Just followed the link and read the following, is it true (the bit about last record played)?

Dave Evison owns 15,000 records at his home near Stoke-on-Trent.

They're worth hundreds of thousands of pounds, but to Dave, they're priceless.

He's been a northern soul DJ since the 1960s, and has played at famous clubs like the legendary Wigan Casino, where he enjoyed his greatest claim to fame.

"The honour was bestowed upon me to play the last ever record at Wigan Casino.

"It was called 'I'm On My Way' by Dean Parrish. I said I'd never play it again and I didn't.

"That is probably my most famous moment ever on the northern soul scene."

Nah, he played it at Tunstall Catholic Club a few weeks back - mind you, it was a Wigan Casino night so is this acceptable as a tiny fib!!!!!!

Unless some-one know otherwise????

He managed to play the 3 before 8 in the wrong order as well...but he is getting on nowadays.......

Just watched the program, and must say was totally disapointed, not with the event, but the choice of opening track (Dobie Gray) and general demeanour and content, good god once again a BBC venture cannot wait to show the scene as a total "Revivalist" movement, i first went in 81, i've maintained a presence every year, even at times when it was almost (believe me) impossible to attend any event, i grew up listening and loving Rare Soul music, i was never a Wigan child, so was never affected by all the( deserved) adulation that event had.

But i never saw myself or my friends as part of a "Nostaglia" trip, isn't that what teddy boys were about? I feel the thread of the reporter dwelt on my aforementioned concerns, though to be fair the people interviewed didn't bring that "feeling" through with their comments.

Did happen to hear behind talk over, Joe Tex " I Wanna Be Free", so thank god for that.

Did like the line

Reporter; " I don't make a habit of dancing with men "

Merv replied as quick as a flash; "neither do I"

(was the reporter trying to say something)

I enjoyed it as a piece of easy watching. They are on a hiding to nothing really. Just look on here. We cant even agree amongst ourselves about most things :)

As for the Dave Evison quote about the last track at Wigan. He plays other copies of I'm on my way, but keeps the actual piece of vinyl he used that night in his collection. At least, that is how I understood it.

programme on channel 4 last night called Northern Soul. Didn't bother to check details but settled down all ready to pick holes in it ;-) & it turns out to be a half hour short about a young man who wangles his way into a wrestling bout even though he had zilch wrestling experience. Ho hum

Didn't see the programme, but I did like Dave Evison's comment on the website - "If you're prepared to come on to the scene and say 'hey, I'm not here to take the mick, I'm here to enjoy the music' you'll be welcomed with open arms." So true - saw some 'tourists' danced off the floor and scared off at the weekend cos they were taking the p*ss and getting in people's way on the dancefloor (even after a quiet word from a couple of people).

Thing that made me laugh in the article - describing the last guy as a "self-confessed mod" as if it was a terrible thing to admit to!! wink.gif
