the faith" when I was 14, my Mom sewed it on my jeand and a girl down the street going "Keep the earth, what's that?"

Anyway they were something like 30p each, there's numerous ads in B & S and Black Music showing the entire set of them.

Also have a look at a Contempo compilation from 74/75 as it has loads of them on the cover.

They used to sell 'em in the booths on Blackpool Pleasure Beach...I suppose at the time they were like One Direction posters.

This ad is from new year 73/74 and shows the white Torch badge.

I was looking for the ads in B&S that showed the full load of ISC badges for "Soul Lancashire", "Soul Yorkshire", "Soul Ashby De La Zouch" etc. Remember at the time being confused by the Yogi Bear ones. As an aside, I couldn't work out why my sister would not get me(at 14 years old) a Torch badge when she went. Eventually7 I got a Major Lance Torch badge, but unpicked the Torch bit so it was just a Major Lance badge.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen one of these white 'Torch' badges?

I got it at the 'Torch' but never seen another white one, all the ones I have seen

have been the normal black design. Obviously there must be more white ones

out there, but not seen another one recently.

yep ive one..plus one with an image of major lance..Chris Burton/ISC did loads of badges in the early 70's...

This is the first Torch Badge, note the sqaure design, now owned by the Class of 72 charity fund and will part of the humongous raffle at the 2013 gathering of the clans, we are indebted to Austin King for his generosity.

That's excellent! Never seen one in that format, I have the original black one, but it's not square. I wonder if that's where the Casino got the idea from when they gave out the 3rd anniversary one on a piece of white cloth to cut out yourselves?
