Does anyone know if anything ever happens in St Helens these days? It's got more scooterboys and ex-mods than the rest of the country put together by the looks of it but never see any soul dos advertised anymore when I'm up there.

link

ive seen a few flyers recently for

"Soul at Joes" in st helens

(st joes catholic club)

The Dynamic 3 Soul Club at Claremont Hotel in Edinburgh - ran until the mid 90s. Absolutely dynamite - great DJs in the shape of Keith Money, Alan MacKenzie, Lenny Harkins, Ronnie Heeney and Mark Wilson and superb guests from down south. Upfront, passionate music with an accent on quality tunes. It was my introduction to the rare soul scene as a 21 year old in 1995. The best!

Hammy

I can remember once asking the DJ (can't remember who it was, for some reason in those days my mind seemed a little removed from reality blink.gif ) for Bobby Sheen, then over a succession of different nights, he used to find me and tell me that he'd be playing it in around 12 minutes.......certainly a nice one to one club... whistling.gif

You dont have a dvd for sale do you?? whistling.gif

I just put onto to DVD to backup as I'm legally intitled to do, I think?

I could 'lend' it to you indefinatley, as you end up 'losing' it anyway!

In recompense you could send me a CD (or tape) of sounds to listen to as I won't be watching the DVD! :-)

What a great thread. I visited St Ives only the once as it closed not long after. Couldn't find anywhere selling pasties in the morning tho  whistling.gif

For a soulie growing up in Gloucestershire, The all dayers at the Subscription rooms in Stroud, Wheelrights and the Roundabout were must go to places. Sometimes we were lucky enough to hear the sounds before they got 'broke' at Yate.  remember the first time I saw Ion dance, clear as a bell, one Friday night on the sunken dancefloor at the roundabout. Memories like that will never leave you  wink.gif

Also, a little later, soul nights were run at the Swindon Town football club, by a lad called Scouse, (whatever happened to him?). I'm sure it was the only time that ramshackle stadium saw a crowd.

Went to a nighter at the Swan once. Certainly memorable, as was the cobbled floor.

Which reminds me, about the time Yate's first venue over the swimming pool closed, and before the Stars and Stripes opened, the South of England Soul Club ran, I think, a one off in Swanage, at a hotel.

Did anyone else go? What was the name of the venue?

In reply to Mick Smith.......Mick don't you mean the 76 Club in Burton(Alan Day, Sunday's 7-11 1972?) or was there really a 69 club?

Clubs-great nights out;

1. Brit, Nottingham 1972(Billy Swain/Alan Day) playing Sweeter Than..-Valentinos

2. Pendulem,Manchester 1973 Barry Tasker unleashing Lillie Bryant on Tay-Ster(ironically I have his copy)

3. Bowling Green, Newark(Monday Night Soul, 1971 Mitch Ryder, Fascinations etc)

Saw Alan at John Vincents Polish Catholic club the other month.

Venue used by Soul Sam and Arthur Fenn on their modern scene a few years before 88. Well attended.

Remember it happening Mikey though didn't get to one, can't think of name of hotel but I'm sure I've got details at home somewhere, will try & locate for you.

Incidently I'm fairly sure they ran 2 or 3 nights there.

My first local was the Wheatsheaf in London's Kings Road with Terry Davis the DJ c. 1971, friends like Keith Hammond who introduced me to the whole Northern thing having met him at a Four Tops concert in Streatham SW London. Tony Ellis, John Clarke etc. Moved on to the venue mentioned by Dave G above.

First club I went to was the Scene in distant mod days, but the music was called rhythm and blues then. After that the Flamingo, Marquee (live acts Yardbirds, Who, etc.), La Discotheque, Last Chance, Bluesville Manor House and various other London clubs.

Where's my life gone? I looked at some old photos from those days recently and wondered what happened to that young bloke?

Mikey couldn't find name of hotel in Swanage (but I will !) but in Midnight Express 1st issue (Rod Dearloves old mag) Ian Clark mentions it & it ran for 4 or 5 months so definately not a one off. Ian also mentions a few of his current plays (April 2001) which included Paris - Sleepless nights, Magnetics - I have a girl & Cashmeres - Showstopper which was obtained through Dave Withers from Jeff Jefferson, writer & lead vocalist.

Cheers Dave. I'm not quite that senile yet then.

I remember hearing Paris for the first time. A mate (sadly deceased), got a tape from Clarkey, and played it for us in the car. Good job I wasnt driving, cos it blew me away.

  • 3 weeks later...

Just for us 80's children, and a shout for a local bash......Take Two  in Attercliffe Sheffield  around 1988.

link

I remember the Take Two very well, once a month fridays and to my mind one of the best ever venues, suitably sleazy and with a shiny side up hardboard dancefloor. Had a drive by there some time ago and I think it is a Muslim centre or suchlike, this place could have been legendary.

The Revolution, in Sutton-in -Asdhfield near mansfield, my first ever soul night in 68 saw Inez and Charlie Foxx there, a Sam & Dave type revue called the soul Committee, Al Green, Jimmy James, The Fantastics Temps type group, resident DJ Friday night was Petal and on Sunday's Sunshine Jimmy and Laurie, place was very small good atmosphere and almost 100% soul music, big sounds were, Little Hank, Tightrope. Jess & James, Ebony Keys, Frankie Valli. At the same time in Mansfield area we had the 8 bells, Brown Cow run by Steve Studge who runs Early doors soul nights now, Potmakers, Oval, Colours, New Cross and the Swan, in one week you could listen to soul Music every night just to warm up for the Mojo, Up the Junction,Wheel or Lantern etc. Great days 15 yrs old hear "soul time " then on Saturday go to Syd Booths record shop to try and buy it !! Bring back nany memories you Sutton/Mansfield soulies. Went to the Twisted Wheel last Friday great night check it out.

Memories of this place came flooding back during a chat at Sheridan's niter at weekend.... then catching up with a few missed threads and "f*** me".... it's mentioned again....

T'was one of them places once visited never forgotten....

Tis a Muslim centre these days rictic.... often pass it myself....

The place was "legendary" due to its layout, run down features, dancefloor  , regular characters and how it was supposedly often being tried to be "shut down" by the local boys in blue....

Not sure if a "similar" place would be as successful these days....

Whilst thinking about forgotten clubs.... what about the KayGeeBee (KGB) here in Sheffield.... who can remember them....????

Being about 17/18 at the time I remember my mum and dad thinking I'd joined some "Russian Communist" organisation when they saw the membership card with the "hammer and sickle" logo on.... :o :o :o :o

These were great nites with the dear departed Nev Wherry as resident.... weekly nites with the occasional niter following on (if memory not failing me)....

And how many people tried "hiding" in various places whilst they emptied it before letting folks back in for the niter  .... memories.... :o

The KGB was often a meeting place for local folks before shooting over to Wigan.... first met Steve Croft and Adrian there, later of Clifton Hall (Rotherham) and Queens Hall (Bradford) promotions (two more great niters of their day).... sat at Adrian's "record bar" as it "changed over" from nite to niter meant no more queuing up :lol:

DaveG, I remember attending the Swanage Allnighter even travelled down on the train with Ian Clark from Reading one time, think it only ran for a short time, always remember Dave Greet playing George Blackwell... seems like a lifetime ago now.

Mark White and Buey, Remember The 81 Soul Club, High Wycombe, always packed and always a very good night, don't remember fights at Chesham though, oh and Buey did i say i paid £150.00 for Freddie Houston oh i did tell porkies then, more like cost me £70.00...lol but what a good memory you have, still have the same copy too.

Also remember the swimming baths events at Yate with Dave Thorley dressed in trilby hat and pin stripe suit must have been 1976, before it moved to the Stars and Stripes venue.

Ady's West Hampstead do's were fantastic events pre 100 Club.....shit time does pass by.

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Can't think for the life of me the name of the hotel - it wasn't the Durlston Court, was it? I remember going there with Pete French driving, thick fog and following the white lines (no, not that thumbsup.gif ) all the way from Cheltenham. Must have been mad - and then coming out into a freeeeeezing seaside morning!

Yate baths was good fun - hardly a big niter, more a houseparty, but had some good times there. Even better when Dinks took over, we moved to the Stars and Stripes, and my hero Clarkie got into his stride...

Also Rob & Chris Marriot ran a midweek night At The 8 Bells in Mansfield around 78-79, had a couple of top nights there when Searling came down and spun his top tunes of the time ( Cecil Washington, Vickie Baines etc )

Incidentally I dont know if you went to Trotters right at the beginning but it started life as Stewarts ( Banqueting Suite if I remember rightly ) before changing names.

The Chateau Impney was a legend at around the same time. Sunday afternoon "sessions" with "Farmer" Carl Deane spinning the likes of Baby Reconsider when it was a (gasp!) £40 record!

Does anyone else recall these venues? If so, you are very old!

Never went to the Chateau - no transport but I remember Carl Deane. He used to dj at the Queen Mary ballroom at Dudley zoo on Monday nights and the Trappers bar in the safari club on Thursday's.

I actually walked past there last weekend Jerry, and noted my mistake.

I went to a gig at the Subs rooms, I think it was the beat, supported by a Sroud band, and the stage collapsed.

I'm glad there were others who went to Swanage. I really was beginning to think all those late nights had been playing tricks with my mind.

Yeah Mark, couldn't agree more, always remember catching the 69 outside the Classic cinema around 9/9.30 and giggle at all those fruit cakes in tartan trousers and their grandmothers chiffon blouses on, we always were the coolest kids on the street (talking about going to Clifton Hall circa 82/83, just for those who don't have a clue what i'm on about) :)

Correct it was originally Stewarts and was started by Kev Roberts.

Another club I have just thought about KoolKat in Nottingham around 87/88 used to be on a bank holiday Sunday, I think it was in the old premises of the Dungeon or was it the Beachcomber ? from the 60's
