Northern Soul Documentary

Hi there, I just signed up but I've been reading the site for a while. Just thought you lot might be interested in watching a documentary I was involved in making with a few other people.

It was made for the final part of my university course (Media Production) and the idea to do a documentary on Northern Soul came from my interest in the music and the scene, which in turn is courteousy of my Dad (Tony Crookes) who DJs in the Morecambe and Lancaster area and has been a fan for years. The plan was to look at how the scene will carry on in the future with a new generation of Soul fans, and also a bit of history to explain it a bit for people not so in the know.

To watch it online go to

We managed to get Russ Winstanley, Paul Sadot, and Ruth, Marysia and Norman Welch to contribute with interviews, and the archive footage we used was pretty much the standard stuff to be honest.

I hope you enjoy it, let me know your thoughts in here. Cheers.

Yeah some of it was filmed there, I wasn't at that shoot but the other lads in the group were.

We've got some dancefloor action from Soul or Nothing on it, and some of Paul Djing.

Thanks for putting that up. I enjoyed it. My only criticism is that you wasted two minutes focusing on Wigan, which has been done countless times before. Much more interesting to see the recent footage and hear the young girl describe why she loves the music.

yeah the wigan thing...well that was kind of forced upon the story by the footage we managed to get, interview content, places and people we could find, and also our tutor's suggestions for what to include (He's marking it after all). Of course we all know its not all Wigan, theres everywhere else, but for the purpose of this short and hopefully informative documentary we had to put that in.

Thanks for watching it though, and for the comments.

Really struggling to watch this as it keeps stopping and stuttering every few seconds. My PC is powerful and on broadband so doesn't normally have problems with video. Would love to watch it, but the gremlins won't let me. I'll try later in the day.

Top marks Joel for putting this together and letting us know about it :( . Let us know what you scored in your assessment?

Could you not load this onto the soul-source website as it may have

better bandwidth than the server you currently use...

I'm sure someone will let you know if loading a 10min clip is possible.

Youtube.com has low bandwith unless you sign up for priority service. Best thing to do is to open the link in a new browser window and let it load for ten minutes while you do something else. When the full clip has loaded just restart the player and you can watch without pause.

i do have it on my webspace but i run 4 sites off that with 5gb of transfer a month so thats gone down. i'll upload it to something like dropsend.com so you can all download the wmv video file and watch it when you fancy.

Played perfect on mine, golly good effort young man. One tiny thing though , I did'nt like how Paul discribed newly found 60's/70's soul as ''Progressive Northern''

Agree with you .... it's really quite good ..... don't understand your bit about Paul though .... but then again i'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer at the best of times ... :(

if you want to get your own copy i've uploaded it here

https://rapidshare.de/files/16149509/keepingthefaith.wmv.html

if you go there then choose free download, wait the length of time it says, type the code it gives in the box and click download. sounds a faff but it explains it as you go.

the youtube one seems to work ok still for me though, so i guess if you open that then leave it loading then it should run smoothly.

oh and am i in trouble with gavin page for something?

I enjoyed it and it played fine here. I rather liked Paul and Russ talking about the two different types of Northern which are about on the scene IMO just now. There is deffo a retro scene and a more progressive type scene :(

Same here video keeps stopping for some reason? It did the same with Jackie Wilson & Lonely teardrops? Anyone know the reason for that, or has a fix. :( Cheers.

Brilliant little documentary !! really well done.

Just a little bit of constructive criticism as this is something you are choosing as a career. The only bit i wasen't sure about was the on the couch interview of the Man & Woman, just a little bit "Creature Comforts" i had visions of a couple of Badgers or something saying it ! Best to interview singularly i think. But that is just a little nit pick & the rest was great, really good editing.

You want to show it to the S.W.O.N.S makers, show them how to do it & still keep the viewer awake :(

P.s.

To all the soulies having trouble viewing it GET BROADBAND YOU CHEEPSKATES !!! :(

Something in that footage has led me to put up another thread !

I showed S.W.O.N.S. to my tutor and he laughed and said it was one of the worst things he's ever seen.

I was a bit disappointed after we'd finished it when I saw the archive footage used on Soul Function because it was pretty similar but perfect quality.

Good stuff. I teach media studies and we blew our budget on a load of video cameras and editing software at the start of the year. Always wondered about doing something like this, or maybe even a piece of drama. Takes a bit of thought and planning though to get right, and then there's the critics of course :( One day maybe...

Yes I agree to ,but Progressive makes me think of Led Zepplin or Frank Zappa. Could you imagine Led Zep doing a dance routine on stage like The Temps or The Dells or Frank Zappa singing ''I never knew''

Enjoyed it. In 10 minutes it said a lot and showed a lot. I thought it was interesting that the sound track was mainly instrumental. I suppose this was technical choice. It's difficult to interview people over a vocal. But it did prove once and for all that instrumentals can be soul - well Northern Soul at least.

I thought it was crackin' piece. Well done mate. Flowed well, "real people" enjoying "real things". Thought Russ came over quite well too. All round a great effort in my book. Enjoyed the10 mins. I look forawrd to seeing you give a cheesy "keep the faith" salute at the Oscars sometime! Good luck with other projects.

Dave

thanks again to everyone for watching it and for all the great feedback.

billy freemantle - we used instrumentals for exactly that reason, the interviews. i hate it when they use vocal tracks on tv under interviews because the voices clash too much.

matt male - doing a drama piece on northern soul would be pretty interesting, i would have loved to have seen "one upon a time in wigan" just to see how that was put together, and "function at the junction" was a good story. i hope you manage to get something worked out with your students someday like that.
