Used To Be Cool, Now Crap

There's loads! And there's been a few threads about this very subject already.

I posted 'Gameplayers' in the 'record of the day' thread about a week ago, didn't like it then, but thought it sounded pretty good when I'd found an old copy and played it at home the day before. Weird huh?!

I think drugs have a lot to answer for with regards to answers to your original question though!

Paul:

We'll never win the war on drugs.... we'd be too out of it to aim properly.....

Ral Donner has always been shit and will always be shit.

He is still doing the rounds as an Elvis tribute act.

Peter

No he's not, he's been dead for 25 years! he was never an Elvis tribute, he was an Elvis copyist and he had him off to a tee, having a few hits in his own right.

He always was an Elvis impersonator (Copyist - sorry Pete S!) Peter!

Social Tragedy by Daughters of Eve on Cadet is sooooooo much better than 'dont let it slip away'! (same tune, different words- and the original version, Ral Donner came later) - but it's still not great.....

I stand humbled and corrected Smiffy - well in so far as he is no longer with us. However, there are lots of references to Ral being an Elvis tribute act so I shall stand by that bit. Notwithstanding the fact that I really don't know the difference between a "copyist" and a tribute act - methinks your splitting hairs!

He sounded similar to Elvis, that was his gimmick.

I've actually got this record on Parlophone (I think)

Black Power - James Coit.

The Burning fooking Bush.

Both great records.

Which proves the point that threads like this will always be one man's crap is another man's nostalgic oldie, so we'll never all agree on any.

Except Interplay. Will anyone defend that?

Matt. You are not allowed to utter the words "Interplay" in public without invoking the ghosts of the distant days.

I would have had said The Burning Bush... The first time i heard it, i thought what the hell is this crap? How did this get plays? Yes it does sounds like The Monkeys on some acid filled trip, but it really is an infectious 100mph tune. I actually quite like it the more i listen to it...

If you haven't heard Interplay for over 30 years, and it comes on, unexpectedly, loud, in a decent room, it brings back those teenage years and that makes it sound great!

Wasn't there a big thread on here about this very record some time back?

Sorry, Black Power used to be cool, then was cr*p……but has gone full circle, so is now cool again! :D (We need another thread!) It’s already being played again at some venues and it’s spreading! - Retro!

All the best,

Len

P.s - I like it anyway

There was tons at later Wigan in my day (I'll temper that with, there was tons of brilliant stuff too.)

Lost Summer Love is a cringer IMO, but I can't tell you how big it was, absolutely massive.

Russ Winstanley was guilty of selling his soul & should bare the brunt for all this crap stuff, no other djs were doing this at the time, to my memory & once he was off the decks things usually improved. Although, you had no chance at an early session on a Friday, cos he was on all night, that was torture, but at least the bar was open!!.

He was always plugging any old crap with a view to getting it pressed up by his supplier Simon S & they could make some wonga.

Aid.

Used to adore Burning Bush and Black Power back when - 35 years have not been kind to them though IMHO...

Back in 78 I bought the track below (on the very same Blue Bell) 'cos I thought it was the best Norvern track ever - cost me nearly a weeks wage at the time but I didn't care 'cos I HAD to have it....

It sounds fooking awful now!!.

Love it! — As in your post, not the record! I can just imagine an excited 70's teenager, ‘throwing’ himself around to this…..but yes, it’s cr*p I’m afraid :thumbup:

All the best,

Jimmy Delphs - Don't Sign The Paper Baby

one of the first northern records I bought (even though now I wouldn't really consider it "northern" per se, you can dice that up however you'd like), but unfortunately my mate who I do my monthly nighter with loves the bleedin' tune, and demands I play it every time we spin together. It really does make me cringe for some reason these days though. I'm thinking of perhaps just giving it to him once and for all...

Yes... Joey Delorenzo

spot on... absolutely dreadful record..

That said I like most stuff, and although its fun to mock all these I think 'Our Music' is utterly fabulous...I think its worth saying that here..

That said, there are some tracks that just turn me off, either they are generally deficient in vocal quality otherwise termed as pub singers, or just too plaintive for my taste, Tommy Bush - I don't like it is an example, nothing in that record moves me what so ever.. and I'd have to say that about most of the above...

Why don't we do a thread about really good records, give me an excuse to knock trendy funky stuff, cue 'Funk Meister' Dave Abbott... and thrust the virtues of 'Beat ballads..

maybe another time ehh..
