An Antidote To Handbags

Recommended Posts

objective and subjective truth and all that ... but the venue in question is not how it was discribed from not only my experience but the experience of my friends and fellow nighter goers

I suppose everyone's experience is different - I've loved it whenever I've gone there, haven't been for ages but I guess other people may dislike what we actually like - if you see what I mean.  It's like when people always say Wigan was a dump - it was like a palace to me!

Once again a person expresses an opinion and is lambasted by all concerned. If you can't take constructive critisism you shouldn't be promoting, it rather comes with the territory.

It's not personal f.f.s. we are all older and hopefully wiser, and we should be getting some sort of proffessionalism from our top allnighters these days. If you expect people to travel long distances and pay good money, then you should try and give them what they want.

That's the point I have been trying to make. People daren't express their opinions on this scene for fear of upsetting the status quo. What you lot are saying is, this is how it's always been, so it must be perfect, and if you don't like it you can f-off.

Well thats just what a bloody lot folk have done. In fact I think 75% of the best people that used to come to my promotions are no longer on the scene. And I don't blame them.

I didn't see much constructive about it, could you point out the constructive bits please. My beef was that the club is not as described by the poster. I'm sure the clentele of the 100 Club has changed, over 34 years it always did do but we've come through a sticky patch and are having a great year so I think I am allowed to reply to the negative criticisms of someone who doesn't go any more

I don't go anywhere near as often as I used to, but that's not because I don't enjoy it anymore, or it's changed, or any other reason than the logistics of a long distance relationship where we only see each other at weekends

When I do get there, it's as good as ever, the music is top notch, the dancefloor is full irregardless of the lumps and bumps in it. The 'Foreign Mods' tend to buy records, so I quite like having a lot of them there as well.

As Ady says there was a sticky patch a couple of years ago when attendances were well down, however, whenever I've been this year, numbers are well up, and it's the right sort of people.

Ha ha I've just clicked on ffairfach soul club link !! Best venue photos ever !!!

I will be that smack head lookalike hogging the potholes with trainers on and can't wait to annoy all them hardcore soul people cos its the best underground nighter on the planet and all its little cranky bits and bobs make it so special.....

If it was perfect it wouldn't be the 100 club, but the music is always pretty damn perfect and that's what I'm going for oh and to chat to some other undesirables that vacate there too :-)

Viva le 100 .....

What started as a rallying cry was spoiled ...for what reason.? This  thread wasn't  a debate about how good /bad the 100 club is.

If Ady wanted opinions he would have asked for them.Like he did when the 100 club dipped.

........ as for the dancefloor its one of the things that makes this fantastic Allnighter unique...I dance me funky fat ass off down there & have done since the 8ts, I have NEVER ever, found the dance floor a problem.... this club will go down in history as one of THE best ever...

I always took the view, which I have always generously shared with anyone who whines about the 100 Club floor, that if it has been good enough for the likes of Keb Darge, Soulie, etc etc, then it's good enough for anybody.

Of course you are allowed to reply to criticism that's the point. This is a forum for discussion of opinions isn't it? I was just defending the guys right to air his opinion. You started a thread to promote your night in all about the soul, which to me seems like an unfair advantage over all the other promoters who wouldn't be aloud to do so. All of the posters except one were extolling your event as the muts nuts. I can't see how one comment out of all the other posts will be detrimental Ady.

I also don't think that answering the guys post by name calling does you any favours. After all, this guy used to be a regular at the 100.

Also, if you are enjoying a renaissance, why the need to start the post in the first place?

I have no axe to grind Ady, and I congratulate you on turning it around again. My promoting days are long gone thank God. I know just how hard it is, and I would never do it again.

You are indeed entitled to your opinion and so is Frankie Crocker, and you both make some valid points - of course constructive criticism should be heard on any level.

What I would say is that in any level of club promotion (online and offline) people have their own agendas, and to pretend that you are the voice of unbiased reason 'telling it like it is' is not entirely true. You and a few of your pals on here have a clear agenda to sell your own involvement and legacy on the scene as perhaps more than it is or was. For example everytime you post you mention yourself or your club night - which of course you have the right to do - but ulimately it undermines any valid point you make, as every comment ends up looking like just another antagonising post to serve your own purpose. That's just my constructive criticism of the situation as I see it unfolding in this (and many other) threads on this website.

You are right, I didn't even realise that I was doing that, and I hate it when others do it. I am actually embarrassed that I have done that. But in mitigation, we can only express the things we have experienced, but yes, I apologies for that.

I don't actually have an agenda at all. My promoting days are long gone and I haven't been out on the scene for years. I am opinionated though, and can't resist joining in. Just because you like someone, doesn't mean you agree with all their opinions. But on this scene people take that as a personal insult, when that's not the case.

For what it's worth (a bit of feed back for you) I've just re-read Ady's opening post and I am confident that he started this thread with genuine discussion interests at heart. If he didn't mention The 100 Club on the back of the subject he wouldn't be a very good promoter,The 100 Club is 'the' place to mention on the subject.

.....Had it of been me - Guilty as charged your honour :excl: ......That's 'promoting', and why it's called 'promoting'.......and I'm sure Mike would have seen straight through my feeble attempt to promote my event........

......See you on 16th November at 'Len's Den'

All the best,

Len  (of 'The Den')

No not at all I'm just a punter driving 300 miles to support a nighter that hits the spot for me musically and sociably run by a top fella for the right reasons ;-)

Also I posted this to keep in line with the thread as its not just about the 100 club where I'm also not a dj :-)

Yes he did have a right to air his opinion but I had a right to respond when I thought it to be innacurate, out of date and unconstructive; you still haven't told me which bit you thought was constructive criticism. You're probably right about the name calling but sometimes it gets you like that. It did seem to have an agenda so I thought I'd give a bit back. I had no idea the chap/lady had been to 100 100 Club all nighters as I'm guessing his real name isn't Frankie Crocker so it might have helped if he had mentioned that in the first place or said his name instead of covering himself up.I started the thread as I had been reading the threads bemoaning the handbagging revival and thought the busy Lifeline, Xfire and 100 Clubs of late were another side to the story that could do with an airing. I was probably also reminding a few people we were on and there was a great line-up for those who like to hear new discoveries and great rare soul records too; there's an element of promotion in many posts but they are not neccesarily the over-riding reason for the post. I'm still not sure why you would make an objection to that.I don' think one post is detremental at all, in fact it seems to have got a pretty good buzz going on the night, but if it's innacurate then I'm afraid I'm not gonna let it ride. Thanks for the kind comments on the promoting lark, it's certainly been a lively ride. Ady

By the way Ady,I must congratulate you on having Andy Dyson on. He's one of the very few Dj's that I would travel to hear these days.

Was there in August, there were no hand baggers at all. There were some younger mod types - great! Good crowd up for some dancing and appreciating the tunes. Was there in 1981 too, some odd balls there back in 1981 for sure….Bananarama, Shane McGowan etc.

Get down there Saturday and get on with it!  Great line up, great niters!

Now I'm up I might as well reply. Apologies about the name calling Frankie.1) The London scene hasn't gone stale, there are a lot of very good nights on down here, particularly in the last year or two. I didn't see the thread that stated it was stale so I can't comment on it.2) No idea if there will be any handbaggers. If there are the security will take any drinks off the dancefloor and if they're mugging about be given a quick explanation of what the club and scene is about and if they persist be hoyed out.3) There aren't any potholes on the dancefloor, there's a raised patch that has been there since the first evening dance in 1980 and a couple of small blocks that are extra worn down. The floor has always been this way and yet we're still going strong thirty odd years later so it can't be too bad?4) Both the 6TS and the Northern Soul scene were started by mods, have always had mods as a part of it and will continue to encourage their presence as they are an integral part of our scene, have a great positive attitude and are intertwined with the whole London black music scene. It's the 6TS Rhythm 'N' Soul society started by an original mod and a late 60s mod. If you want to hear the kind of records a mod has, come down in December to hear Chris Dale spin some of the top sounds going in a classy and stylish manner that will keep the crowd ver happy indeed.5) Everyone's a non-member / walk in. The membership was used to get round the archaic licensing laws of the 80s and 90s. If the people who want to come in are sober, respectful and understand what sort of night it is they

are welcome to enter and enjoy themselves. We try the best we can to avoid any culture clashes with the regulars but we are not in the business of vetting people as to their suitability for a night out. If there are problems we deal with them. That rarely happens and is quickly sorted.6) No numbers aren't low, we don't let in handbaggers or smack heads. How can you say it's handbaggers central when you don't go any more?7) I still can't see any constructive criticism there.

Ady. Thanks for taking the trouble to write this. My latest post has not been saved for some reason, probably the rubbishy hotel broadband I'm using, and as it was a longish one, I'm not redoing it... Nothing in your comments I would disagree with apart from the quota of non- soulies who attend. In fact, I'm enlightened by them as this is the benefit of discussion. I would respectfully suggest that you re-establish the membership policy to maintain a soul clientele and deflect the non- soulies elsewhere. Zero tolerance of Handbaggers Okeh?

Sean Hayden runs Burnley allnighters now, on a very successful basis, and I've attended several times and enjoyed them.

So Phil, if they were so good when you were running them, why aren't you still running them ? I never attended when you were the promoter, so I have no idea of how successful your nights were. I've been told things of course, but as I didn't attend, they are not really relevent.

I'm just curious why an allnighter that had such a good sound system, outstanding DJs, top people, these are your words by the way, should not still be running?

Try not to ever comment on threads like these, but The 100 club has always been great night out, and I've always liked the fact that you get all sorts of people in there, especially Mods and folk from over seas, and the occasional celebrity; the music is always great, and the Dance floor, well its legendary isn't it, I kind of like the fact that so many people have danced around the same bit of uneven floor as I have, and strangely were all still discussing it...

As for Non soul folk, if they want to party, and there is no silly buggers, let them in I say.. its all good... :D

In the 80's at the 100 club, Ady could be seen at the door vetting memberships with folk screaming that theirs hadnt came in post, my names on the door etc.

Take that out of the equation and the promoter can concentrate on providing the show.

The CCI were vetting memberships and dress code to stop also-rans appearing, this more than likely fueled the in-scene fighting and the "I was a mod before you was a mod" scenarios.

At the Annivesary, the younger crowd that had the actual foresight to get advance tickets, well they were on the floor most of the night. Teeth intact and using real shoes.

When out having a smoke and chewing the fat, a crowd of four pissheads that asked questions about the event at the door, were courteously persuaded that the event wasn't for them.

I would quite comfortably hit an event closer to Scotland with Djs of the same ilk, but doubt that will happen.

I love it, warts and all, and am quite sure if the casino was still here (unrenovated), there would be similar issues.

And yes, I'm amazed at the people who attend Sean's night that never came near when I ran it. Could be I'm not one of the clique that more or less run the soul scene. Could just be that I ran it for the dancers and not the people who expected to get a spot there. Maybe I'm just not well liked, who knows. it's history now.

I have no idea who this clique is who runs the soul scene and I'm not convinced this exists - I don't know you Qunvy and have no axe to grind but this comes across as a tad bitter mate.
