Is There A Thread About Great Uptempo Gospel Records?

Hi I'm starting to get interested in finding great uptempo gospel records that don't bang on about God or Jesus too much. Heard Salem Travelers "Wade In The Water" earlier this year and absolutely loved it. Is there a thread about these kind of records? Or recommendations? Thank you!

I'd have a listen to Greg Belson's amazing 'Divine Chord' shows on his Mixcloud page - everyone else does!

A great mid tempo one  The Salem Travellers  Give Me Liberty Or Death

And one I got slagged off for playing back in 1969 at some allniter

And one Steve mentioned before absolute brilliance not really gospel though

I can never understand the bug bear of having a problem with the lyrics though. Listen to the amazing music and some of the most heart wrenching, mind blowing vocal performances you're ever likely to hear.....if you let the subject matter (which in essence is usually a positive message or a socio-conscious document of the artists surroundings, much like any secular r&b or soul artist) get in the way of discovering these tunes, then you might just be missing out.

Here's a few more though;

I agree Greg. I'm an atheist but it doesn't bother me that they are singing about God. I even find myself watching Shirley Caesar's sermons on Youtube! :lol:

It's just great music. :thumbsup:

I've never heard much Gospel Greg...in fact i've heard more on here via yourself and such than I ever have!x I like the vibe...!x My favourite 'Gospel' is still Oh Happy Day'....and it still makes me arms tingle when the choir 'give it some at the end'!x Can I ask you a personal question tho'?!x Do you believe in God as well as being passionate about the music? Are the 2 connected as such? Do you play Gospel as you feel it's summink to do with a calling.....or because you like the music anyway?x There are messages in it all....and I listen to the lyrics of all tunes!x I like your style....whatever it is based on!x I have a good friend who gave me a CD with some tunes on that they sing/dance too at Christian Camp week-ends...all uplifting 'soulful' stuff....'modern'...but it's .massive' among his Worldwide congregation he belongs too...they sell millions of copy's and stuff!! So...from a DJ perspective...and as a Soulie loving me music...I am genuinly interested as to what is behind your music...for you!x Nice 1 mate....X

Hello mate and cheers for the question. I'm not a religious person in the slightest......I do believe in the right to personal choice though so if religion is a major part of an individuals life, then I respect that......all I ask is to respect my choices too. I decided to explore the gospel path years ago, when the music and performances really spoke to me.....not the message. It would be wrong to be judgmental about the lyrical content, and miss out on such wonderful, heart felt and emotional performances.....and as I started to discover and scratch the surface of this genre, I realised just how vast it really is.

This music deserves to be documented and it's the catalyst for so many secular soul & r&b tunes we all know and love. So for me, the discovery is part of the thrill, the documentation of often recordings so small in distribution, they'd only be available for one Sunday at the local church. There's so much to uncover from my era of choice which is circa '64 to circa '84, and every day there's something fresh and exciting to listen to!
