Here's a bit of (blue & brown eyed) soul linkage ....... think it qualifies as trivia .........

....... Kane & Able  --  "Life of the Party" on Destination ......

Kane & Able were Al Herrara & Artie Herrara from Milwaukee, they had been lead singers with Little Artie & the Pharaohs back in Milwaukee.

The track was produced by local promoter Joe DeFrancesco in conjunction with Jim Holvay & Gary Beisbier of the Mob (Holvay also wrote the song with Holvay & Beisbier arranging the track).

Not long after this threesome had worked with the Herrara brothers on their track, DeFrancesco suggested to Holvay that the Mob needed new lead singers. He suggested Al & Artie, who had gone back to fronting Little Artie & the Pharaohs. Holvay took on the suggestion, Al & Artie were approached and accepted the offer to join the Mob.

The new outfit (the Mob) went from strength to strength and made some fine records.

BUT for a brown eyed duo, Al & Artie (Kane & Able) sound real soulful on "Life of the Party".

Peggi Blu(e), singer, performer and American Idol "vocal coach from hell" is Carl Hall's sister. Both performed in the stage production of The Wiz and appeared alongside Stephanie Mills, but brother and sister were never together in the show.

Carl Hall appeared in the 1977 Broadway production (as The Wiz himself), while his sister did the national tour of the production. Mills did both.

Carl and Peggi both recorded with Stephanie Mills in the studio. And likewise both recorded with Lou Courtney.

Peggi's disco hit "I got love" came about because Carl introduced his sister to Jerry Ragovoy.

Gil Scott-Heron's father played football for Glasgow Celtic. (Scott was his mother's maiden name rather than being due to the Scottish connection).

Too serious and sad to be considered trivia but worth noting: James Debeunere of The Appreciations was killed in the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon.

Had the pleasure of looking after Doris Troy this night! I escorted her from the above venue too I think Bretby...or The Ritzy for an A/N appearance afterwards...forget which!! Picture this.....the 4th tune my mate played me in 1974 was Doris's I'll Do Anything! Luv'd it ever since and indeed is perhaps the most prolific record I see at boot sales from a Northern perspective over the past 30 years!

So....although in my businesses i have dealt with 'the stars' of all types....I was particularly excited meeting Doris! I wasn't dis-appointed! She jumped in the back of the car....said....'do you mind if my Girlfriend come sit with me Sooty'? "Of course not!" I replied happily! Her bubbly Lady friend jumped in....and as we drove through Nottingham they shared the happiness that 2 'lovers' would after an exciting set she had just done in the S/N! Then...she said did i have a problem with gay relationships?! I said "no....me mams gay and has been all me life!" They both became real 'cosy' and we drove around the Nottingham ring road for an extra 20 minutes as they gleamed my lifes experiences with me mother her being gay...and why?!!! I asked her the same! We arrived at the next gig 1/2 hour late as she'd insisted i drive around again as they were both fascinated by the 'chat' we were having!

20 years later....and as said....dealing with many stars that would never even know of Doris....I have to say.....she wouldn't do anything for a man 30 years after making the record...like she had done in her time...and I can't blame her after some of the tales she mentioned as her experience with so called Soulful men. Similar to me mam....which is why we 'got on' I suppose!

She recommended me to many of her friends for a discreet VIP service when visiting the UK and we kept in touch thru xmas and stuff until her death in 2004...X We both lived in the real world...and she was an absolute STAR....and she has a place in my thoughts each time i look through my telescope at the night sky! Doris Troy....RIP...X

I can't watch it either - a big red X appeared and made me feel really naughty

Well I can see it ...... the site seems to be one of those Russian unlicensed music vid outfits.

The actual video mainly shows Toni cavorting around in panties & bra (with the bra being absent at times).

Deff trivia here ............

Sprightly soul OAP Lou Ragland still performs at venues in Vegas and across Nevada.

He has also been running a recording studio in Vegas over recent years. This facility is (was?) funded by the local council to help keep young blacks out of gangs & trouble. They would turn up and Lou would assist them making hip-hop / rap tracks or train them in recording studio duties.

...  BUT just recently Lou has been appointed to the position of ...... technician for the LAS VEGAS SHAKESPEARE COMPANY ...........

............... bet it ain't long before Lou's telling me that ........

She actually sheds everything, needs a good trim below

The full video plays through the song with her cavorting and finally stripping off. It then goes backwards.

rod stewart was supposed to have played harmonica on millies my boy lollipop

https://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=5305

"Contrary to legend, the harmonica player was not Rod Stewart but Pete Hogman of The Pete Hogman Blues Band and Hoggie & The Sharpetones. Hogman told us: "The backing for 'My Boy Lollypop' was recorded live in the studio. I played harmonica and Ernest Ranglin played a black Gibson. Several people have claimed to have played the harmonica break but I can promise you it was me, and it was all recorded in London. By the way, Rod Stewart has never claimed to have played that solo, in fact he has said it was me in the Bob Marley life story Catch A Fire."

Northern Oldie -Frankie and Johnnie - ill hold you - were singers from Glasgow!!!

WTF!!!

Am I imagining this? I'm sure I read it years ago?

It used to be said as Maggie Bell and Frankie Miller, but that has since been disproved, Get googling.

It is Maggie Bell, or "a" Maggie Bell.  This is what co-writer said on a youtube clip....

It was written by Maggie Bell, Bobby Kerr and myself, George Paterson when I was the bandleader in Dennistoun Palais in Glasgow. I thought they were great, so I contacted some friends in London and brought them down. This was the result. "I'll Hold You"

The MD arranger on the session was Johnny Harris who was Tom Jones's Musical Director."

Sax player on The Appreciations 'I Can't Hide It' may have been one Willie Mitchell, not Mike Terry, contrary to popular belief..and on their 'It's better to cry' Moses Dillard and the Tex Town Revue backed them rather than the Tempests, again contrary to popular belief!

Just found this on the site from someone who knew John Bowie......

Hello,
Concerning John Bowie. He was lead singer for The Philadelphians; a Philly R&B group of the late fifties and sixties. The Philadelphians used to rehearse at The Community Center located at 10th and Thompson Sts. of The Cambria Hgts. projects. In 1962, I met Big John and members of The Philadelphians at the center. I had a R&B group called The Premieres from The Richard Allen Projects near The Cambria Hgts Projects. Members of The Philadelphians were Big John as lead, Frank Gordon as bass, Sam as second tenor, and Eddie as first tenor. I don't remember the name of the baritone singer. They recorded for Campus Records, Cameo-Parkway and Jamie-Guyden with such recordings as Dear, The Love I Lost, I Missed Her, Coming Home To You, The Vow, Church Bells and My Love- My Love. The Premieres were a new group starting out and they helped us a lot to win a local talent show at The B&R club. We won a chance to record at a Jamie Record Studio on Girard Ave where we recorded "Devil Woman b/w Don't Leave Me". However, our manager then took the tapes of the recording to New York and we never saw him again. Disillusioned, the group disbanded and I went on to sing bass for The Informers (If You Love Me and Baby Set Me Free on J-Rude and Blackjack labels). After retuning home from the military in 1973 I ran into Frank Gordon at a movie theater where he told me that The Philadelphians had split up and John was doing some production and solo work. Big John had did some work with The Delchords out of Harrisburg, Pa. This group was the origin of The Magnificent Men (Peace Of Mind). There also was some word that Big John did some production work with The Three Degrees. Big John later went on to be Little John Bowie on Merben label. I read an article by David Brown from Philly Archives/ Funkadelphia Records written for Scoop newspaper in Philly that Big John had died from a robbery attempt at a gas station where he worked. This article was dated in the 1998 and had the approximate date of death about 1985. As for the other members, according to David Brown, they may all have passed. He didn't know their names. In talking with him I gave him the names I remembered. I hope this info is helpful. I am currently singin bass with a group called Quiet Storm. We sing R&B/Soul from the fifties, sixties and seventies. Perhaps you will hear of us soon. Take Care. Kamau Akiba ( formerly Henry "Smitty" Smith )

Contrary to popular belief, Ellen and the Shandels did not record the song Gypsy before Dry Well. In fact, there was no group called Ellen and the Shandels.

The group known as The Shandels broke up in June 68, some months before the song was even recorded. Dry Well was made up of three ex members of The Shandels along with Ellen, who provides the lead vocals on the Dry Well cut, and another person called Bill.

The likely reality is that someone with the master tapes rereleased Dry Well's Lauren recording without the knowledge of the group and used a different name for the band. Essentially, Ellen and the Shandels on La Salle is a bootleg.

some quotes amongst the comments in this YT clip from someone involved (with Dry Well) apparently?
