Is it true that when she recorded this, the sound engineer had just dumped her and by the time she finished singing, everyone in the studio was in tears-apart from the b*st*rd sound engineer?

can somebody (Sean Hampsey, Tony Rounce, are you there???) please answer this query & end my uncertainty....I would be most grateful

I'm afraid it's pure urban myth, hon' - as confirmed to me by Bettye herself some years ago.

There was also the rumour that the songwriter 'Wreich Holloway' had committed suicide shortly after writing it, but that's not true either. "Wreich", BTW, is the real name of Dee Dee Ford - who died from a brain tumour, some years after writing LMDE - of Don Gardner and Dee Dee Ford fame (DG produced the track, of course...)

Always happy to help a damsel in distress...

Aw shame-another bubble burst! I've never been referred to as a DinD before, though!

It makes me think of a slender young slip of a thing waving her hanky about-I can hear the laughter echoing through the nation as I type. :P

thanks anyway Tone

One of the pleasures of Soul has to be the female sigers. Here is my nomination for one of the very finest: Doris Allen 'A Shell of A Woman'.

Should have added Gladys Knight to my previous list, having heard her singing live on Saturday she must surely be rated as one of the BEST female soul singers ever, don't miss the opportunity to see her in the UK, the voice is amazing, what a legend

Hi

I've always liked Big Maybelle;

96 TEARS

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybelle_-_96_Tears.ram

BLACK IS BLACK

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybell...s_Black.ram

She even takes a well known record and stamps her style on it, or else......... ( BRILLIANT ).

I just want to listen, because she puts her raw, gutsy vocals down - One Awesome Lady

She can do no wrong

I CAN'T WAIT ANY LONGER

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybell...t_No_Longer.ram

QUITTIN' TIME

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybell...n'_Time.ram

YESTERDAY'S KISSES

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybell...days_Kisses.ram

DOING TO ME

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybell...Doing_To_Me.ram

LET ME GO

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybelle_-_Let_Me_Go.ram

BAD TROUBLE

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Big_Maybell...Bad_Trouble.ram

I've got 96 Tears on a DEMO and I Just can't Wait Any Longer / Quittin' Time on an issue

STILL collecting as we speak.

And

Betty Lavette - Let Me Down Easy - GOOD CALL, another natural talent

Link it to a Commercial, or film and it would chart, no problem, in my opinion.

I have recently seen her perform this on a Northern DVD. - AN INCREDIBLE PERFORMANCE from one Incredible Lady

I could just imagine her on TOTP Signing off, for the #th WEEK At Number One - BRILLIANT

LET ME DOWN EASY

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Betty_Lavet...e_Down_Easy.ram

AND not forgetting;

I'M HOLDING ON

https://www.soulclub.org/stream/Betty_Lavet..._Holding_On.ram

got to agree with you on them two. big maybelles o lord what are you doing to me makes the hair on my back stand up when i hear it truly great .

Yeah good shout. Think this was in the 'Look at your box' forgotten oldie thread the other day.

You can tell me why she (quite clearly) sings "such a tit-head" right at the end of the song?

LOL "such a tit-head" does sound like good lyrics to me but i will have to be "so contented" that my copy must be different to yours, good shout though :wicked:

anyone heard aretha singing 'tracks of my tears'.

Talkin of tracks of my tears, a few years back i caught Edwin Starr doing a Motown tribute night with Martha Reeves and Freda Payne, at Birmingham, towards the end of Edwins set he did a deathly slow version unacompanied by the band which was just unbelievable, the raw emotion and feeling he put into it left me breathless and almost im tears, that fella could really sing.

Erma Franklin - Don't Wait Too Long

Etta James - Seven Day Fool
