Once Upon A Time In Wigan Who Did It?

Recommended Posts

....I was listening to XFm yesterday and one of my friends rang me to say that the play I directed and produced, 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan' was being highlighted on a 'Soul' show!! The writer and two of the actors were live on air! How could this be I replied? I live in Manchester. 'Puss' (cant use his real name!ha) has my number......no one mentioned it to me! I then sat through a program where 'Puss' talked about the play as if it had suddenly appeared on stage! No mention of the fact that it was a collaboration; the use of film, the soundtrack, teaching the actors to dance, the financing and losing money, the 'soul' of it, was down to me!! forgot my giving him scores of free tickets etc, etc. :huh: I am normally very quiet and seldom speak out, BUT whistling.gif I am appalled and hurt by the fact that, when the play was on, 'Puss' knew my number well, when it came to tickets etc. Ironic that the three people he had on had never been to Wigan!! Whats going on!? Could it be he is promoting something? Has he lost my number? He had it a couple of months ago, when he asked me to teach some teenagers to dance! HE even said that if a film comes out 'motown' are up for doing the soundtrack! f*** off! He cant remember most of what was played at Wigan, because I keep hearing him play same 50 records over and over again! It was'nt all Motown mate! In fact, where the f*** were Motown when I had no money to put the play on? When I had to re-mortgage my flat in order to go into rehearsal? Get a life and create something yourself! Trying to commandere the play and excluding the 'soulboy' who put his 'life' and 'soul' into it, shows how callous and commercial, your attitude to the 'soul' scene really is!! It worked because it was 'honest' and true. I am, in fact, still paying off the debt from the last tour!.....me, no one else! Which is fine. Apart from when prats choose to forget the truth! The crowning moment was when, at the end of the show, 'Puss' invited all the actors, by name and the writer, to go and see Dean Parrish when he is on. Somehow forgot the name of the guy who gave 3 years, 'full time', of his life towards creating 'Once Upon A Time In Wigan'. I even texted the show, but as of yet, no reply! Truly disgusting! :thumbsup:

British Theatre Guide seem to know the score;

Although Mick Martin is credited as the writer, this is very much director Paul Sadot's story. He tells in the programme of his own experiences in the 1970s at "all-nighters" around the country, including Wigan, which are recreated in the play. Sadot's enthusiasm for these days and the Northern Soul scene come through very clearly in the play, the programme notes, the leaflets and the web site dedicated to the play.

Well received and appreciated. I thought it was great! ranting_1.gifranting_1.gif

For what it's worth Paul a bunch of us went to see the play twice, once in Manchester and then again in Coventry (give yourself a big pat on the back). I thought it was a great play with some really funny moments that were very true to life back in the day. I can never understand these people who ride on the back of others.......to achieve something in this life is hard enough.......give credit where it's due!

I'll say it then Russ Winstanley....there you go, contributes nothing, lived on the back of Wigan Casino for the past 23 years, has sod all in common with me or most on the scene, 'Richard' was the Casino enough said!!!!......this stinks Paul i know how much commitment, love and dedication you put in with the play this is a sad reflection of a little man's inflated ego constantly milking and taking credit for everything connected with that eight year period, your play caputured the time perfectly and did not look through rose tinted glasses at the subject as certain books have done in the past, credit where credit is due mate i say, oh and if any consellation everyone knows it was your baby, talent and hard work that produced a wondeful insight in social history, do we care what he thinks,says or does no indeed we don't..........oh and i think you will find the Frank Wilson played at Wigan was infact owned by Les McCutchen, see what i mean rose tinted glasses, say it enough and they actually believe it's true.

Regards - Mark Bicknell.

You must be fuming, someone else claiming the glory for all your hard work.

I am sure the person falsely claiming the credit will get their come uppence!

Saw the play in 2004 in Southampton, and thought it was fantastic and the memories came flooding back. In 2005 I saw it again in Portsmouth, and it was even better. Who would have thought that a play can bring back so many memories. Oh and Russ, just a fat c*nt sad.gif IMHO of course :yes:

I saw it in Coventry Paul and it was superb, especially the dancers. If you had a hand in teaching the Coventry actors then well done mate, they could have been on the scene for years. sad.gif
