Over the years had many a good night there & heard some great DJ's Sam. Mark Bicknell, Steve Mannion, Joe Dutton & Mak off this site, the many spots from the Pinches twins, my Modernism co-promoter Errol Green, Terry Wright, Russ & Gaz Steele, Angus last night & of course the promoters Ian Johnson & Mark Whitley. Really enjoyed my spot there as well. Thanks guys. Now the rant starts Where the fcuk were all the local Barnsley faces? Last night there were only about half a dozen folks in from Barnsley. Why on earth didn't you support this night? Don't know why i asked this as i know the answer, it's because you are all stuck in the past with your classic oldies attitudes, ie, you know what you like & you like what you know & won't accept anything you don't know. Think i'm wrong? Just ask other folks in the area what we all call you? DINOSAURS thats what. Well i hope you are all proud of yourselves now as the folks who wanted to hear something outside the top 500 have lost our night Sorry about having the little rant on your thread Ian but im really pissed off about this. You & Mark deserve better mate. Good luck with the other nights you have got planned, hope they work out for you mate & you know you can count on my support. Thanks for the memories, Mart... pikeys dog
It's a shame that this night was under-valued by the locals, but it had plenty to contend with, with other nights springing up all over the shop, the re-launch of Soulsville, and a noticeable downward trend in attendances on Fridays. Good Luck to Geordie and Billytheboot on their future plans, hopefully they'll pan out better. Link to comment
Geordiejohnson
Thanks Martin & Joe for the comments thanks for your support Martin thanks for the passion for the venue, but you know my feelings im keeping out of the Bolloctics side of things as thats a lot of why people dont attend...However i will say this, there are alot of people in the scene who state that they want something different and the never show their faces ..... We didnt want chin strokers and good buddy back slappers, we wanted people who wanted something different, and we stuck by our guns and gave people just that. but to be fair to others who have contacted me personally, many who would need to travel said friday was restrictive time wise after getting back from work etc, but if we could have stayed open till at least 2am they could have made it.....well that wasnt possible. We were thinking of turning it in last year but hosts of people kept telling us to stick by our guns and we'll be there etc...guess what the same people never came. But Joes right too many venues are springing up on the same night and the re- start of soulsville on the same night give us the nod to halt...for now ah well were looking to the future and we'll keep you informed Thanks again to all Geeooooordie Edited February 25, 2006 by geordiejohnson Link to comment

We were forced into a date change when we got the new venue, and if we've contributed to the end of the friendship, I can only apologise. You're all welcome anytime you fancy a trip up to Leeds. Geordiejohnson
Hi Jamie, Dont worry, as i pointed out earlier we were going to stop last year and re think our stratagy....music like what we play needs a certain crowd and to get them together needs a specialist night...saturdays are good but we couldnt get that, so a change in tact is required.. you actually did us a favour by giving us a kick up the jacksey to stop..as yourself ritchie and co are people we would love to have down here..but to do that we had to rethink. On another side after getting made redundant and starting up my own business its sucked all my time i couldnt give the commitment required as i havent been able to get out to market the event properly and mark unfortunatly has projects going on for himself so we were both getting overstretched, but a quarterly event will be tickety boo for time marketing and gathering the masses. You never know you might even see me pulling some shapes on the floor at Soulsville next month Cheers Ian Link to comment
Guest
I'm really sorry to here that The Friendship didnt work out. I used to live in Barnsley & I know what the people are like down there, just want to go to the same places & here the same music, which I personally find very boring. Hope all works out with your new job, being made redundant is awful, its happened to my hubby a few times now. There seems to be a shortage of plumbers though, so you should have the jobs flooding in. Like Jamie said you are very welcome in Leeds, stay off The red Stripe though I was ill all day yesterday! Kirsty After a long abscence from the site perhaps I should make time to put pen to paper ( finger to keyboard actually) - seen people out and about who wondered about my abscence so to put the record straight a number of factors have kept me from posting mainly the fact that I cant get near the PC for Billy Jnr who constantly hogs it, but also like Ian I am involved with other projects and business ventures to try and alleviate the inevitable carreer change thats looking imminent. The last record played on Fridays final session was High Keys - 'Lets Take a Chance' which sort of summed up what we were about at the Friendship, I am not trying to say we were any differant to lots of you out there but in Barnsley it was one hell of a chance to try something differant, unfortunately not enogh local support was available for the kind of tunes we tried to promote and you can only go on for so long with poor attendances, sure as Ian mentioned loads of people have said 'stick with it, it will happen' but three years down the line is a long time to 'stick with it' and most of those comments came from people who never showed up. We had some good nights and met some great 'like minded' people and I would like to thank all the stalwarts for standing by us.Just sorry we couldnt provide the numbers to lift the atmosphere. Odd though that some of the things we were playing 2-3 years ago are now accepted in our area at the more commercial venues! - As Ian mentioned maybee a quarterly event will come in the not too distant future(unless weve sold up by then!) so well keep people posted, Also on a plus side weve just freed up our Friday night so a visit to see Jamie, Rich and co looks like a definate, Once again many thanks to those who stuck with us - 'To the Bitter End' and will see lots of you out and about, meantime if anyone wants to buy..............................
