not claiming to be a dj and also very rarely get out, but at soul or nothing last week i played bobby hebb you want to change me and quite a few people said 'haven't heard that for 20 years'. so whether it's really forgotten or just forgotten by those people, i'd nominate that excellent tune.

Good choice Dan..That made a few peoples night :shades: ..

A few underplayed oldies i play are

If i were a carpenter...........Four Tops..

Lead me on.... Gwen Mcrae

Someday Tempest

One step at a time Maxine Brown

One night affair Jerry Butler

Who knows Marion Black

As long as you need me Four Tops...

So says my heart Latimore Brown

Don't lose that dream Aretha

All over but the shouting Ann Sexton

All great quality oldies that stand the test of time...IMO :shades:

Sounds I'd lurve to hear out again....

They call me Jesse James (+ the flip Charge) - Jesse James & the Dreams Band

Do the 45 - Sharpees

You're not lovin a beginner - Jesse Fisher

Uhuru - Jomo (never heard this anywhere!)

It's also been a zillion year since I heard Mary Love's Turned my bitter into sweet.... but it's such a classic I'm sure someone is still hammering it.

Colin (penchant for Wheel sounds) Day!

"So go on Soul Sources lets hear your personal selections for a reactivation of a forgotten oldie"

Hello Russ,

My personal favourite ... don't think I have heard it played more than once in the last ten years, but I could be very wrong! If fact Big Scotty may have only played it because I asked! General Assembly - Sensitive Mind, bit more on the psychadelic side than soul IMO but still gets my little fat legs moving! Might be a bit too fast for some of you old folk (tee hee)

The Steelers - Walk On By this got the proverbial 'haven't heard that played out for years' when I span it at BIDDS.

Similarly at Soul or Nothing The Kittens - Gotta Be Love

and at Soulsville all dayer The Volumes - My Kinda Girl.

At Lifeline I played Jefferey Allen - Dilly Dilly only to be told it is currently covered up :shades: so must definately have been forgotten since it was played in the early '80's

It's nice to play at venues where you slip tracks like these in and they're appreciated.

Ged

Jeffrey Allen covered up as hal miller "on top of the world" I think, played around mid-nineties as this at albrighton,is it the one on mala ged?

Thats the one. I first heard it at (ironically) TOTW and bought mine around that time. I guess about '82 only ever seen one other. Perhaps thats why its forgotten.

Another one i used to love was JERRY BUTLER'S version of ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE, it was popular at the oldies allnighters towards the end of the casino. Used to sound great when everyone clapped along with the build up to the chorus. AHH ! what memories !! :wicked:

Now you're talking !!! Absolutely superb, think I've got it on a Oldies anniversary tape (& vinyl of course) &yes the clapping on this is great, memories indeed :wicked:

Keep meaning to play it out, never get round to it, blast  no doubt a few of these will now get played everywhere & we'll all (well some of us) will get tired of 'em after 1000 plays whistling.gif

Spooky Ms Wallace!!!!!!!!!!!! Just saw some pics of Bish in my old albums, he'd enjoy our upcoming Reading Top Rank revival night on March 17th.

Records like the Ambers might be enough to tempt me back to the 100 club!!!

Some DJ's have a great knack for reactivating those barely remembered choons from years gone by...........whether they have been rested, rare & never turned up, never booted, only played a hand ful of times or whatever, I have great admiration for the DJ that digs these up & plays them out & they receive a whole new lease of life, some of them are almost like newies to a lot of the scene for one reason or another.

So go on Soul Sources lets hear your personal selections for a reactivation of a forgotten oldie.........forgotten being the key element here, please none of the top 500 & lets not get into the debate about whats an oldie to one is a newie to another or whatever I think you all know the kinda thing I mean.

Russ

Great thread Russ.............Here's some selections from the Wigan Panel

Tony Owens This Heart Cant Take No More

Kenny Ballard I'm Losin You

Madeline Wilson Dial L for Lonely

Willie Hatcher Head Over Heels

Rosetta Johnson That Hurts

Ted Ford Your Gonna Need Me

Johnny Maestro Heartburn

Eddie Parker You'll Never Make the Grade

C L Blast What Can I Do

Billy Keene Wishing and Hopeing

Ruby Johnson Weakspot

Al Wilson Now I Know What Love Is

and my favourite, 'never off the deck, pure soul, what 'Northern' means to me, gonna get the works at Bury in March' tune ..............Little Charles ............Talkin About You, Babe

Keep em comin'
