On a recent thread on this site (about where to sell deep soul), Roger Hatcher, We gonna make it, was recommended. I bought it on the strength of this and boy is it FANTASTIC. Been playing it non stop! So thanks a tonne for that tip.

Can anyone recommend some others please? Ten quid or under?

To kick us off, here (from my very limited knowledge!) are a few deep cheapies I know and love :

Cryin in the streets, George Perkins (Silver Fox)

Betty Lavette, Your turn to cry (Atco)

Jarvis Jackson, Something I never had (Sims)

Ruben Bell, Asking for the truth but praying for a lie (Alarm)

Jewell Base, Overflowing (for you) (Special Agent)

Cheers

Mark

Jarvis Jackson on Sims ain't necessarily so cheap!

Another absolutely brilliant deep record on Brown Dog which is dirt cheap is Count Willie with LRL and The Dukes "I've Got To Tell You" (also a bit more expensive on Minaret issue with the funk flip).

Indeed it's not - I'll be amazed if you find anyone sellling it at under thirty quid, even given the currently depressed state of deep soul's saleability.

I always recommend Oscar Weathers' "You Wants To Play" (Top and Bottom) to anyone looking for a remarkable record at a remarkably small price. One of the most heartfelt and emotional 45s I've ever owned. Hard to believe that it was cut in Philadelphia, rather than somewhere like Quinvy or Widget in Musicle Shoals. The 'A' side, "The Spoiler" is excellent too - quality midtempo, arranged by Van McCoy

Great value for money at any price, you should surely be able to find one for between a fiver and a tenner...

Yes, my mishtake, I got muddled - think I probably paid 20 quid for mine a couple of years back. B***** worth it, even at 30 quid, though. Fantastic record!

Mark, a few Deep & Cheap recommendations from me -

THE TIME REVIEW - IF I COULD SEE YOU (UNITED VOICE) $15 on Craig Moerer

MR.D & THE HIGHLIGHTS - EVERY NOW & THEN - JAS

EARL GAINS - FRUIT FROM ANOTHER MANS TREE - HOLLYWOOD

CHARLES BRINKLEY - I'LL BE WHAT YOU WANT ME TO BE - MUSIC MACHINE

JIMMY DOBIBINS - WHAT IS LOVE - CRASH

GROVER MITCHELL - I'M STILL IN LOVE WITH YOU - JOSIE

MILTON WESTLEY - GEE WHIZ - T NECK, Just about my favourite tune at the moment, don't know what it goes for but I recently picked one up on a well known auction site for $5.

As Tony says quality Deep Soul can be picked up for bargain prices at the moment. Regardless of whether they are rare or 'unfashionable' I just love this style of our music.

Randomly picked and spun just now from the ever growing ' really must file these ' shelf... Trawl thru ebay / cheap boxes and you'll find these quite easily and cheap..Creeps a bit into southern standard stuff I know but for a random pick - I kinda like it!

Fats Gaines Band with Lou Washington - For Your Precious Love ( Avamar)

Ted Taylor - I'm Glad Your Home (Ronn)

Jimmy Lomax - Remember Me (Camille)

Eddie Billups - I Wont Be Around (Josie)

Arthur Conley - I'm A Lonely Stranger (Jotis)

Irma Thomas - She'll Never Be Your Wife (Fungus)

Doris Duke - How Was I To Know / Feet Start Walking (Canyon)

Johnny Adams - Release Me (SSS International)

Robert Taylor - God Bless Our Love (Sonic)

And the prize for ' Let it all out fall on the knees pray to the lord ' 45 -

Sister Soul - I Surrender (Checker)

A good bottle of red and I'm prayin meself during this 45. Bloody awesome.

Thanks a lot folks. Have ordered a Count Willie and Oscar Weathers and await the happy sound of the postman's feet! Plenty of others there for me to seach for in the coming weeks - and the only one I already know is Doris Duke.

Thanks again for your ideas! Cheers Mark

...Oh man, what a tune! King's version of Otis's "Think About It" is also a crusher in the deep stakes, ditto his "Please Don't Leave Me Lonely" (other side of "Baby Let Me Kiss You").

PS: But don't y'all hate it when a deep soul essential is hidden on the b-side of some stupidly rare northern tune - for example, The Icemen's mighty original of "It's Gonna Take A Lot To Bring Me Back" on Ole-9 - and you just know A) that you're never gonna be able to find one, much less afford one and cool.gif that the northern diehard who does own it for the other side has probably never played more than a few bars of the deep side....

Pretty good, overall - I remember being a bit disappointed with it when I first heard it because it had a smoother sound than those great Chimneyville/Malaco productions, but as time's gone on I've come to appreciate it on its own merit. The album that came out on Motown's V.I.P label to cash in on "Groove Me"s success (which is also Pulsar era stuff) is uniformly listenable.

...I second all of these emotions.

Sometimes I envy those who just like deep soul - how much greater their bank balances must be than those of us who also can't resist those three figure Northern goodies, and how much more bang they must get for their buck!

Thanks for the KF / Pulsar info Tone

More bang for your buck - LIke that! Sounds like a seedy film..or soulies in a sidestreet store hunting for 45s.. Psst Wanna look at my white demos????

I see what you mean - but then I guess the big ticket chasers get their bangs from spending big bucks! I do like my northern but get more pleasure (I cant help the innuendo! from my sweet / group / deep / ballad stuff on a personal level.

What I love about these kinds of threads (be it northern or otherwise) is the spread of knowledge. Lists like Sean H's .. Brilliant. On a sidenote - Rod @ Voices opened my ears and eyes as just to how much quality soul there is out there.

Now back to the filing..Lets see what else I can pull out..ooh err...

I havent had it that long but I didnt think it was that pricey although I know Craig Moerer and another dealer on E Bay have them over $100 thats up to them I'm sure you can get it cheaper.I think its flip country living could be played out at open minded venues

If the criteria is cheap how about

Jimmy Lewis -"how long is a heartache supposed to last" Hotlanta

John Edwards -"Execise your love" Aware

Wee Gee-"My world seemed blue"-Cotilion

3 from lps no more than £15 each

Sisters Love - Are you lonely - probably my favourite femme slowy

Jimmy Lewis, what a record.

"Bach and Basie was my thing, but since my babys gone, all I do is play BB King"

Sisters Love, Brill. "eye to eye" is good as well.

As regards the deep and cheap theme how'bout Roshell Anderson "know what you're doing when you leave" on Sunburst/Contempo. This is a strange and haunting piece of music quite scary.

The flip is just as good but not what I would class as deep soul. Jesse Boone and the Astros "no particular one" This sounds early 60s and has a impressions groove like "gypsy woman" but a bit more uptempo. You could dance to this.

Superb double sider well worth a fiver of less.

Alan,

I'll tell you what's scary.... I was on my way into the office and thought about Roshell Anderson and that I should post it as another recommendation on this thread!!!!

I also thought of "Freddie North "Right Here Is Where We Belong" from around the same time!

The original poster who went for the Roger Hatcher in a big way will surely love these two gems.
