The Mighty Bub - Would Have Been 60 This Year

Recommended Posts

Watching red nose day reminded me of a red nose day 20 years ago - it was Bubs 40th birthday at Normanton

We bought him a case of booze and a very nice stripogram.

She put shaving foam on her chest and made him promise - No hands

Thats why its all over his face - he couldn't get rid of the smile all night

I published these and a few others in galleries

Awwww Bub, what a character!!

I remember him walking in to Cleethorpes (6t's weekender), ready to d.j, with a long box of records (may have been two boxes), & he shouted out "there ain't any records in here, it's just my lunch"

Happy Birthday Big Fella

Remember Bub well from the Winter Garden all dayers - when I was just starting out. He was a big fella on the scene then - not size wize, although he was obviously a big old lad. A very popular man bless  him.

Whats the name of your gallery Derek - can't see the pics in the post.

My first trip away was mid 1973 to Top Rank Hanley. Remember just getting in the place in and first thing I saw was this big fella in a black school blazer with red trim. No direspect to Bub but I remember thinking to myself "Fook me, It's Billy Bunter"  :D

Rolling on a few years remember well we used give Bub a lift back in the morning from Wakefield to Barnsley in Poke's Escort Estate. He used to sit in the front and Poke used to nearly break his arms trying to steer the thing. If you listened carefully as Bub got out you could actually hear the front suspension groan with relief.

Bless him,  a big fella in more ways than one and wherever he is he'll be making 'em laugh.

Thanks for the pics, great stuff.

A quick view of Bub here at 0.22

Remember a charity night held at Samanthas, Bub and myself went in early as rest of coach went for a drink. I shouted over to him from bar - What do you want to Drink ?

2 bottles of Pils and a pint pot was the reply.

Someone behind the bar said - DJ's drink for free tonight.

Make it a crate and don't forget the glass shouted Bub.

He sat on the crate and demolished the lot - ordered another and did the same.

Good night

Top quote mate, My first recolections of him was when he was a bit tipsy and he had got 2 chairs to sit on behind the decks, He said one for each cheek of my fat arse when i went to talk to him,

He laughed at life and himself.

He is missed along with all the other LEDGENDS.

Knew Bub from cleethorpes , then me and a mate went to Amsterdam to watch United (European Cup) late 70's and walked round this corner and there was a Sunblest Bread van just parking up and about 10 lads got out the back. Next thing I here is 'ay up ' fook me it was Bub in a bowler hat and a massive Union Jack wrapped around him. Top bloke , my kinda DJ , was never shy about what he played or anything else for that matter , happy memories eh!

Swifty

Bloody great night that was Derek.

Another sadly missed, some great funny times with Bub, yourself and the rest of the Barnsley crew.

Agreed Chalky, my thoughts are allways of those days at this time of year, those weekends in scarborough. Havn`t read the rest of the thread. I was at Normanton that night, wasn`t the stripogramme a policewoman?

Think she was "H", we all chipped in if I remember rightly to pay for her.

I remember the christmas bash at Thorne when the Dj booth was a tiny thing in the corner.  We had to push Bub in and someone had to pass him his records and bottles of pils out of his customary crate as no more room in the booth.

He was one of the funniest blokes I ever met, funnier than many comedians.  Had some great nights at the Tracky on a Tuesday's when we'd just stick a tape or LP on and sit and be entertained by Bub.

Such a brilliant bloke, lots of memories of Bub especially ice cream at Scarborough, Cleethorpes and the Tracky; we once - stupidly tried to keep up with his drinking at the Windmill; his "drink" was a pint, a barley wine and a double whiskey!, failed of course much to his amusement which we were never allowed to forget! A legend much loved often discussed and sadly missed.

I had some great times with him back in the day . Just a big bundle of laughs and plenty of heart . I lost touch with him when  I left the scene . Much later my daughter was training to be a nurse at Barnsley hospital and she phoned me to tell me she was one of the nurses who was looking after him . God bless big man.

I remember Bub from the Portcullis Club in Monk Bretton back around 1975.

He had a charachter bigger than his waist line and was always good for a laugh.

One of the good guys.

I had the pleasure of working with Bub, DJing every week at a venue called Adeles, this was a wanna be night club in Denaby.

Had some great Soul nights there with Bub, turnout was'nt great but all attendees enjoyed it,  Around 1984 to 1985.

Great fellow, laughs all night, beers all round, never stopped joking and fooling people, made my time around him very enjoyable, TOP CLASS.

We had Jimmy Ruffin there, Detroit Emeralds, Tommy Hunt, Jimmy James, Real Thing, lots more on other nights like Ken Dodd, Paperlace, Mungo Jerry.

Had to use bigger premises though for Gloria Gaynor, Put her on at Rotters in Doncaster.

Had some pics of Bub and all the gang of not-rights from Conisbrough in the Sallisbury Hotel in Scarborough, this would have been around 1979, think they may be at my parents house, if not the EX ended up with them. will do some digging.

Does anyone remember the time outside the Salisbury Hotel in Scarborough, when BuB had parked his Zephyr Zodiac (Flying Pig) just down the road when he spotted a traffic warden just about to put a ticket on the screen, all you could see was BuB running towards his car Getto Blaster in one hand and suddenly tripped and went straight on to his knees all you could see was batteries flying everywhere everyone cracked out laughing, A true Character and do miss him, especially on the 10th of March each year as its my wife Jacque's birthday also

Another time was when BuB was DJing at Rudies Nightclub in Scarborough when he decided to have a laugh, he set off one of the fire extinguishers on the stairs covering himself and the bouncers with foam, needless to say he was promptly ejected and lost his DJing spot.We nearly laughed the roof off that night!

grt birthday memories of bub, port cullis, londoner, cleethorpes, adele,s,and many more to mention especially going to cleethorpes in the fruit wagon, think the northern scene is a sadder place without him, because if bub was around you got what u got with loads of laughter miss you, never a dull moment, got a video of him somewhere polishing his records on his jumper classic..........love michele and brendan x

A hero.

I was presented the mighty bub award for most promising young Dj at cleethorpes one year. Its one of my most prized possessions and completely honoured. He was the epitome if what makes this scene great. Great people with great taste in music.

Sadly missed

Make no mistake about it Bub will be up in heaven playing:- It keeps rainin' by fats Domino, it was his fav if not one of his all time favourite sounds. Also the loss of Mick Cook was always with him as he always played Michael the Lover by the cod's and dedicated it to Mick.

Derek .  Surely Bub would be over 60 ...   he was riding that motorbike to  Va Vas  with his arse cheeks hanging over like John Wayne’s SaddleBags in 72    He was 18 then ....   and he was 17 and working at the pit when we went to the junction and he got stuck  going through the trap door .... lol

my favourite memory is of him walking down our garden path and my dad  glancing up from his newspaper . Without batting an eyelid says to my mom ..  “ Edith tha better goo and get some grub in “” this one favvers he con eyt orse “

Total one off. " I,am here to educate not F*****g entertain" one of my favourites when asked for a record. Saw a few DJ,S in later years trying to F & Blind whilst jocking ( James Trouble comes to mind) but nobody could hold a light to him. Really nice lad and a true character. The scene is a lot poorer without him

I've been racking my brain, trying to remember the tattoos Bub had on his fingers of both hands and on the picture above I can see he had soul on his left hand and there's no picture of his right hand anywhere, then it came to me he had B C F C on his right hand. On the photo above showing the three fists one is Bubs of course and the others are Gary from Rotherham and Brun from Wakey.     Great photos and memories as I'm now 65 and classed as an old codger Lo l.        All the best Regards Fred.

I was once at the Ace ballroom in Royston Barnsley and Bub was billed to be on doing a spot. Well the time came for his spot and we all thought where the hell has Bub got to, when someone near to the entrance door heard this loud banging. He opened the door and in walked Bub looking like a drowned rat. It had been raining very heavy and Bub said  I've been banging on that door for the last half hour or so are you all fookin deaf? seeing him stood there soaking wet hair all fallen forward with his record box in his hand we all cracked out laughing as it was hilarious. Bub what a funny guy he was and we all loved him. Probably the best if not one of the best characters the scene has ever had.                          Regards Fred.

I know he was in Kes...

I think he played Parker, second last player to be picked..

To the right in the screen shot.

If you've never met him, you missed out for sure. He'd remember your name next time.

A giant of a man in body and soul.

As others have said, he should have done stand up comedy.

The nights at The Tracky club midweek were superb, usually about a dozen or so of us, all being entertained by Bub.  He was funnier than most comedians.  Brilliant bloke sadly missed.
