And this was the first record I heard at Wigan casino coming through the doors in 1976 as a skinny 13 year old youth it was atmospheric

To say the least and set the bar in my obsession

With Soul music which seems to have got stronger the older Ive become

Archie Bell and the Drells-"Here I go again"

A song that hit me as Disco, and probably the first 'new/current' tune I remember hearing at the casino, probably because I've always loved it! There were probably other current releases played that I don't remember (and I'm talking around 1975 here, not the last couple of years), in fact I know there were, but this has always hit the right spot for me, and was the second single after her version of the Foundations cover 'Baby now that I've found you' which did nothing at all sales wise. Nothing that came after my choice even came close to the kind of quality, or the 'classic' status which this song enjoyed (Although 'House of Joy' with Junior Vasquez from 1997 is still one of my favourite house tunes).

It was A top 20 hit in a few countries, though it took a cover version by Emilio Esteves's wife in 1994 for the song to chart in the UK, this is undoubtedly one of THE disco records that helped define an era, and something that will forever be in my record box.....

Dave, Pete S will verify this, we had this on one of the first Wigan Tapes I ever had, think it was late 75/early 76 along with Yvonne Baker - You Didn't Say A Word, which is the other track from that tape that's always stuck in my head.

Actual release of TTBA was March 1976 over here I think, US promo copies around on 12" from about October 75.

:hatsoff2: HI YES YOU ARE RIGHT, HOWEVER IN 1969 A 12" TAMLA RECORDING OF "I HEARD IT THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE" EXISTS, IT MUST BE THE FIRST 12" SOUL SINGLE? :g: DAVE K

Think this was one of the first commercial 12" releases in the UK, or at least the first from a major label (Warner Bros/Whitfield - along with Daddy Cool by Boney M on Atlantic if memories of Sundown records in Wolvo serve me..)

Again late 75/early 76

Another tune that I thought was great at the time, and still do (although at over 11 minutes, the 12" does go on a bit!), although I believe it's the other side that''s been played out in recent years.

Sticking with the mid 70s and the theme of 'a lookback over the last 40 years' today with a tune that was tailor made for the modern soul/disco market, and because of that (and the fact it was written/produced by Ian Levine & Danny Leake), is one of a few records that are ignored/forgotten by todays DJs.

I love most of the songs by this lady, and couldnt quite make up my mind which of the early tracks to post, but this just edged out "24 Hours a Day", mainly because I think I posted that a couple of threads ago!

I remember talking to Pete Waterman about the first UK release 12" and he swears it was Silver Convention  - Fly Robin Fly although the first 12" area is so contentious I'm not getting involved.

Re the Torch

Took me 39 of those 40 years to get an original copy of Love is a good foundation.Somehow its never been held in the same regard as other classics of the period. During 1972-73 Tina and I were looking to buy a house in Tunstall, I was gutted when the Torch burned down, less than a mile away from where we ended up living.Ironic that we had spent the previous five years busing the 5 miles from where we lived to enjoy many nights at the club.Prior to that the local paper. the Stoke based Evening Sentinel and local residents had run a vicious campaign to get the place closed. Due respect to the late John O'Brien who worked there from the early days and with the support of Mary Fox (then of Radio Stoke), was successful in getting a plaque fixed at Hose Street, commemorating, the site.

Hard to imagine now, but the Major Lance recording night was the first place I heard "sliced tomatoes" and this "disco" classic ( believe me the place was rocking to it):Trammps Hold back the night:

can relate to the Torch story, but i would say the summer of´76 was the pinnacle of this "new" scene? and the place to be..............Torquay :D:yes:  there is even a topic about it somewhere and probably the most summery record was Tommy Hunt-Loving on the losing side! on juke boxes all over the town

I'm a bit older but there was always an 'in' UK seaside resort each year.

In 1966 (for us Northern mods) it was Yarmouth (no idea why though). But that was the year I was doing my O Levels (+ the World Cup was on), so I never really got any further than Cleethorpes on my Lambretta. 1967 was going to be different for our bunch though, so in Jan 67 we booked a week in Yarmouth in late July / early August. GREAT, we were gonna live it large that summer. TROUBLE WAS, the in place in summer 67 was Newquay and we were stuck in Yarmouth. Weather was OK but the local music venues (Tower Ballroom, etc) were far from 'cutting edge'. We were pissed off but met a few lasses from Norwich on the first weekend in Yarmouth. They told us that Norwich had a good soul club (Disc ?) and a fine cafe (Jaquard) so we spent the week over there. Headed home on the Saturday and got our 'soul fix' at the Mojo on the Sunday (went with Pat Mercer from Hull)  -- Garnett Mimms on live.

Seem to recall Felice Taylor songs being big in UK soul clubs that summer. It was probably "I'm Under The Influence of Love" that we spent weeks dancing to BUT here I'll go for the follow-up 45 track (& big UK pop chart hit) ........

. "I Feel Love Coming On" which I'll dedicate to ex Hull mate Pat(rick) Mercer who is really ill at the moment ..........
