Ethics I Want My Baby Back

Why the hell I’ve listed this out of my collection - I just don’t know. So many collectors have asked me to get them a copy - I thought, hey let’s list it and let it find it’s own level.

But I’m already regretting it - I adore all the vocal-group Northern Soul dance tunes and to be honest if this was one of 3 or 4 know copy, I don’t think £5,000 would buy it.

Quality,Quality, Quality!! it just reeks of CLASS saturated in everything that drew me into Northern Soul the first place…

Ernestine Eady Let's Talk It Over

A Philly Northern Soul trophy… sprinkled with Detroit Genius!

You are viewing this great labels RAREST most wanted, most valued release. Most probably the company in its infancy were taken by surprise with the huge local success Fantastic Johnny C was about to receive with his debut single “Boo-ga-loo Down Broadway” all releases from 300 to 309 seem to be rare to varying degrees. As the rush to get Johnny C’s follow-up on the streets only 4 releases later. Whatever the reason the “Miami” releases, Imperial C’s etc suffered from lack of promotion with Ernestine’s masterpiece being not only the best but also the very rarest of them all.

A former Wigan Casino Richard Searling cover-up that has remained a preposterous want for all Northern Soul collectors for near 4 decades now. After the first two releases of Miami, recordings Phil L.A. Of Soul decided to live up to it’s name and release a Philadelphia recording from “Junior” record label owner Kae Williams who runs with this celebrated Bobby Martin composition to deliver us with a perfect example of girl-vocal Northern Soul.

Listen to this stunning mid-tempo groove as it builds and builds to fever pitch; on a wave of Ernestine’s penetrating vocal, embroidered with piano, vibes, blaring horns and Mike Terry’s perfectly timed Bari-tone sax interventions. (Mike would go on to feature on many Cliff Nobles & Fantastic Johnny C. Phil L.A. Soul sessions)

It’s Brilliant in the extreme…with proven rarity of near 40 years of Northern Soul archeologists digging, scraping and scouring every corner of the USA in hope of unearthing a copy…

Lou Courtney The Common Broken Heart

Already elevated to must-own status by Soul-DJ extraordinaire Sean Hampsey always a man ahead of the crowd…is this 1974 limited PROMO only press lifted from Lou’s highly-prized Epic album “I’m In Need Of Love” one of the tracks that elusive album is pursued for.

This is the only way to own this killer tune as a 7”.

Check out the big full-on orchestra intro of blaring horns, vibes and strings, then they all change key and pace, as it takes on a Philadelphia style invitation for the sleek vocal of Mr. Courtney to glide in to. As L.C. takes the microphone the backing adds Hobo’s, flutes, all manner of percussion and a relentless male vocal group chorus; all blended and refined as the crafting of a 5 minutes 30 second maelstrom of SOUL!

Utterly gorgeous stuff..no wonder your album Mr. C., is so very sought after - but for the Soul Essence-styled DJ this compact 7” rarity is so much easier to work with and a 100 x rarer.

Naked Truth The Shing-a-ling Thing

Hunters of the RCA Black stock will know full well this Philly instrumental is one of the very tough ones to acquire.

When Instrumental was King in the early 70s the Northern Soul scene shook to the full-bodied piano strokes of Leon Huff and Ray Gilmore’s guiding of the brass section which produces an indomitable instrumental that these days would wreck an All-nighter dance-floor with a surprise spin.

Proper Northern Soul from a stable that gave us so many killer 60s dance tunes. Demand saw an Orange label 2nd. press in 1974, the PROMO copy occasionally pops up. But as the lusted-after Black Stocker in flawless condition is an envy-piece for all those serious about rarest-formats.

Discovered at the bottom of box we’ve had hanging around for maybe decades, of course it’s MINT as the mailer was sealed. Can there be a better way of owning this Chicago Big City Beater than this..fully clothed vision of retro-beauty.

We think not..

Mixed Feelings Sha-la-la

Monster rare-soulful dance, a Keb Darge discovery that leading Northern Soul jock “Butch” first played, with the world renown Soul Sam following on behind, the pair made this 45 one of the biggest rare 70s dance tunes of this century so far.

An uplifting dance production that ignores all the commercial “Disco” influences in it’s makeup, lead by a strong and soul male lead (provided by the mysterious Arthur Donaldson) with a buoyant girl group relentlessly delivery a feelgood chorus.

So very good you can’t help but want to dance to it.. rare in the extreme and rightly consider a Jewel in the Crown of rare 70s Soul collecting.

Brenda Holloway Stay In School

What ever the reputation of USA President Nixon at least during his controversial office his “Youth Opportunity Program” provided Northern Soul DJ & Motown collectors with a super-rare 45s to hope to own.

Before you today is the hideously rare Brenda Holloway promo only Motown recording “Stay In School” echoing everything we love about Motown, Northern Soul & this songbird’s voice!

Maybe a glowing rewrite of Mr. Nixon’s history is in order, remembering - Jimmy Frazier - Of Hopes Dream & Tombstones - was born from the same initiative.
But don’t forget this Brenda Holloway disc is 100 or more times rarer than “Jimmy”

Dane Hunter Too Late

For fully 40 years London based Oriole Records furnished the British Record Collector with not only home-made local recordings but also releasing some of the finest material the USA had to offer notably Motown and the Brent/Time labels. Until their demise in late 1965 when CBS made the label defunct after a recent takeover.

Towards the end of it’s life in 1965, Orioles all seem to have failed with promotion and consequently radio play. Check out this elusive PROMO a particularly rare one. A January UK produced MOD shaker written by Mort Schuman and Clive Westland it’s a feelgood stormer encapsulating the mood of the mid-60s completely; But tucked away on a flipside, it too passed unnoticed with little or no sales.

Rare 1965 PROMO that we feel few of our UK completists will own and this head-turning DEMO copy is immaculate..

Dynamic Five Lover's Lullabye C/w Sky Boat

SWEET SOUL HEAVEN!

One of those extremely elusive major label recordings you rarely see on PROMO and never see as the STOCK copy.

This mysterious 1977 press gives up sublime Sweet Soul Harmony on the a-side, supported by solid Boogie dancer on the flip.

The sweet side is led in by a cultured vocal soon to be joined a “cold as ice” falsetto all cradled by a blanket of strings and a lush harmony duvet rolled out te rest of the team. This is Sweet Soul at it’s most-lavish with stand-out vocals woven into a slick arrangement ! GORGEOUS STUFF!

Flipside which you so rarely come across in a Norman Whitfield inspired funk infused dance tune, again utilizing an over-loaded string section that drives this uplifting session as the guys use all their finely-honed vocals in a dance production.

Two great sides and one very tough 45 to find!

Rudy Ray Moore Real Gone

Very elusive Los Angeles R&B dance rarity!

Check out this down-right-dirty tune, perfectly suited to Rudy’s nicotine-coated growling, listen as the California bluesman rasps his way through this Nellie Lutcher song, made utterly compelling as Gus Anderson devises a production blend of saxophone & girl to compliment his gruff vocal-style.

Unbridled saxophone with killer lone-break aided by a squealing girl-group chorus add the required ingredients to lift this session from a R&B dance groove, into a stand-out R&B shaker of the meanest kind!

Rare and this copy is flawless MINT -

Magnificent Men Inc: Keep On Climbing

A seven man team with the distinctively soulful vocal of Dave Bupp leading the way, trumpet blasts from Buddy King, irrepressible saxophone purrs of Tom Pane, with Bob Angelucci on Drums, Terry Crousore on guitar, Tommy Hoover on Hammond and bass player Jimmy Seville driving the rhythm.

All adding up to one of the most talented blue-eyed-soul assembles of all-time. This the first of 4 albums this team released, and the one of most interest to rare-soul fans as it boasts the impressive non-45 Northern Soul track - “Keep On Climbing”

Check out the soundfile and await the “blackest” sounding white guys imaginable; They carry a WOW factor in everything they performed during their early years backed by an orchestra directed by Sonny Sanders & Horace Ott and the producer who guided Nancy Wilson to greatness, perfectionist Marvin Holtzman crafts another album masterpiece full of soul.

Johnny Caswell You Don't Love Me Anymore C/w I.o.u.

Seekers of the Northern Soul BLACK stock copy’s this is the ultimate prize if you desire the real classics!

A true Wigan Casino anthem from the desk of Len Barry & team-mates Leon Huff, John Madara, David White & Jimmy Wisner.

Leon Huff’s keyboard work & those memorable vibes transport us all back to the zenith of the Northern Soul scene as the unique intro signals a rush for dancefloor space. As good today as it ever was!

But do not overlook the so far neglected flipside “I.O.U.” which epitomizes the music these guys were churning out in the mid-60s. Clever lyrics (courtesy of Len Barry) the instantly recognizable drumming of Bobby Greg, Joe Mack On Bass, Trade Martin & Vinnie Bell on Guitar, Artie Kaplin guides the latin influenced horns with Panama Francis adding extra percussion

A sorely missed studio-team that gave the Northern Soul scene not only this classic listing but also Joey Heatherton, Bunny Sigler’s and all Len Barry’s Decca recordings…

Wow that Ethics 45 wasn't cheap!

I thought that - £459 is totally absurd

I sold a mint demo on here late last year for £100 which seems fair for a promo in that condition

As has been said before people bidding these amounts either have no idea of value or too much money to throw away - either way it's falsely inflating the prices of certain records

That Naked Truth RCA issue - Mick Smith had one in his box for years, I used to joke with him that he would never sell it - it was £30 and he sold it at the last Cleethorpes, he thinks.

Naked Truth RCA stock copy  should be no more than £50 pounds any one pays more than £50 pounds needs their head testing

Wow that Ethics 45 wasn't cheap!

I used to play this out when it was a £20 record and i always used to say on the mic that 'this should be a massive northern tune'. it looks like finally it is becoming massive, and so it should be , it' s a f'ckin awesome piece of feel good, uptempo killer group harmony soul. If it was rare it would be worth a bomb, at least £450....oh right.
