Butlers With Frankie Beverly Because Of My Heart C/w I Want To Feel I'm Wanted

It was always gonna be pretty hard to follow the euphoria of selling the Larry Clinton issue this week. But we think Frankie Beverly’s different take of his Fairmount 1014 trophy on the impossible to acquire Washington D.C. ROUSER label, is the perfect sequel.

Take a listen these two raw-cut versions that were abandoned by Fairmount to emerge some 150 miles south in Washington, D.C. and the legend was born.

The simple piano intro is the Green-Light for the dance-floor dash, driven by an insane saxophonist, who supports Frankie’s leathery vocal style throughout. A lush harmony chorus from The Butlers, then one of the ultimate sax breaks, horns, shrill girls…well this recording just has THE LOT!

THIS IS MATCHLESS NORTHERN SOUL.

So flip it over and you’ll be treated to a finger-popping groove that is every note as good, in fact some would say better than the usual preferred DJ side. I could run the full spectrum of superlatives, whilst reviewing these two killers but I think the soundfile will do all the talking required.

So to the label - less that 5 known copies known? may not be an exaggeration of it’s rarity!

This 45s offers Northern Soul collecting, not only at it’s most challenging, but most arousing too…spine-tingling stuff.

Effie Smith Dial That Telephone Part 1 & 2

A PERFECT copy.

As you will already know this example is one of the really scarce #’s in the series, this copy was most probably unplayed before the soundfile was lifted, the spindle hole was virgin, both labels are like new, as is the vinyl both sides.

Sue searchers, you will not find a finer copy of this Los Angeles Black novelty recording.

Court Davis Try To Think (what You're Doing) C/w The World Keeps Spinning

Herbie Williams - The Lover Who Loves You Not!

Richard Searling’s Wigan Casino Monster, the one that had the punters ripping their hair out with frustration of not knowing who it really was.

That bank of strings would reverberate around the cathedral of Northern Soul; the lone piano break signaled arms held aloft, as the sea of dancers would dreamlike spin and shuffle to down-beat NS that Wigan Casino had not witnessed before… such was Richard Searling’s ear-for-a-tune.

Today this legendary 45 still has the same effect.. but is rarely heard - sadly oldies venues are virtually devoid of real top-quality NS oldies - predictably replaced by the tried-tested-terminal-tunes.

Hopefully soon oldies DJ aspire do whole sets of the stand-out tunes of yesteryear that refresh both the memory & the soul

Wigan Casino - this spin was surely one of the greatest spins ever!

NOTE: of all the few copies we have had though our hands over the decades were pressed in “contaminated” vinyl that gives varying levels of pimpling. Some resemble a bad case of acne, a few you can hardly notice the blemishes at all - this copy is THE BEST playing surface I’ve witnessed, check out the flawless soundfile & two immaculate labels.

Also we’ve sound-clipped the flipside to showcase the 2 record only artist’s vocal power.

George Freeman Down And Out

The RARE “Gold” text 1962 press as opposed to the not so rare 1963 Silver Text press.

BEAT BALLAD HEAVEN

The New York Big City Sound served stone-cold with George’s convincing vocal descending into despair on a full orchestral arrangement. Master arranger Perry Botkin uses all his movie score potential as he constructs layer upon layer of sound. Starting with a few plucks of the violin, lazy castanets drift aside as George’s bellowing vocal takes over, then Perry mounts an a front off timely horns as the session transforms into an unstoppable force.

As 49th Street in the Manhattan generates another Brill Building masterpiece.

George went on to record a few other great soul tunes, and Botkin’s talents took him on to Movie & TV scores that includes Mork & Mindy, Happy Days and films that Jack Nicholson stared in….

The roads of life …

PS this Gold Text beauty is utterly pristine!

Winfield Parker & The Shyndells I Love You Just The Same

How time flies - This 45 is our very FIRST copy for sale in over 15 years, it only seems like yesterday when me Spanner, Butch, Eddie Paz, Rob Underwood would travel that winding 80 miles from Melton Mowbray to Cleethorpes, at the time 1977 the only serious rival Wigan Casino had for the crown of Northern Soul Central.

In those days Winfield Parker was firmly in my play list, an all powerful thumpin’ slab of Northern Soul, a dance-floor dismantler of devastating proportions, a stomper all the way from 427 Laurens Street, Baltimore, Maryland to Lincolnshire’s coastline to shake the Winter Gardens to it’s core.

Even back in the late 70s this 1965 release was darn difficult to find, today I was rather shocked to find I had no sales history on it whatsoever.

Check out this runaway-Northern-Soul-juggernaut and remember you ONLY get this tune on the incredibly rare BLUE label release # 0017. Winfield did re-cut the record for Ru-Jac 0024 a yellow label in 1967 - this version is a dull water ed down Reliant Robin of a version.. and is to be passed over.

Do not pass by this one though - when are we gonna see another?

Eddie Foster I Never Knew

No words from me can elevate this Northern Soul anthem any higher than it already sits. A timeless, enduring classic that never fails to ignite the masses to dance.

MINT is a near impossible grade for this record.

But this is an utterly flawless copy, label retains FULL depth of blue, vinyl both sides is pristine!

This s the “Title” & “matrix” numbers in deadwax variation of the ORIGINAL press.

Carolyn Crawford When Someone's Good To You C/w My Heart

Bemusingly this Detroit Songbird only released 3 45 for Motown, all of which are fabulous Northern Soul dance tunes BOTH sides. So in all this ladies brief Motown career gave us fully 6 tunes to consider.

This her only UK release and sadly the last of her 3.

This rarity is a near perfect 1964 UK press offering not only seriously elusive British Tamla Motown but also two of this under-recorded lady’s Northern Soul dancers, both sides of the highest order.

So hard to find as this 1964 Stateside release, in any condition whatsoever - so to be able to list a near perfect example is more than pleasing. Do not pass by by - we may never see a copy in this flawless state again.

Dysons Faces Original 1977 Washinton D.c. Press

WOW! What an album!

Conceived in Washington, D.C. mixed by Detroit doyen Clay McMurray. This album serves notice on what 70s should have sounded like throughout the decade until the intrusion of “disco”

Every tracks drips with soul, no matter it be upbeat or a tortured harmony ballad, top quality, an affirmation of what was possible whern all in the studio ignore outside commercial influences.

We’ve picked four tracks but we could easily have sound-filed all 8 delicious tracks.

A sample of two dance tunes & two sweet soul ballads - so listen to

  1. till I’ve got this feelin’ of love
  2. welcome to all this love again
  3. don’t worry about the jones
  4. you and me

and imagine this album at your fingertips in the record den…

Tams What Kind F Fool (do You Think I Am) C/w Laugh It Off

A gorgeous 1964 British Red & White DEMO.

This 45 The Tams first British 45 release paved the way for groups iconic HMV “Hey Girl Don’t Bother Me” that has for all-time been consider an ultimate British Soul collectors trophy.

But just like “Hey Girl” it’s predecessor “What Kind Of Fool” was created by the prolific lyricist Ray Whitely’s who skill in telling a short story to music.

Robert Parker Barefootin'

The RARE 1966 UK white and red Island press in stunning condition, we think the scans say it all.

From the streets of New Orleans to worldwide dance hit! The collaboration of Robert Parker & Wardell Quezerque crafted a dance-craze that became a huge MOD favourite and today still packs the floors at those “Twisted Wheel” rival evenings.

The single is now considered a timeless classic - but the album is a different matter. As the original USA press with the yellow label it is seldom seen, but this British 1966 Island release is ultra-difficult album to secure.

The condition of this copy is ridiculously clean, as if been filed since it’s release in 1966; hardly a blemish can be detected on vinyl, label or sleeve.

If your neurotic about condition and seek only the extremely elusive 60s SOUL LP’s this is for you!

Exits Another Sundown In Watts C/w I'm So Glad

If you cram Jimmy Conwell, Sir Hank Graham, Godoy Colbert, Gene Page and Arthur Wright into a studio you have every right to expect something very special - and thats what you get with this commercially failed 1969 Los Angeles work-out.

NORTHERN SOUL HEAVEN

We’ll let the sumptuous sound-file do all the talking as it exhibits beautiful marierd harmonies woven into a classy mid-tempo dance groove.

Sweet soul fans will also enjoy the slick flipside.

Sonia Ross Let Me Let Free C/w Every Now And Then

For lovers of the obscure Sister-Soul tunes that stir your passion and your need.

Topside is crossover delight on the highest quality highlighting a boundless vocal that expresses pain and suffering but at the same time beckons you to dance! Rare soulful dance at it’s most captivating.

*So on to the other side

The flip is a slab Deep Soul capable of tearing your heart from your chest, a young girls torment could hardly be portrayed more painfully as Sonia serves up a hand on broken-heart performance, soothed by considerate male vocal group backing.

This is without doubt my favourite Soul-Sister record of the moment.

Listen and weep…

Errol Dixon The Hoop C/w I Don't Want

Tell me a more convincing slab of 60s Dance Soul ever released as UK ONLY than this explosive nugget.

Drop the stylus and rock the house, as Errol Dixon takes the style to a new level.

This copy is utterly perfect, check the label scan for the astonishing sight of the paper shards still hanging from the machine dink of 47 years ago.

Does it get any MINTER than that!

Black Music Edition 1 - December 1973

The very first edition of this monthly rival to Blues & Soul.

December 1973 IPC Specialist Press debuted with a 56 page colour magazine, which includes Dave Godin’s debut column after leaving Blues & Soul in 1972. Plus a 3 page 15 year history of The Isley Brothers, also boasting a full colour centerfold of pose of Sly Stewart.

Black Music aim was to broadened the spectrum of Black Music collecting journalism in Britain not just covering UK & USA Soul but also Reggae, Afro and Jazz. This first edition actually outstripped Blues & Soul at the time - the wars of the British Soul magazine had begun!

This edition for obvious reasons is incredibly hard to find - as subsequent monthly releases circulation grew on the back of outstanding writings of Tony Cummings, Carl Gayle, Dave Godin, with USA contributors Bob Palmer & Vernon Gibbs in New York & Dennis Hunt in Los Angeles “Black Music” had the scene covered.

Needless to say this issue is full of Artist Pics, Biographies, USA & UK charts, fascinating record company and fashion adverts that give a unique insight into the 1973 black music culture.

an essential starting point to collect this highly informative series.
