The card is very slightly thinner, but I always use three, trim them down a centimetre for better fit, and that makes a very solid package. And again, they are cheap! And pen smudges when you write on them. Brown card mailers all the way. Re-usable, made from re-cycled material, stronger. Harder to see the writing on them though. And twice the price. Don't know about the tops, I always ask people to open up the sides anyway as I pack them tight and the records won't come out the top unless forced.
