Casino Chart Hits

RULE - The record had to have been played IN the Casino (but not exclusively) but went on to be a UK Chart hit at the time the Casino was running. Or to put it another way, if it charted before or after the Casino, it's a no no.

Here's a couple to get you going:

Gloria Gaynor - I will survive ( I know most on here will hate this but is this the biggest in terms of gobal popularity? played VERY briefly before it charted)

Candi Staton - Young hearts run free (Another played briefly as was the brilliant flip side)

There are loads of others, lets see how your memories are.

i think the man should have released himself from his ego and he may have had a more positive influence on the scene (not that anyone has a right to 'own' or 'influence' the scene)

Did 'You got the best of my love' The Emotions ever get a play? I love this record and wonder how it would go down when played out?

wayne gibson, nosmo king(javelles), tami lynn, Little Anthony - Better use your head.

Tami Lynn must surely have been a wheel sound (?) as I'm sure it was in the charts 70/71 on mojo?

Not to my knowledge Matt, no. It hit the charts almost as soon as it was released. The beat was not really right for the time either (imho of course).

That said, it's a brilliant track from a brilliant album which I bought at the time and yes, it would be great to hear it played.

Something tells me 'New York City - I'm doing fine' was played on the Northern Soul scene. Was that as a new release, or before??

A later one. I can remember Booker Newbury the third - love Town being played at Yate. I'm sure that was ages before it was released in the UK. So there is every chance it was played at the Casino too.

Yeah, I forgot about Jeffrey Osbourne, i liked it. I even bought it. But i was such a soul fascist in those days i stopped dancing to it as soon as it charted. Actually it probably stopped getting plays at Stafford anyway.

New York City was played in the Highland Ball Room and the Torch as a new release, but I don't think it was played in the Casino, as it had already hit the pop charts prior to the Casino.

The Emotions "Best" was played at the Casino with Boogie Wonderland, as new releases. most of the Soul Disco hits of the day were being played at the Casino at this time, but were dropped almost immediately they had a UK release. Remember this was the time it was being voted best DISCO in the world.

Examples

The Bombers

T-Connection

Celi Bee & The Buzzy Bunch.

Alicia Bridges

plus loads of others

Maxine Nightingale "Right Back" was also played.

So that's a few more cleared up. whistling.gif

I have just checked. New York City was released in 1973!. Knock me down with a mallet. I thought it was much later.

OK throwing another into the possibles. On Broadway - George Benson. I can remember the floor at The Roundabout full of guys and girls shuffling along to this one. Played before it was released or not?

Got a feeling that Maxine Nightigale was most certainly played at Wigan.

The Zoo was an absolute monster - surely that charted for the Commodores?

Love on a mountain top - big at the Torch wasn't it?

The Tams - Be Young Be Foolish Be Happy

Tams (Hey Girl & Be Young) were hits well before the Casino so was Robert Knight, so don't count.

Help here guys who sang that version of Love & Desire that charted I can't remember off top of my head, it's been bugging me and it hasn't been mentioned yet.

Just to keep things in perspective...

I hope people aren't suggesting that all of these records became pop hits just because they were played at The Casino.

They were many other clubs (and radio stations) all around the country that played these records (and many others) as new releases.

Paul if you read my first post, the post was about Chart records that were played in the Casino, but not exclusively. So no the post wasn't about saying that they became hits because they were played in the Casino. It was just a way of showing that the Casino actually played lots of Hit songs, something we have tended to overlook in it's history as we like to keep our scene underground and rare.

:boxing: The classic re worker of the standard "what a Differance a Day Makes" by the fabualas Esther Phillips. must be one of the top tunes that was ever played, first at the Mecca on release and oat the Casino while it was still in the US R&B charts, it hit the UK 14 months later DISCO wise, I suppose this is true of "YMCAby the Vilage people"? DAVE KIL

re the chart wigan thing. an earlier post (Paul Mooney) .I think a lot of the sales were Wigan related as when the older guys and girls got back to the local clubs and youth clubs (and there were lots in Scotland so there must've been hundreds in England) the sounds filtered down to us i remember buying Celi b and the buzy bunch (album), Eddie kendricks keep on trucking ,Undisputed Truth YOU + me = love,Jimmy Castor Bunch Troglydite. I bought all these blind on the recomendation of guys like Bruce,Jolly and Graham Clarke who were Scottish guys who went to the Casino and Mecca.
