How About A Motown Room?

Recommended Posts

I think it's simple to do a whole night of Motown, unless you're very narrow in your sellection, I could without too much trouble. There are literally 100's of Motown tracks to be played and as generally you're talking around 30 tracks an hour, you can easily do it.

Clasic Motown (Including hits)

Unrelease/Rare Motown (Northern)

R&B/R&R Motown (The Early days)

Crossover Motown (70's)

Modern Motown (80's onwards)

God some of you must live with about 20 Motown tracks, open your eyes.

You do do a good half hour or even more with the Tempts alone.

:shhh::shhh::shhh::shhh::shhh::thumbsup: .

Modern Motown ?,not all of it,if it aint Detroit it aint motown............. :shhh:

I agree a complete night of Motown would be far too much and as i mentioned earlier a Motown & Detroit night would go down much better as it gives a mountain of other options and only held on a one off occasional event.Would go down well IMO.

Agree totally with BrianB, I was also lucky enough to attend the Hebden Bridge do, inclusive of the pre-main event at the Comrades Club, just around the corner from the cinema, again Connoisseurs Motown , from Roman Ginger & TerryJones.I can honestly say it was one of the best functions I've attended in a long time. Also the other points raised by Netspeaky with regard to the Motown catalogue depth, as being primarily a Motown vinyl collector, I know how much space it takes up, but to each and his own etc.etc.

If you go back to the roots of Northern, the late great Dave Godin got it right ''The kids don't want Motown anymore. And he was right. If you want Motown go down to your local grab-a-granny night or gate crash the next wedding reception in your area.

I dont think anyones suggesting that the sort of things played at wedding receptions and shag a granny nights would be played for one minute.Ther is some poor Motown but there is also some absolute wonderfull sounds. In fact I went to a so called Motown night last year as a favour to some friends where the DJ played from CDs including Baby love , Dancing in the street , My guy , Needle in a Haystack , even pluming such depths as The locomotion was played. It was totally dire and unenjoyable. The only good thing it was for charity.

yes, but would you want to (do half an hour of the tempts)? and wouldn't that be a bit 'narrow'? in fact, isn't the whole idea of a motown night a bit narrow? :shhh:4 decades of the Tempts, you can cover every aspect of Soul Music you care to think about, you name it the tempts have covered that style, so no I don't agree that a half an hour of the Tempts is narrow. From what I can gather with most of posts on here is a very limited knowledge of what has come out on Motown across the decades. If you run a Motown night use some imagination it's doesn't have to be Classic Motown Sound or even the Northern aspect of it, surely Motown means whatever came out on the label, as previously noted you can cover every aspect of Soul Music you like to name alls you have to do is open your mind.

Would a Motown room be successful? The answer would be yes if you got enough people to support it. Would work brilliantly within a nighter as you could easily play 4-5 hours of unknown or semi-known Motown, Ric Tic, Soul, Anna label tunes etc. I just finished doing my monthly Motown nights after four and a half years and although we started it by playing classics, its amazing how many quality tunes you pick up that very few people have heard of and never get played (just have to pick up a copy of Jo Wallace's superb compilations to realise how little we know of the sound that got released). This is especially true of Motown's 70s output. At its peak our Motown night was more successful, numbers wise, than the Northern soul night, so that tell's ya something. I will definitely be putting on one offs in the future (probably 3-4 a year). In the meantime I'm really looking forward to Paddy's Northampton Weekender to have all me vinyl signed.

Peace, love and soul

Get yourself along to Prestatyn in October 13th to 17th "Soul Legends" weekender, featuring The Contours, we re-named it from Motown legends to cover a wider spectrum of "Commercial" soul music, we played hours of Motown at Hemsby, non repeated, and it went down a storm with the punters there, we are also putting on a 70s & 80s room as well as The Main Northern venues (4 Rooms) so if you fancy some of the more commercial stuff to mix with your rare soul platters then this could be ideal for you

There are hundred's of Motown songs yes fair enough but who wants to go to them if they are gonna play Boyz II Men or late Stevie Wonder tracks or whatever, save them for disco, soul and R & B nights, we would rather hear all Northern soul on Motown label well me personally. Surely after few hours it gets tired and you go back to same tracks, again can't play the same artist too much. They should stick to playing the few Motown tracks in Northern soul sets. After all as i said if we love both Motown and Northern soul how can we choose what room to go in if they being played at the same time at least when you have Northern room and funk room you can only go in 1 as some might not be into Funk as much as the Northern

Well, here goes!

I am utterly stunned at the lack of knowledge of some of the contributors to this thread on the role and the importance of Motown in our music, and just how many Motown records have been played at various venues up and down the country over the last 38 years!!!!

I am also suprised that some contributors feel that if a record is played a lot it automatically, somehow becomes crap.

Rarity is usually temporary in most cases, as we can all get copies via boots, CDs, the net, tapes, whatever, quality is permanent.

None of us want Jimmy Mac or Boyz to Men to be played at a NS venue. Get bloody real!!

Without Motown there would have been no Northern, end of story.

As for Atlantic, Stax, Motown nights!!!! Bloody hell, they've been going for bloody years. Don't tell me you haven't seen them advertised before across the whole of the country!!!!

If you are into Northern for the idealistic view of rarity only counts, then to me you are into the wrong scene for the wrong reason!!

Have a great bank holiday. ( I love this forum! )

Its not allways rarety,as for no N/scene dont think you`re` right, just think we would be talking about the young sound of Ric-Tic,and argueing whether Ric-Tic records are pop records, and E Starr would still be Detroits No1,no change there then whistling.gif Ken

BrainB I agree most of the posts on here haven't a clue about Motown full stop, you can easily do a Motown night 4-5 hours and this would cover just the Northern side of it, I most probably could do half of it with LP tracks alone, without repeating a single track, even northern night do this do they. ranting_1.gif:wicked:

Dear Outraged of Michigan

Nobody said Motown was crap.

Nobody said there would have been Northern Soul without Motown and nobody said they only liked records because of their rarity.

What's wrong with Jimmy Mack? I loved that record when I first heard it and it took years for me to get sick of it. Are you being a tad hypocritical? Or are you saying that Jimmy Mack was, is, and has always been a crap record?

Gertcha moo cow son!

Have a good weekend. ranting_1.gif

eh? have you got a PhD in reading between the lines? how else do you find yourself 'utterly stunned' that anyone has a 'lack of knowledge' about motown or its 'importance' on the basis of people going, er, i like it but i don't want to hear it all night?

is it not possible that people might:

1) love most of the 60s motown (though recognising some of it is unutterably boring commercialised shite, too)

2) love some of the 70s stuff (more of that is unutterable shite, and anything after about 1978 is IMO)

3) actually possess loads of it, whether on vinyl or cd

4) listen to it a lot

5) read all the books about it

6) have been to detroit loads of times

7) acknowledge its importance in shaping the sound that became northern soul (though maybe not agreeing it was the be all and end all)

and

8) still not actually want to hear it all night?

are you actually berry gordy in disguise? i've never seen the two of you in the same room, that's all

Who said Motown is crap. Jimmy Mack is a great song, if we hated it we would not listen some of us are commenting on why have a Motown night if at times so many tracks are not gonna be Northern soul. Then you forget if it was all Northern based where do we go in what room when all our fav songs are being played in 2 rooms, we can't go in both.

I see you are in North wales, its a full weekend package as with all our events, starts at just £25 including 3 nights accom and all dancehall/concert passes

if 6 share a budget appartment, if you can get a few of your mates to go and you are all local, its actually cheaper than trying to buy wristbands !!! I guarenttee you'll have a great weekend and with somewhere to "crash out" as well our bars will be open right through the night !!!

Anyone interested? Only joking!

I'm doing a night of motown down my club, that way I can get to listen to some half decent music down there, rather than listen to middle of the road bands, playing the same old shite standards!
