Wigan Annivesary Niter Manchester

just a look back

This one seemed funny, found meself getting kit together to go to a wigan annivesary, just whats going on here eh? to be honest usually leave these events well alone, but this one did seem to promise something a bit different than the usual run of mill over promoted "oldies" events

Have to say that the build up to this was amusing.

Another Wigan celebration was occuring in Blackburn, this one was claiming to be "the offical 31st annivesary celebration". Which led to the usual amusing going ons you seem to get whenever krl are involved in anything.

Anyway back to nite, got to Ducie Bridge around 7 with Richie Ann and Larry , Stevei Cato added a element of suprise to event as he moved it upstairs. Usually make best effort to catch warm up as a good way to start nite, few pints, great music, good crowd.

Think walked into tail end of Lisa Hurley set, which was finishing on a high, caught Birth Of A Playboy, arggh details of ones in between her finishing with September Jones -Home are gone but do remember quality being a key word. Usual suspects there, Brett, Steve and associates along with fair few who at times can be found on here, Jamie, Mark, Garethx, Lisa, Danny, John May, Wendy and more than likely a few more missed . Along with crowds John May all way from Derby up next, and pushed out a great hour, place filling up now, think was over 100 in at peak, and was a good buzz. Eddie Wainwright on next, can't remember where Eddie from but continued the vibe. Danny D from Dublin was up next adding a bit of a Wigan Annivesary feel to the nite with his set as threw in a few wigan tasters

Place packed, a good laugh and all that, gotta say place is more than a warm up, part of the whole nite really. Hopefully get a few playlists/tens from djs posted up

Cross the road to ncs round 10 , already place was busy, film showing of "Function At Junction" and a preview of new dvd was showing downstairs, would have a full detailed view of all the going ons in this showing, but missed it :D Anyone fill in details? Flirtations on in main hall and did the business, looked good, moved good and sounded good. Downstairs opened as the Mr M's Room and that was how it cracked on till 8am.

Sounds wise - as flyers had it, full line up of ex-wigan djs, was told Gary Rushbrook didnt show, not sure of reason. Now to be honest was expecting someting different from usual oldies format, but can't get my head reallly round this oldies thing, in the main hall my own tastes would be to have a varied blast of wigan sounds, covering the whole wide range of sounds played from day 1 to end. Sure place for the classics and well known, but could have done with a bit of a deeper dig at some of the sounds that passed thru, fair wide range to choose from both styles and history wise, lesser known, ones that got better known later, infamous ones, suprising ones, horror ones, forgotten ones, different eras and so on. A spot starting from begining of wigan taking us thru all periods to end wold have been good.

Just own view based on own tastes, and what heard thru nite, of course other factors like what majority of crowd wanted , keeping floor busy, requests and so on come into play and must have a effect on what djs delivered. As the crowd seemed happy going by floor and reaction, so maybe its just the normal "oldies" way and what majority wanted and got. Not my cup of tea though, does make me wonder about what whole "oldies " thing is about, but save wondering for other time.

8am sunrise over Manchester, think at 14 hour stage since setting off, which is a long day, thanks to Ritche for brew afterwards, Brian for lift back home and that was that, Wigans 31st annivesary over

A busy nite, enjoyable, good laugh , catch ups, sociable nite, as always all seemed to run and work well, the djs delivered what the crowd wanted and gave them a wigan oldies niter. Vinyl wise, fair amount sellers, few bargains to be had

Next NCSC niter at Manchester is the First Anniversary in Nov with a shockingly strong dj line up inc the return of the Northern Cowboys

Main topic of conversation on the way home was what wigan memories / classics didn't get played, this wasn't a negative conversation but one to pass the journey back to Derby.

General Assembly - Sensitive mind

Traditions - my life with you

Short people - why do you put it to me baby

Gil Blanding - Rules

Roy Dawson - over the top

Kelly St.claire - hear that beat

Nightwatch - lips to your heart

Skullsnaps - i'm your pimp

Yvonne Vernee - Just like you did me

Pete warner - i just want to spend my life with you

Anyway theres 10............ Well done though to all the Jocks, and promoters.

Come on let's have some more !

A quick reply from the KRL camp which Mike the administrator dubs 'amusing' whenever a Wigan Anniversary is on.

KRL started the revival anniveraries in 88 and still continue to do so.

Considering both Kev and Richard are two of the original DJ's there and are unbookable by rival promoters, they have every right to embrace and be proud of their huge following.

1,400 in at Blackburn last night and totally SOLD OUT.

A real authentic playlist too from Sandra Philips to Flame n King to John Leach ..even Brainstorm's 'Lovin Is Really My Game'

KRL indeed have critics from a small selection of 'sceners', but still are well respected by the majority of the scene for their commitment and passion for DOING IT WELL.

Well credit to the Northern Soul scene i say if there were 1,400 in Blackburn and not sure of the door count at the CIS New Century event but it was packed proving that the scene can host two major gigs in the North West on the same night and they both do well.

As i've said the Wigan thing ain't really my bag as i like to try and move forward and would like the current scene to be promoted as just that current.

Still there is more to all this than meets the eye really and to be honest i think people are a little fed up with all the in - fighting, politics and general split in this scene, if nothing else over 2,000 people at two gigs ain't bad on the same night, all the DJ's at the Manchester event were authentic to Wigan, and Richard and Kevin of course were as well as was stated in Bexters reply, whatever both promotions should take a huge pat on the back.

A slightly more synical overview of this now tried and tested Wigan revival deal is the fact that it attracts huge crowds and must be a very pleasing to the bank balance of the promoters, fair play and good luck to you but at the end of the day that's what this all boils down too, all the friction, people chucking dummies etc. the bottom line is financial gain you cant tell me otherwise sorry. oh promoters deserve financial reward for putting a lot on the line to start with i don't have a problem with that, i just wish this 'keep the faith' smokescreen was a little less used and just be honest that money matters.

Ego's play a huge part as well third class or otherwise, it's a music scene at the end of the day, the problems start when money is the be all and end all.

Oh and Mike can buy his own beer....lol

Bexter,

This staunch defending of all things KRL is pretty boring and probably counter productive, it smacks of New Labour spin doctoring rubbish.

IMHO (a humble punter) the KRL and togetherness events have some positives, but some also some negatives and really if you don't as an (employeee? on performance related pay?) address them they will eventually bite you on the bum.

Okay positives:

Stoke Kings Hall - venue (WOW) the nearest to the Casino? Maybe i suppose this is important on a revivalist vibe, and lovely floor. Also nice for those of us that new went to NS's very own Super club (due to a lack of age).

Blackburn KGH - similarly lovely floor.

Prestwich (am i right in the connection in the NS family tree) - again nice floor.

Negatives:

Appearance of highly corporate closed shop dj policy (Radio 1 playlist style).

Music policy that is, after a while a little not that exciting.

It maybe the case that KRL is catering for a specific niche, notably the revivalist crowd and those (like me) that have not heard oldies to death due limited time on the scene (unfortunately i was 8 on the final night of the casino).

But what happens when the revivalists get a wee bit too old to attend all nighters? (okay all-dayers in the guise of SAGA tea dance northern doos might be a good financial prospect?!). May be simply the rich seam of revivalist NS revenue will have been exhausted in 5-10 yrs time and the all the £ will have been made.

Where will this leave the scene? Smaller healthier and more vibrant? or DEAD?

Okay all scenes have their politics and i suppose the northern scene, being sooo long in the tooth (and trainspotty & elitest) has more politics than most - compare old skool house, tribal, soulful blah blah or new indie/old indie....

and maybe a good purge now and then is healthy (as long as it doesn't involve goolags)

but at the end of the day "corporate" and "underground" cultures do not mix very well. And I was under the impression that NS was the ultimate underground scene (LOL).

To paraphrase (IMHO a fantastic DJ) - it's a case of FLOWER POT B#STARDS vs RARE SOUL ADDICTS.

cheers

ben

(will be at Stoke, introducing a few old mates to what is still despite all the navel gazing and infighting within the best scene with the best music you could ever desire).

PS. is "Keep the Faith" subject to copyright? not that i really care that much

Used the word "amusing going ons" cause all heard regarding this matter was and still is amusing to me, both krl using term "offical" and the reaction

Was always going to wind people up so some could ask ask why use it?

like it or not, whenever " krl" comes up, there is a good chance of some "amusing going ons" be it from krl or reaction of others

Maybe be worthwhile suggesting that have a look at what and why krl has this effect

Onto other matters

was waiting till after upgrade so might as well post here

we have many members who use their correct name, try to discuss and post info in a "normal" manner no matter who they are

any confusion on identity just causes hassle and suspicion, and also brings into question the validilty of info posted

Dunno where got initial idea how forum works or way to use it

whatever, hopefully can see that went about it wrong way

Hopefully realise all have to do to continue as a member here

is clear up any confusion of just who is actually posting now and in the future under the user name bexter by reply

(has to be one user - one account , if more accounts needed suggest join under real names)

any concerns pm/email myself or kolla

To Mike(moderator)- I will offer promotional news regarding Kev and the KRL camp (hopefully without going over the top-promise!). And you really should lighten up and say hello to Kev and Richard.

Soul Source in our opinion is getting better and more interesting.

Mark B. Sensible comments.

Ben. The type of response that KRL totally respects. A balanced, intelligent and well thought out overview.

Bexter,

I am sure your not trying to mislead others with your above posting, but if you would like to check with Kev he will confirm he was asked to DJ at the event at the NCS Wigan Allnighter but sadly he was already booked at KGH.

If you would like to post your email address I can send you the emails to confrim this or I could post up here if it helps

Politics aside....

It's Monday morning, sat in the office and don't know where I ache the most(SAGA tea dances might not be a good idea after all..LOL)

I had a great night at the CIS, got into the Ducie just after 9 to see Eddies spot, then crossed over to the CIS about 9.45 and it was already quite busy, throughout the evening I kept wandering between the two rooms, saw plenty of friendly/familiar faces.

There seemed to be plenty of people from all over the country, spoke to guys from Edinburgh, Dublin, Leicester, Cambridge, Southsea and London.

Managed to last until 6 Oclock, the mind was willing but the body kept saying "I've had enough please stop.."

Thanks to Mr Waterman etal for a great night.

See you all in October

Peter.

Hi all and especially Mike (mod), I have posted a review of the Twisted Wheel revival night and the Hideaway in Manchester (where I was deejaying along Roger Banks) on soultalk and thought you migt be interested in the part that covers the NCS Allnighter...

.....at 2 am it was time to say goodbye to all. What a great place the Hideaway is. The music is so well choosen and the people are some of the nicest on the Scene...if you still haven` t found your way to the Hideaway yous hould do the next months.

Me, I still had not enough and as I was given a free entrance ticket at the Hideaway for the New Century Soul Allnighter (I told you that the people there are the nicest around!) of copurse my next stop ahd to be at the Manchester City Hall. Especially as I had a date there with John Pugh (well, of course for some record bizz )

The hall is unbelievable.....big, bigger, City Hall. It was a Wigan Revivalk night and that was what the approx. 600 people in were dancing to...Wigan stompamania all the way thru...not so much my cup of tea, so after one diet Coke (yes, by now I had to stop it a bit) I decided to go outside the hall where all the record dealers were to be on the look out for some familiar faces. I met again Steve Z who introduced me to his old mate John Mills (nice guy!). Finally I met John Pugh and the rest of the morning was done with...well, reocrd and scene talk of course. Joinig were Dave Rimmer, Blue Max and Mike Hughes...very nice meeting up with you guys

Shortly before I decided to try to find my way back to the hotel I found out that the record table I was leaning on belonged to the Kidson family ....especially nice again to have met you

All in all a great weekend of Soul, why can` t life be always like that ?

Marc (still happy about his 500 UKP plus 45 he found during that weekend for a mere 30 UKP hidden in one box)
