Top Tips For 2013

Recommended Posts

Fabulous Marc, i remember Ralf, emailing me asking if i knew it pre last October (Hamburg, weekend), i didn't, i did manage via the web to find the label owners daughter, but didn't get any luck. Have you a copy by the way ?. Ps first time i heard it out was the Sunday boat trip,( played by Ralf ) sounded outstanding. ATB Brett

cheers brett, yes luckily I have a copy. Played it at solid hit in london, the nürnberg weekender at the start of december and our big new years eve weekender here in berlin and alwaysa a full floor and/or people asking what it is. despite having been included on outasights "crossover" cd 99.9 % of teh soul community seem to have not known it before. as you say, brill tune!

Hate the fu**ing thing , ever since the bar steward pulled it of ebay with a day to go, with me being the only bidder at $9.99 :(

did you try your luck last night again ? again another example of strange ebay bidding IMO. Two bidders with low feedback/transactions were bidding the thing up from 15 to slightly over 1500 USD LOL...needless to say neither won it!

yep, good tune. Been known about for some years already though actually. Sort of a collectors tune and I agree, to break thru it needs more copies or in fact copies in the hands of one or two of them so -called top DJ`s. Same with United Sounds although it has been featured in Butch sets druing the last couple of years as a C/UP...think it was Greg Belson who uncovered it (in front of a bigger audience) at last years 22nd Anniversary of the Hip City Soul Club when he deejayed on the friday night. someone must have been very very keen as the next copy appearing on ebay went for almost 3 grand then..in really bad condition LOL !

Jason Perlmutter played united sounds on his annual Carolina radio show about two yr back and made no secret of who it was ...

He announced that the lead singer Anthony Baxter was listening in ,so covering it up would have been out of the question ...

The tune was ripped and posted on YouTube with mock up label ,because there was no google image or record of the actual label .

It was later posted on Facebook crossover thread and that's where it came to a lot of people's attention ..it was also announced in that post that it was being played as a C/U by Butch .

Yep....started his show with 'It's all over (baby)' and ended it with the killer ballad flip. Tracklisting is here, dated 10th February 2011.

One i'll be spinning this year. 60's dancer that i first heard from Adam Topping at the Euro weekender in Manchester last year.

It's only a cheapie but an elusive little bugger to find. Probably a marmite record, and i hate marmite, but love this!

this is good rich , really like it. and even dont know what it is which makes it even more interesting to me.

I played it when we were double decking together on the last day of the Manchester Euro Weekender Marc and you asked about it at the time lol :lol: . For me, that final day in Manc was one of the highlights of 2012  .

A few mid-tempo things that I reckon could get plays this year;

Double Trouble - To live is to love (Pilot Master)

Indigos - Rest of my days (Wildfire)

Cooperettes - Win all your love (I-D-B)

Caesars - I've got to know (Both Sides) looking for a clean copy of this btw!

Emanuel Lasky - Just the way (i want her to be) (Music Now)

Elements - Hey lady (saru)

A little more up-tempo;

Benny Hall - Your love got healing power (Mammoth)

Flipside of the Emanuel Laskey is a superb track, will be getting a few spins from me in the year ahead....

I remember that july night when Greg played it at the Hip City and everybody becoming aware that Greg wass playing Butch`s c/up. At once there was a que behind consisting of people who wanted to interrogate woth Greg who it is by...Everybody that night mentioned the C/UP, no one mentioned Jason, his radio programme let alone that group called "Crossover" on FB. Just goes to show not everyone is/can be actively involved in social media activities like FB all the time so tends to miss out on some interesting bits of information.

Definitely mate, it was indeed great, and fantastic and highly enjoyable that double-decking session with yours! Indeed we should have already repeated it a long time ago !! highlight/best moment of the whole weekender for me as well ..maybe only rivalled by that mountain of shoes created by some students or festival visitors in the middle of the dancefloor later that very same night which was accompanied by a Soulie wearibng a KTF black fist Northern Soul t-shirt shaking me hands and saying "Welcome to Engalnd mate, this is Northern Soul" !? LOL

I'd picked up a few spares before playing it out, cheap but not as easily found as his other 45s. Always seems to get a good reaction when I've played it or heard it played

Not everyone can be or is actively involved in the all nighter scene either Marc.

it's a case of where you heard it first ,which is probably why every time someone mentions a record on any "new to me tunes " ,someone is quick to respond with " it's been around for yrs ,just not that well known "

The 1st official or maybe unofficial copy to be heard by the masses ,was via youtube and that clip was ripped from Jason's radio show ,so maybe you underestimate just how many people listen to radio and podcasts to find new stuff :g:

Unless i'm mistaken Clay Brown on aljon was also a Jason Perlmutter radio play a few yrs back now ?

Bobs sitting in the parks has probably introduced more new stuff to a lot of other people than going to venues has over the last few yrs .

Ian Wright podcasts .. Mr Finewine ,Andy Noble ,Fryer ,Greg Belson,Dave Ripolles ,Steve Clancy to name only a few ,are more responsible than any upfront nighter scene ,for introducing me and many others to new sounds ,but that's not saying they are responsible or being given the credit for finding or breaking the sounds ,but then again if your gonna play something as a cover up ,the downside is people might credit the 1st person they heard play it uncovered ???

The first time i heard Sag war fare .. scott three .. small society ,Hopkins Brothers ,Billy Bailey ,Fred Williams ,Superbs ,Tommy and the Derby's was not in a venue ,but from podcasts ,youtube and emailed sound files .

It's a double edged sword .. the internet is helping and hindering the soul scene ,making it easier for people to access the sounds without having to go over the doorstep and visit the venues!

Back on topic ... New one from me that i only heard this yr on one of Gregs gospel shows SILVER TRUMPETEERS -UNDERSTANDING ( CALVARY )

I find a bit of both - there are a few particular DJs I always hear new things from when they play, but also so much rare excellent material from the online shows - all of the people mentioned above are must listens.

Also as Marc pointed out comps are always worth checking out as there are often very obscure and largely unknown tunes on them - Point Of View being a great example.

Think we are in a great period of new or largely unknown material turning up of all genres - from that excellent old skool r&s James Lynn Marsh right through to left field jazzy funky stuff. That's without all the unissued pieces that are found. Venues might be suffering a touch but musically it's all good!

Guest Brett F

Too be honest I only listen via the web to stuff i dont know or recognize, so much out there, and i spend too much time listening to thousands upon thousands of sound clips from all sources, both UK scene type groups, FB,sound/mix cloud, etc, but mainly foreign blogs, eBay clips etc, when in a venue environment, i find myself distracted and unless its special, rarely bother a visit to the decks anymore.

although its sad and should be the other way round really I think you are right. furthermore to be always up to date with new stuff or fairly newer /semi-known stuff you have to be on the case everywhere, niters, podcasts, soundclouds, mixclouds, radio shows, cd`s, ebay, soul-source, fb and all its various groups etc etc etc just too much really. hence why people (like me) end up hearing stuff first via a dj at an allnighter (butch in this case). a bit like in old times really, despite you had them so called collectors tape swaps back then. seems as if they are complete replaced by now by the list of possiblitites I compiled earlier in this message.

plus and to repeat myself here, I sadly never listened to Jasons shows due to a lack of time. same applies to finewine etc. I know jason personally and met him a few times here in Berlin, a top bloke and knows his stuff for sure. so I am more than sorry to have missed his shows back then. If I wouldnt have I might have been able to catch up with you on stuff like Clay Brown/Aljon ;) LOL

Sorry a bit late to this one - not read any yet but will later!

I'll still be playing 'Sweet Rain - Love don't go away - RCA'

From a 70's acetate LP I got last year - Fantastic mid 70's dancer

Cheers

Steve

You put it on the complimentary CD for your Leyland soul night sometime last year. Brilliant!

Here's a Top Tip of my own. Been playing this for the past year or so and it always gets the crowd's attention.

Previously Unreleased and only available on a scarce Jap album.

Bobby Moore & The Rhythm Aces feat Chico Jenkins

"Can't Get Away"

Enjoy!

Sean

Nice!

I think one of his Chess 45's 'Give me your love right now' could well become a Crossover reactivation too?

Never been massive, only early doors spins (I think?)

Another quality item; I've been playing this for many, many, years and since the early 'Just Soul' sessions it's finally starting to gain the respect it deserves!

From the late Paul Kelly - "You Make Me Tremble"

Sean

You 'Just Soul' boys have certainly put this on the map - I hear it in one or two other quality venues these days too mate?

Cheers

Good record, Steve. Played this a few times at the White Barn last year & will probably give it a few more spins in 2013 too.

Cheers

This being my favourite.

Yes brillant, I put that on an lp only cd swap on here a couple of years back. It Goes On & On is probably my fave but it changes each time I play it. One of the very best 70's lp's imho
