The purists seem to say that you can't really have soul without the vocals..............but instrumentals have always been played at soul clubs so far as I know and I love 'em.

You certainly don't need to hear vocals to dance to a tune.

I don't know which is the rarest or most popular, but these are among the best in my opinion;

Davis & Tyler - hold on help is on the way

Billy Preston - billy's bag

Righteous Bros Band - rat race

Earl Wright - thumb a ride

Eddie Bishop - call me

The Brothers - are you ready for this

Hesitations - that's what love is

Dynatones - the fife piper

The lad Teens - white rice

David Hamilton - the deacons

The Soulful Strings - comin' home baby

Earl Van Dyke - 6x6

Booker T - green onions

................and last but not least.....Ramsey Lewis - wade in the water

Instrumentals are mostly s**t in my opinion (yes I am a purist  ) but there is the odd good one.

I had one that was popular and pretty good on british polydor called -ring the changes by paradox, maybe the other way round   it was a pretty wobbly time for me! Anyway, story had it there were only two copies, bought mine from Guy Henigan and most Rev Tony Clayton bought it from me. Never saw another copy before or since

All time fave instrumentals would include -on the road to ruins by earl wright, baritrack and exus trex.

good question... what is the hardest/rarest instro????

most quality instrumentals can be picked up cheaply i suppose because off the lack of air play...out off vogue and for purist reasons lol

Keymen Strings-Try a Little Harder. Dogs-Soul Step. Roy Roberts-Got to Have Your Love(love recorded take, but would be a great instrumental too me thinks). Isn't there an instrumental take of Ann Perry-That's the way he is? Young Holt-California Montage
