Truly Forgotten Oldies

Recommended Posts

Some DJ's have a great knack for reactivating those barely remembered choons from years gone by...........whether they have been rested, rare & never turned up, never booted, only played a hand ful of times or whatever, I have great admiration for the DJ that digs these up & plays them out & they receive a whole new lease of life, some of them are almost like newies to a lot of the scene for one reason or another.

So go on Soul Sources lets hear your personal selections for a reactivation of a forgotten oldie.........forgotten being the key element here, please none of the top 500 & lets not get into the debate about whats an oldie to one is a newie to another or whatever I think you all know the kinda thing I mean.

Russ, I wasn't around when this was played first time round, so I don't know how much of a hammering this got in the 8Ts/9Ts but my nomination would be (opens gold envelope - drum roll) Sweet William - Maybe Baby.............thunderous round of applause and accepts the award for most overlooked oldie of all time....'I'd like to thank the organisers and everyone who voted for.....' - sorry, I went off on a tangent then whistling.gif Jo

not claiming to be a dj and also very rarely get out, but at soul or nothing last week i played bobby hebb you want to change me and quite a few people said 'haven't heard that for 20 years'. so whether it's really forgotten or just forgotten by those people, i'd nominate that excellent tune.

It's getting aired at the 100 Club on Saturday night - and I could be very angry when I play it whistling.gif Does that count :D Jo

Bunny Sigler - Girl don't make me wait

Posse - Evil

Ad libs - Nothing worse than being alone

Dave Love - Colalined baby

Promises-This love is real

And for those who remember Yate allnighters

Miroslav Vitous - New York City and Silvetti - Spring Rain

The Steelers - Walk On By this got the proverbial 'haven't heard that played out for years' when I span it at BIDDS.

Similarly at Soul or Nothing The Kittens - Gotta Be Love

and at Soulsville all dayer The Volumes - My Kinda Girl.

At Lifeline I played Jefferey Allen - Dilly Dilly only to be told it is currently covered up unsure.gif so must definately have been forgotten since it was played in the early '80's

It's nice to play at venues where you slip tracks like these in and they're appreciated.

Ady Croasdell's been hammering Eddie's My Name for the last couple of years at the 100 Club. I'd say very few of the records mentioned so far fit into the 'genuinely forgotten' category.

such a subjective thing, though. i've genuinely forgotten records i've got in my own boxes unsure.gif

if you go to the 100 club, it's hammered; if you don't and no-one else plays it it's forgotten.

i dare say pretty much everything gets played every year by someone somewhere.

Yeah but thats proberly not 'genuinely forgotten' by some of us on here, but to the dancers/masses is another thing...................

talking of eddie holman does i surrender get played anywhere now. cos that is a class tune

Not as much as it used to Dan it's currently in my play box along with Eddies My Name funnily enough but I haven't played either one for ages. I did see a copy change hands at BIDDS last week can't remeber the price tho. I may give EMN a spin now if Ady is pushing it.

Can't recall it being hammered there, like I say last month was first time I recall it being played

Rather like this too, have played it out a couple of times/ put it on tapes for people and it does seem to be one they'd either forgotten about or didn't know.

Agree with the Frankie Valli track, i know it's probably still a bit light weight for the purists but it is so much better than "You're Ready Now" which people loved aons back . Strangely there seems to be a lot of copy's keep coming up on Ebay US, almost as if someone is pushing it.

Another one in a similar vane that i like is "A Girl Like You - The Young Rascals"

As this is my favourite subject Here are a few more from me (some i have mentioned in other threads)

Fenways - Satisfied * Johnny Jay & the Gangbusters - You Get Your Kicks * Lavern Baker - One Monkey * Vibrations - Canadian Sunset ( almost the vocal to Hungry for Love) * Bob Brady & the Con-chords - Illusion / I Love You Baby * Betty Everett - I Can't Hear You * O'Jays - Whip It On ME Baby ( now this really does need re-activating, brilliant ) * Kenny Smith - My Day Is Coming * Kevin 'king' Lear - (you got) The Power Of Love * Prince Harold - Baby You've Got Me * Mitch Ryder - Come See About Me * Jackie Beavers - Slingshot ( stormer)

Another one i used to love was JERRY BUTLER'S version of ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE, it was popular at the oldies allnighters towards the end of the casino. Used to sound great when everyone clapped along with the build up to the chorus. AHH ! what memories !! :shades:

:shades:

Finding this a really interesting topic, as someone said it depends where you go etc, but fascinating to see quite a few tracks I've never heard of and quite a few I thought were pretty well known/played. Just wish I could join in but not being old enough to have heard them first time round... :shades:
