Guest gaz thomas Posted June 25, 2013 Share Posted June 25, 2013 boss records detroit as a collector i picked up what i thought was the three releases johnny dixon - where are you jeen and him - you aint gonna get a chance reggie alexander - its better all on the super sonic sound label 45s arranged by herbie williams, jack ashford, john allen, lorraine chandler, joe hunter, etc just hoping lorraine could add some history / insight I take it boss 101 is jean carter ? This is one obscure label I see the label later in the 60s, but I dont feel its got anything to do with original pied piper productions why boss records? three magnificent 45s ! and why just three releases ? How could I have forgotten that Frank Brown, Joe Hunter and Mike Terry were involved in that recording, and that the red pressing had "Detroit michigan"written on the label? It's only that the yellow pressing DOESN'T have "Detroit"on the label, and also looks very similar in design to the Philly label's font and layout, and also the incredible coincidence that both labels (Philly label's 2nd run only) started from 500. But, anyone knowing the time periods of both labels would know that they couldn't have run concurrently. The Philly label's #503 was issued several years before The Celebrities' Detroit release. Another item of interest is that there appears to be only a thin connection of The Celebreties' Detroit Boss Records with the Pied Piper Detroit Boss, in that both labels used Joe Hunter and Mike Terry in their recordings. But, Frank Brown seems to be the money man/executive production man in The Celebrities', and The Pied Piper people were clearly the source of the later Boss issues. Perhaps Joe Hunter and Mike Terry are links from one label to another, but I'd like to know why these two, seemingly little-related labels had the same name only 1-2 years apart. I see the Joe Hunter credit on the celebrities 45 but no sign of Herbie Williams,Johnny Allen, Lorraine Chandler or Jack Ashford. Also the Joe L 45 listed in the detriot boss list is a totally different label aswel isnt it, with no connection at all to pied piper? So I take it there is only Boss super sonic sound production 101,102,and 103 - just the 3 releases Anyone one know of any other releases on that inprint ?
