I think the problem with the current 'new breed' of pseudo r&b is that it just isn't very good, and anyone who thinks it is seems to be kidding themselves and rather sadly have a case of emperorsnewclothesitis.

All the good r&b /early soul records have been plundered, played and danced to.  It's a redundant form and sadly a large slice of it can now be filed under Jim Reeves.

Ps I didn't know mods liked music, I thought it was all clobber and pout..... :g:

Its stuff like the passionate hatred of rhythm & blues, on a soul website, that makes the british look fucking ridiculous. Our scenes deserve to be the embarassment that they are

Show me where Reg demonstrated her "passion" and "hatred" and your post may have some semblance of meaning.

I think you are getting all flustered because someone has a contrary opinion to your own.

Richard, whilst your post to defend your wife is admirable, the majority of its context is confusing to say the least.

I'm not aware that you have attended any R&B events for a good few years, so how can you claim to be the voice of reason on what is good, bad or indifferent out of any new discoveries?

When did I say I hated R&B? Did you read what I said?

To be accused of not liking black music based on what I said in a light hearted way about a rock and roll record is rather extreme.

Sorry about that, my post wasnt particularly a response to yours, didnt intend to quote you, or to be so grumpy

.I always let this bother me, but sometimes I cant tell if people mean that they dont want to hear r&b at a northern do, which is fine, or if people mean that they dont like it at all, which is outrageous. Or at least it's outrageous to boast such a thing.

Also - r&b / rock & roll - same thing. If you only like the later style of r&b, fair enough, but it doesnt make earlier stuff some different genre

Is RnB Northernsoul?

Before I begin I want to say that I am not a tough guy, ok I know Kung Fu and shit but I am more of a lover than a fighter, just wanted to get that out of the way before I tell of what actually went down at Stoke last Saturday Night. As per normal I'm in the Windsor Suite throwing my shapes and some gorilla comes and taps me on the shoulder, “The Boss wants to talk to you”, I think Kev Roberts has found out about me and Soul Sam writing all that stuff on the toilet wall about Kev and Richard Searling but that was ages ago and Sam would never grass us up, I then start thinking that he now knows that it was me who used to flood the toilets every week at Wigan when I was an apprentice Plumber and used to see how many bog rolls I could force down and shit. I was kinda like frog marched but we ...pass Kev and I am ushered into a private room that leads upstairs to a rabbit warren of corridors and side rooms, it's dark and dingey and I’m not so much as scared but worried that I'm gonna get bummed or summit. A door opens and a massive man is sat smoking a cigar, he hands me a CD and tells me to “Enjoy” as I'm escorted back as quickly as I arrived I get time to study the CD. The CD says “The Devil's Music for Simon” and there are instructions to listen to it in the car on the way back to South Yorkshire.

We all finished the Nighter and I fired the Jaguar up and slipped in the CD, it was …........ RnB, it felt as uncomfortable as my first cavity search on my cross Turkey train journey where I discovered the cold knuckle of bureaucracy, I listened intently and as much as it pains me to say it, I loved it. I am disgusting.

The bit about all the good stuff being found already could be said about all genres of old black music. When is this era of new breed pseudo r&b you refer to? Give us an example of a 'current new breed of pseudo r&b that isnt very good' record, I dont know what sort of thing you're meaning.

I agree that a lot of it has been found, I think the best stuff was found in the decade starting late 90s

I have always thought "Baby You Got It"  - Maurice and the Radiants to be Nothern Soul.  It has been played now and again at Northern venues for many decades.

Northern Soul contains a lot of different musical styles, thats one of the things that make it interesting.

If you are into Northern you will know which R/B tunes work on the dance floor!

...i like something in most genres i hear and think the genre  labels are becoming out of date, maybe unneccessary in the fast changing scene the youngsters from all over europe and the world it seems  are creating.......to me its   " music originated from or inspired mainly but not exclusively by 20th century american culture "...............atb.ez

..once upon a time..northern soul was reasonably well defined..almost impossible now..to answer the original post..R&B was blues with rhythm..obviously..the next step up from the blues, bridging the gap between soul. The early rare soul clubs like the wheel ,played John Lee hooker & Bo Diddley (& others) R&B tunes so yes it could be Northern soul.Fast forward 30 odd years and more obscure R&B is now being played as Northern Soul..there will always be a crossover area as one music type starts to begin another phase..but for me, generally R&B is not northern Soul, some great tracks..for sure..but not really northern soul..then of course theres Tommy Bush 'i dont like it' which i always thought was a bit R&B..which i class as northern and the Ray Agee monster..thats as simple as i can make it..

...I agree entirely with your findings SheffSoul regarding Tommy Bush etc.....but my 'Northern' I was introduced too back in 1975....around 100 records gathered by a keen follower of the music albeit him being 14/15 at the time and only attending 'youth clubs' for inspiration! They included stuff such as Instrumentals...Joe 90.....to Bari Track....and James Bounty too Jimmy James....Cashing In....to selling out with 70's pop tunes and loads of blue eyed soul thrown in! ALL...was considered 'Northern'....and to date nobody has said different really.....even if said embarrassingly!x But through the years...I met HARD CORE Soulies who 'know' what Northern is and speak up based on their collections etc.....but....in the same breath they'll say...instrumentals ain;t Northern...or even 'Soul'...! Then there are others who don;t go beyond the 60's....or never dip into the 60's!!x

'Northern' incorporates ALL...for me....and the Tommy Bush...Ray Agee 'sound' is always gonna be Northern to me too....whenever or however it is discovered!x A tune...is a tune....and if it ain;t Northern......me body...and head....says so....'naturally'....and I leave DJ's to stimulate those senses...or not!x

ha ha no worries, the 100club at the time was great and exciting, i think alot of us were at our peak and finding quality records and of course replaying underplayed tunes as well. yes people with anything you will find DJ's playing watered down versions of styles, this always drove me mad with ska and reggae. you want that full bodied sound and then some knob comes along and starts playing water down piss version of some bird howling in her back garden over a washboard lol. keep true to the real deal i say and keep your standards high.  Sooty mate i'm a football coach at QPR so football is all round me 24/7 ,  everyones tastes is individual to themselves, thats what makes our scene so special and different.......variety is the spice of life haha.  Greg

Myself and Greg and Catford Chris have been involved on the Mod scene since the early 80s

We have our own clubs and allnighters in London and have done so since the 80s

The Sounds played are a mixture of Black American music from the 50s to the 70s

Rare Soul RnB Latin Funky Soul Dancefloor Jazz and Jamaican stuff as well

As i said before we have a Black Music Mod scene with a devoted crowd who love their Sounds

and dig deep to find them.

I used to go all over the place for a night out years ago,

Now I just collect records.

I will be in Leeds next week to see Guy Hennegan spin

But that is a treat

And a rare chance to meet up with some special people I dont get to see very often

RnB, Popcorn, NY 60s Latin, Jamaican 60s, 60s Soul, etc

Its just my taste in music

It always will be.

i dont need a scene to know this.

when you stop being a part of a scene, and you are left to your own devices a few things can happen with music.

Firstly your own taste kicks in.

And thankfully not being part of any scene I can enjoy my own taste without influence.

I can indulge myself in my own taste.

I am like a musical butterfly, concentrating on soul and boogaloo for a few months, then RnB, then back to soul and on to ska and boogaloo again.

When I feel like it I might buy a few 60s soul classics or rarities

Its all down to me, Its my collection.

The problem of early rnb rockers to 70s crossover played in the same place is lost on me

I personally love vintage music. It will never be made like this again, We were lucky to be able to pick the bits up and appreciate in my oppinion

if it is played together in a club in the right contex, quality vintage music being so special, why not  ?

All that would be required are open minds and music fans.

I am going to keep on collecting what I like anyway

Alan Handscome is right about the Mod scene in my oppinion.

The one thing it had and i know it still does is when it comes to vintage music they will always find new things

To the future and beyond !

Don't want to sound rude but that does not work for me and am sure Lavern Baker would be turning in her grave if she heard it.

FANTASTIC Brav.....an 'opinion'...which I appreciate whatever that may be!x It's a 'pop' record for the masses....which The Searchers went out with after Lavern!x In context....the majority of 'pop' moguls out there 'luv it'...! The London mod/soul mafia......ave it! you won't find that in any book eh Al ;-)

And some of the most friendly guys on the London soul scene too.

Boring story but hey.

When I got back into going to soul do's I was on a  bus home from islington and as we passed Finsbury Park, I saw Jim and Liam heading into a cafe/club. So i hopped off the bus and walked over. The door was shut so I knocked and Rob Bailey answered. He looked at this fella with hair past his shoulders. A Wonder Stuff sweatshirt on, tye dyed long pants, and doc martin boots.

Rob says - sorry mate its a private party.

I said sorry I thought it was  a Northern Soul night.

He loked me up and down long and slow and says - Go in there, and if you can dance Northern Soul style you can stop in for free. I think he may have winked at the fella on the door with him.

In the room Catford Chris was playing the Tangeers - Let your heart and soul be free. So i popped onto the dance floor and turned to see what the fellas on the door were doing.

Gobsmacked was the only word.

the song finished and i went over and said - all right mate? Although I do feel a tad under dressed. He just laughed and bought me a can of Red Stripe.

That night I met Kerry Foster, Rob Messem and they introduced me to Jim and Liam. I had a fantastic night, and those guys have been great friends ever since. Jim RIP.

Yes agree - one criteria might be if you can envisage someone being able to jive to the beat of the record then don't play it at a Soul venue - not saying that makes something a bad record just not really in keeping with the Soul scene. I've heard some fantastic Soul/R&B records that deservedly get plays.

Spot on Manus, particularly the "being able to jive to" part - my personal criteria exactly!

Can never forget an "old soul" venue in Northants (The George, at Wilby), prior to the Northern Soul tag I was going there and listening to the likes of the Invitations, Major Lance, Superlatives,Poets, Jackie Lee, etc, etc. The venue had been frequented by my cousin a few years earlier ('66/'67?). When she found out I was going she said "Oh, you like R&B then?". "Is Gibby Dj'in there? Does little Gilly still go?"

There you go, same dj's, same crowd, same core music, different titles - R&B / Old Soul / Northern Soul.  I guess it's evolution.

Personally I think Ady Croasdell has it right with "Rhythm and Soul"

Investing/supporting/promoting the 'youth' has been a part of me life always Brav!x As a kid I always confronted bully's of those vulnerable at the 27 schools I went too.....stepped in when folk were intimidating others....and brought to account all kinds of wrong things done against 'youth' including assist over 400 receive compensation for abuse of all kinds done to them whilst in the care of Social Services as kids around the land........so to help them musically is a joy....and for me...a welcome relief to be honest!x

However.....this particular singer....as with all out tracks....will be 'replaced' by the Commercial world with an established 'star' once in the Public domain. That discussion has already taken place and it is where we secured the right to use the tunes with original singers as a 'rare' version...and are putting the 4 Northern influenced tracks on the forthcoming DVD for 'free' to pay our respects to you folk who inspired us in the first place!x We are having 500 ONLY Demo's/Samples of each double A vinyl single with 2 tracks on each manufactured too...the 'originals'.....and sticking to me...underdog....'underground' roots and philosophy as such!x Hence the delay in the 'package' arriving!!x No problem....soon be Xmas!!!!x

That was that...we never saw each other again.....but....a year later....he comes up with 14 tracks and a NEW man....never heard of Northern in his life apart from The Snake and his ex liked The Night...!x 5 of the tracks are sampled from Northern stuff....some are pop....some Drum bn Base...some just bouncy tunes that will chart anyday!!x So we have currently 15 'proper' tracks all on an album which music moguls are scrapping over out there.....whilst me and him enjoy our 'original' music with you all!!x The DVD Penny is a documentary I made 10 years ago 'off the wall' turning up at Kings Hall unannounced and spoke to....erm...everyone really!!! Put it on VHS...1000 copy's went out via Kev/Richard....and 10 years later i've decided to put it out there for 'the masses' who perhaps never knew it existed!x The topics discussed in the DVD are stuff you'll find everyday in here.....'timeless' product....and done with no script or 'agenda'....just me...wanting to capture for meself....'the scene'...!x

I have been asked to add to the post above to Brav.....the profits of the DVD are going to 3 Football Fan Trusts of local to me Non-League Clubs. I have relationships with all and any monies they get I will ensure is used for 'kids' stuff at all 3 clubs. The proceeds from the Vinyl will go to Charity Soul....an organisation set up within the Soul Scene of which I have taken a keen interest in. At present it is focusing on funding Stem Cell research for Cancer. I have got involved happily and the concept is being taken to a new level and will become a National phenomenon and encompasses all Soulies/Promoters and DJ's who want to get involved. So...the 'Youth'...cancer research...and the scene....will benefit from our product. Pete will make dosh with the Commercial world...and is 'away' again as he was in the 90's....super!x Me....never ever have I wanted to make money outta this scene...or its folk. Never have....and i'm  consistent with that ethos today.....X

Edit.....Pete read this and said 'stick it out theeeeeere'.....! Music.....good music....needs to be shared....here's our approach and opinion on that  and our intro to the album....!x 3 Northern based tracks are on the DVD and this as a 'bonus'.....and as the title of the thread is about R n B....I think this may juuuust scrape that genre.....definately tappable......and the words.....well.....Simon Cowell's email said it all when we sent him it....'Bang on!'....as he smoked another fag.......sigh.......
