Gene Townsel Time Wounds All Heels

1987 Californian master-class in Soul.

Includes the two killer Soulful Dance tracks; I’m Walking Away & There’s No Use Hiding. Plus a mountain of gut churning ballads to take you to place where soul dreams are made.

Conceived in 1987 in California, this project proves that sad passing of real soul being made was not universal - the album was proof that the style and the emotion was still alive in some musicians.

To quote Gene Townsel himself: “For Out Of Love came pain; Out Of Pain came Music…and out of music came me”

This copy is flawless and still retains 95% of it’s original shrink wrap.

Sonny Craver I'm No Fool C/w I Wanna Thank You

Leonard Jewel Smith’s Teri De Records runs a very close 2nd. to SHRINE as being the most beloved and wanted of all the street-level Soul labels of the 60s.

So when an utterly sublime example comes to market we’ve just got auction this elusive 45. Offering not one but two fine examples of LJS’s ear for the soul-dance tune. Mr. Smith teams up with Ex-Pharaohs member Godoy Colbert and the Teri De gathering yet again serve up special Northern Soul.

Topside is slick Northern Soul classic style dancer, whilst the ahead-of-it’s-time flipside carries a slightly softer approach, giving up smooth Northern Soul crossover that ticks all the boxes.

A rare double helping of NS in just impeccable condition.

Pic & Bill All I Want Is You C/w It's Not You

Seeking perfect whilst hunting down those British Soul release 45’s, well this is as close as you can get, without traveling in a time machine back to 1967. Then you may find it rather tricky to fins a record shop that actually ordered it in.

So click the sound file to enjoy Texas’s answer to Sam & Dave, as Major Bill Smith guides the pair through moving Deep Soul on which the duo duel for the most-excruciatingly sorrowful vocal. This is Deep Soul at it finest..

Flip it over for a raucous Northern Soul FUNK infused mid-tempo dancer, that back in the early just wasn’t “Motowny” enough for the dancefloor but today is perfect!

So hard to acquire on British release and in 1967 condition, complete with it’s original birth sleeve, which I personally find riveting.

Luther Ingram Ain't That Nice C/w You Never Miss Your Water

A Northern Soul Detroit sleeper that has snoozed for a little too long.

The know-how of the Bobalou Boys again craft mighty fine Northern Soul with the guy they would later cut “If It’s All The Same To You Babe” with. Bob Bateman using his roots by utilizing all the Detroit influences of 1965, incorporating a shrill soul-sister group chorus, male group vocals joining the party, the prerequisite of the lengthy Motor City sax break; all the ingredients are there for Detroitesque Northern Soul dancer, that so far has received little or no NS DJ attention.

We think it is drench in quality, charm & potential to rise up and become a most-wanted tune. Take a listen, and prepare to be impressed.

But do not overlook the Sam Cooke styled flipside, a mid-tempo with cool easy flowing class.

Condition of this PROMO copy could not be finer.

Justin Jones Dance By Yourself C/w Love (your Magic Spell Is Ever)

Very RARE 1961 UK press.

Justin’s USA original issue on the “Flippin’” label is consider a Northern Soul R&B trophy, on this ridiculously elusive UK press it is serious British collectors piece, we all missed back in those formative years.

Condition of vinyl only reveals a couple of light, insignificant surface blemishes. Both labels are clean and flaw free.

When it comes to collecting British, backtracking on the ones we all missed is regrettably a very trying task.

Do not pass by, this 45 only rarely comes to market.

PS We forgot to mention the “Popcorn” beauty on the flipside

Bill Bush I'm Waiting

Simple sax is genius, 3 notes signal a Wildebeest style migration to the dancefloor, as top DJ’s are assured reaction when the the needle dropped on this instantly irresistible dancer.

A huge floor packing Monster for the NS DJ master-of-ceremonies Ginger Taylor who championed this 1968 Northern Soul accident sitting on a flipside that sold nothing. Now quite easily the rarest 45 on this soul-rich label.

A recording with the rare quality of, no matter how many times you hear, it still burrows under the skin to stay in your head for hours.

This copy is flawless in every way!

Wooden Nickels Nobody But You C/w More Than A Friend

Cousins Chester & Gary Pipkin are names on a label is synonymous with classic style Northern Soul of the highest calibre, this late summer 1966 Los Angeles session is no exception.

A Wigan Casino classic spin that amazingly escaped the dubious honor of being bootlegged at the time; with the following decades adding layer after layer to it’s reputation of a tune you can drop the needle on anytime any place and gets heads and feet turning.

This tune gives you a drop of the proper stuff. REAL-DEAL-NORTHERN SOUL that stomps from start to finish a wave of male vocal group backing, relentless driving bassline rhythm attacked by a searing Soul-Sister vocal…and a instrumental break to die-for.

So very Motown - but better! But do not passed by the dreamy harmony ballad on the flip.

This PROMO copy is in irreproachable condition..

Pat Powdrill And The Powerdrills Together Forever C/w They Are The Lonely

A head-turning gorgeous RED VINYL promo.

Barry White’s in-house Downey Records composition is given the Nick Risi treatment sparking off a pumping sister-vocal Northern Soul dancer. This lady consistently injects real-life into all her recordings, in fact everything Pat released is record to check out, whether it be on this icon California label or her recordings for Reprise, Miss Powdrill sure knows how to shake it down.

This copy for the “trainspotter” carries extra appeal not just for the beautiful coloured vinyl but also for the authentic DOWNEY RECORD PRODUCTION addressed sticker with telephone numbers included.

Provenance could not be more solid.

Reflections Like Adam And Eve

This weeks contender for the “Black Is Beautiful” trophy is a pristine copy of this Northern Soul anthem.

So rarely witnessed as the colourful ABC Paramount STOCK copy and this example is like new!

I do vividly remember the first time I heard this New York produced powerhouse dance tune, in The Highland Room Blackpool circa 1973. Whether it was Ian Levine or Colin Curtis that played it, it was one of the “Stand-out” sounds of the evening, along with Linda Jones - Just Can’t Live My Life and Dave Love’s Colalined Baby - those 3 stuck with me all the way home and long into decades to come.

This tune is obviously more associated with Wigan Casino a perfectly fashioned frantic proper-style Northern Soul that was the touch-paper for acrobatics on the floor.

40n years on, today, the pioneers of dance will be more excited by that most-alluring sleeve, label scan and the perfect condition that lies beneath.
