What do people think of these as you get some on CD's made by Mastermix. It would be intresting to imagine say 6 tracks mixed in about 14 minutes as a megamix played out at some Northern soul night. I personally like them to play while at home. or doing mobile disco's and playing some for a few Northern tracks when asked

Thanks Shane, moved it.

Paul, er, yes, good luck... :P The polite version of my answer would be that I don't think this music lends itself to being mixed.

..."interesting" isn't the word that comes to mind, Paul. "Heresy" seems to fit rather better...

Technically any dance music which has a regular pattern can be mixed. Weren't you and Carms spotted at a gay northern disco in Edinburgh once? Don't tell me they did not play the B side of the Diana Ross 12" Long Hangover. You know the one with the Supremes mega mix. Of course well known northern fan Simon Soussan had a hit with a motown mix 12" Uptown Festival by Shalamar.

If Kev Roberts could mix it might be described like this

"A masterful non stop selection from DJ Kev Roberts (the original Wigan Casino DJ) that contains all the Northern Soul classics. Artists include Frank Wilson, The Topics, The Dynamics, The Metros, Eddie Foster, The Group feat. Cecil Washington, Rufus Wood, Bobby Reed, The Epsilons, The DC Blossoms, & many more. 50 incredible floorpackin' stompers & shufflers for your dancing pleasure - non stop! Bestway. 2003."

and as discussed previously Andy Smith's Northern Soul mix CD had good sales.

What would you rather hear? Some moustachioed codger muttering between records, trying to disguise cue burn or some smoothly mixed up lifting blend of non stop northern soul Heaven?

Technically, yes... doesn't mean it sounds good though. I can appreciate the skill involved in proper dance/house/funk/hip hop/etc mixing, but 'megamix' just makes me think of Jive Bunny and brings back school disco nightmares :shades:

Wasn't me... shades.gif

True.. but who to?

I'd rather just hear records, complete with their intros and endings.

Not being funny Paul, but this is a non-starter. The music doesn't need messing about with. Its fine just as it is.

I know you do this to wind up old dudes Paul and persoanlly I love the pose. But your wind up this time is not as daft as some of them are saying. Its already happended. Shalimar's first hit, was mixed by northern collector Simon Soussan, the name was taken from the Shalimars (Verve) and the music all uptempo motown etc. Its a naff idea but someone's already done it.

Keep winding us up. It makes me smile.

Anybody know if SS sought permission from Motown before doing this?

I only ask as Gordy was on record as saying that he would never allow any Motown stuff to be re-mixed. Appreciate of course Motown did re-mix there own records later.

A few words of advice. Never get chatting to a mobile DJ at a wedding & tell him that you have a passing interest in Northern.

This is what he will dedicate to you personally-

wigan's chosen few - footsie

al wilson - the snake

wigan's ovation - skiing in the snow

muriel day - nine times out of ten

wayne gibson - under my thumb

 ..... i'd go with the latter .... but the former seems much more popular here whistling.gif

so does that mean if you lot come and see me and my dad do mobile disco's or happen to be at one we do you would not ask for Northern soul thinking it's the same old DJ's giving us Wayne Gibson etc. The only ever Northern soul request we have had apart from ordinary stick some motown and soul on has been Bob Relf - Blowing My Mind To Pieces but we would cater for you die hard fans if you asked. have over 50 Northern soul CD complations so enough to use some are box sets of 3 or more CD's and doubles.

Got a tape from Tony Warrot, mainly all 4/4 beat oldies, mixed together sounds really good, you can 'mix' any thing thats 4 beats per bar,

Soussan recorded his own versions of the songs with session singers and musicians. You don't need permission to cover songs that have been released on record. However you do need permission from the publishers (Jobete also owned by Gordy) if you wish to alter the lyrics. One may argue he did alter the lyrics by dropping verses to get a medley but Motown artists always included a medley on their live albums.

well if we get told to stop playing it. Maybe we need to stick 2 decks together and play our vinyl records (many originals) some re-issues and again do we win. It seems a lot of soulies care for the original rather then a CD. I personally do collect vinyl but like the CD's so i can play when i am on computer.

Bang on. Number 3 was awful. The first one sold really well and it's a great reminder of the jive talking music lovin jock he was. Last I heard he was doing high end mobile discos in LA and syndicating an oldies radio show. Used to love his Saturday morning radio show on radio one - used to play some great soul records.

Pics of Rosko then and now.
