just wanted to know if anybody remembers the howard at whittle le woods in lancashire,a fantastic club imo,and sadly missed

link

And run by Richard Searling. A musical masterpiece of a night.

I can tell you the worst club ever....TROGGS,All Nighter, Bolton 1973. Nearly everyone got 'rolled'!

what does 'rolled' mean?

link

To Dave R; I have to say 'GOOD'. I had my previous weeks purchases(last night at the Torch nicked. If it hadn't been for Bob Hinsley caring about us 'out of towners', I might have left the scene for good.

Dave's reply 'WISHFUL THINKING'

To Wendy; 'Rolled' was a depressive word used to describe being 'Robbed face to face'

What about the Howard mallett in Cambridge? Fantastic soul club, great people (where are you now Penut & Karen and Mick warwick???) Vastly underated

link

Fantastic club. They put a night on there about two years ago.Dont think it went that well as the place has changed so much.I had forgotten how hard that dance floor was!

Karen and Peanuts are doing fine but are off the scene now, Micks good and wouldn't surprise me if he don't turn up at the St.Ives reunion next week :-))

If you see Mick tell him Neil from Letchworth says hello and where the hell have you been! Tell him I'd love to see him down at the Plinston where many if not all the old faces still gather. Peanuts & Karen are sadly missed, as is the Mallett!

Yes the Mallett is sadly missed by many I suspect. Many of us ex EASC began our soul lives there. I have a lot of respect for Tony Dellarand how he and the other DJ's made it possible for us to hear such fantastic music.

I remember going to the mallett almost every friday, then St.ives, the wirrina, loughborough or even Norwich all nighters on the saturday.Probably kettering or somewhere on the sunday for a dayer.Wish I could do all that now, but it would probably kill me !

The Dynamic 3 Soul Club at Claremont Hotel in Edinburgh - ran until the mid 90s. Absolutely dynamite - great DJs in the shape of Keith Money, Alan MacKenzie, Lenny Harkins, Ronnie Heeney and Mark Wilson and superb guests from down south. Upfront, passionate music with an accent on quality tunes. It was my introduction to the rare soul scene as a 21 year old in 1995. The best!

What a great thread. I visited St Ives only the once as it closed not long after. Couldn't find anywhere selling pasties in the morning tho

For a soulie growing up in Gloucestershire, The all dayers at the Subscription rooms in Stroud, Wheelrights and the Roundabout were must go to places. Sometimes we were lucky enough to hear the sounds before they got 'broke' at Yate. remember the first time I saw Ion dance, clear as a bell, one Friday night on the sunken dancefloor at the roundabout. Memories like that will never leave you wink.gif

Also, a little later, soul nights were run at the Swindon Town football club, by a lad called Scouse, (whatever happened to him?). I'm sure it was the only time that ramshackle stadium saw a crowd.

George Clooney--I wish pet.

Rolled was a 70's term for 'heavy dudes' confronting you, then nicking your wares and generally staying in the same 'niter' with that 'what you gonna do about it' grin on their faces.

We don't see it much these days due to promoters like me spending fortunes on SECURITY. Sadly in the 70's we all just too young and oblivious to the dubious methods of 'organising events', whereby the usual question of 'security' was met with... 'WHAT SECURITY'! We don't need 'em, Northern Soulers are lovely people.

UNTIL YOU GOT ROLLED BY ONE!

thanks for clearing that up for me. do you think status quo were in on that with their Rolled Gold greatest hits lp? hahaha. nah - seriously - that's horrible! were these err, roller boys soul fans too or did they just get off on being smug about their crimes? surprised it didnt come to blows.......

My good friend Scouse (Chris French) is very much alive and well, living in Swindon and attending the occasional do (there is a picture of him @ 100 Club a few months ago somewhere on this site). I would very much expect him to be @ Stoke this Saturday, most likely to be found to the right of the stage with the rest of the West Country Massive. Scouse can also be found on the old Stafford TV footage sporting an unruly moustache, ridiculous 80s hairdo, a variety of hideous tattoos, all whilst dancing in a rather gay looking pair of very tight shorts!

When you next see Scouse tell him Jenny (of Jenny & Nina fame) says Hi as we were only talking about him the other day!

On the subject of St Ives went to a recent reunion and had to chuckle at our friend, who shall remain nameless, going on about how he went every week, never missed one and all those memories etc etc. He then stated that he remembered most the huge tree and massive roundabout at the entrance to the venue...how we laughed as we pulled up and there was this twig stuck in the middle of a roundish hump in the middle of the road! Through the laughter we heard him mumble that 'f**k me the drugs must have been better than I remember back in those days' - cue manic laughing from everyone.

Neil, I was watching your youthful frame, chewing gum and trying to dance, only the other day - the Leicester 2nd Anniversary video. Sean Chapman's good lady, Michelle, having only started on the scene since meeting Sean a couple of years ago, was amazed at the youthful bodies gracing the dancefloor instead of the now common array of middle-aged baldies propping up the bar!!

OOOOOH THAT HURTS!!! That's why they used to call me, amongst other things, The Colonel, in those days due to sweat band under arm! Ah, those were the days and I would like to add that I'd done my leg in and hence why I was dancing like Mischief does today!!!!! Sadly many of those on that film are no longer with us but it is nice to dig it out and see Adam with hair!!!!

Can I just say I am on there too. With the same blinkin tank top

If you watch it again the video finishes with 5 lads walking out in the morning, (me carrying theRufus Lumleylp just bought off Dean Anderson), and it shows us walking off into the sunrse and ends with the thank you credits. I also did the best spin of my life and it is captured on there too. Well I went around twice and didnt end up on my arse, which was a lot bonier back then.

I'd be interested to know which one you are Neil. After receiving loads of emails about plinston to put on in town. Now I am living in South Wales instead of down the road, I will probably get to go once in a while wink.gif

For Mikey, I saw scouse about 3 weeks ago at Weston Super Mare, he's had a life I can tell you. I remember the roundabout well, got mullered there with Steve Smith and Geordie Martin. I used to love Chesham soul nights (we called them soul fights, due to the regular scooterist violence) that (I think) MArk White used ta put on, it became the backdrop for Bucks lads apprenticing for the scene after his earlier venture in High Wycombe had folded. I remeber being somewhat refreshed and going up to mark Bicknall to request something and him just putting Freddie Houston "if I had known" on saying "watch what you're doing I paid £150 quid for this".... Ah well those were the days...

Obviously the good looking one - DOH! That's me and the crew at the front of the stage on the right, Grey Spencers Bowies, Addias black vest and BAD headband! If you look real close you can see me purchasing the Brooks Brothers in the background and thinking is £90 worth it or not. How times change, lol. They also cut me, Nina and Jon Downings shuffling to 'There Was A Time' just as we go into our 'Come Dancing' routine - GUTTER!!!! That really was a great night and anther club sadly missed. Oh, by the way I'd left my then wife in a hospital bed with a punctured lung to attend so don't ever say I don't love me Soul (we are now divorced surprisingly!)

Did you hang out with a guy with long fair-ish hair, and wearing a tracksuit??

I'm busy trying to remember. There was a guy with a Kevin Keegan perm, another with one of the first flick haircuts I can remember wearing a really loud jumper (a la big country style). They were all near the stage. And a good looking girl in long skirt that the camera focussed on lots. If I was the camera man, thats who i would have been filming too

The guy with the tracksuit and spinning with the doddgy hair is Grahams brother and another whose left the scene I belivie. Graham has a photo collection, and his brother if memory serves right, to die for with 100s of the Casino and all the other venues as well.

The girl I remember as I was trying to pull her for a friend. Sadly my stunning looks failed me :-( and she told me to go carry out a sexual act on myself :-O

We used to hang around with Graham and also the Scottish crew, Wullie et all, and all met up every weekend.

Where the hell did the time go? Where did all my friends go?

I bumped into Graham at the 2nd Togetherness weekender. It was the first time I had seen him in over ten years, then we met again at Stoke a year or so later. i guess he will be there again this weekend, but he did say he only ventured out rarely. Probably one of those instances where we know lotsof the same people, but never met.

I was innocently plucking some stray bit of meat out of my luxurios beard this morning in front of the mirror and made the mistake of looking up, three hours later i managed to break the trance but every time someone coughs in the office i lift my cassock and sing the birdie song backwards............strange .....

Look into to my beard look into my beard............

Great idea for a thread!

So many forgotten clubs...

How about The Bankhouse and The Coppertops, both Worcester. You'd hear almost all the top Wheel sounds and then some (as we used to say). The Chateau Impney was a legend at around the same time. Sunday afternoon "sessions" with "Farmer" Carl Deane spinning the likes of Baby Reconsider when it was a (gasp!) £40 record!

Does anyone else recall these venues? If so, you are very old!

Dayo, They are way before my time, but I do remember a club in Worcester, near the one way ring road?. It had 2 floors, they used to do mod nights in the downstairs bit, and Northern Soul upstairs. Guess that might be very late 70s, poss early 80s. Also after Wheelrights closed we started going to a place on the road to Worcester, from Tewksbury. it was in a kind of skittle alley type venue at the side of a pub, with lots of nice kitch photo's of dogs playing cards etc. What was the name of that place???

Thanks Buey mate! We did have some great nights at Townfield House and Elgiva Hall. Was chatting with Mark Bicknell recently about those do's and some of the tunes we were spinning back then. Do you also remember Tom Halvey's bashes over Aylesbury FC and other hidey holes? Bumped into Tom in January at one of Jon Buck's nights.

Too true Mick! The whole scenes gone mad as far as prices are concerned and the days of buying blind in bulk are long gone (much like the days of walking into Davids Bookshop after a local butchers off-loaded a huge box of UK demos etc etc - remember?) Now I'm 40 next week :o so hopfully the boys have been in touch for a surprise party mate - or knowing Taff more than likely they haven't whistling.gif

Can't help you with those venues, I was living abroad at the time -sorry!

There was a lot of activity around Worcester from around 1970 onwards, although Gloucester may have had a slightly bigger following.

Used to be a good record shop in Gloucester too. Was it called The Wax Machine? Run by Richard Someone-or-Other? It was around 1973. I bought a demo of Patti Austin "Are we ready" on CBS there for 50 pence. He reckoned it was crap! Still got it. On the downside, I did sell him a UK demo of the Prophets for a quid coz it had just been re-issued!!

Win some, lose some...

Pilgrims inn on the river home of a great occasional soul fight err night, had a great jukebox and a place where many of us heard what became NS for 1st time.

George & Dragon think was the 1st NS event i went to in Bedford bout 1972.

Kings Head or something similar in Hammersmith, Terry Davies (the Record Corner one) used to put on monthly soul dos in a cupboard sorry minute back room of the pub. Must have been about '74, my first regular nights, hearing Showmen-Our love for 1st time, pestered Terry every month after that to play it.

Too jam packed to dance, just bob about on the spot almost (nothing changes)

Ady, Randy,Ian Clark,Tony Rounce,Tony Ellis & many other "names" from the London Scene. Sweaty, beered up happy days, probably didn't actually run for very long but it was my introduction. 30 years ago, bloody hell !

Used to love The Saints soul club at St Helens rugby ground run by Mark Hughes, and an absolute corker of a night above a pub in Widnes town centre in the mid 80s usually attended by about a dozen people but I heard tunes there that were out of this world, can't for the life of me remember what it was called but I think Sully (Widnes top and only Mod and ladykiller) used to play there a bit, anyone?

Does anyone know if anything ever happens in St Helens these days? It's got more scooterboys and ex-mods than the rest of the country put together by the looks of it but never see any soul dos advertised anymore when I'm up there.
