I had a recording on a cassette, now lost. I'm sure the title was 'Dead', it was slow tempo, very simple production. The lyric went like this "Dead...I wish I was...he's gone...I just wish I was dead'. I'd love to find this record. searched all over. Can anyone help ?

Richard Searling used to play the Charay version at the back end of Wigan sometimes. He really liked the song at that time.

Charay  is also responsible for the Mark 11 and another version  if memory serves me right.

There is also a cut on a cheap british L.P by another female who's name escapes me - incidently the philips version appeared on a cheap new ginea l.p too

Thanks again for the input, I'm not a connoisseur of deep soul, but after hearing the 4 versions, it's the Ede Robin track that really hits the spot now. As for Searling playing the 'Dead' track at Wigan Casino...are you sure ? I can't remember and I was a Searling Devotee. I remember Ede Robin's "There must be a love somewhere" being played, just dug it out and played it...What a cracking tune !

Chris, which Ede recording are you after ? (I just dance or listen to our music, I'm not a collector), start a new post on the subject and watch the vultures circle £££ ! Still interested to know if 'Dead' was played at the Casino though !

This was posted in a Facebook group I'm in. Thanks to Mark Allbones for putting this discography of "Dead" together.

Some lyric changes ie Carolyn Sullivan has the tamed down ""Phone in my hand" on the Philips release but the more shocking "razor in my hand" on the Soft release.

Some were released with the title "I Don't Care No More" such as Edith Jones and Berry Street Station.

VOCAL
Edith Jones & Leon Childs Combo: I Don’t Care No More/ You Lay So Easy On My Mind (Le Cam 316) "Razor"
Berry Street Station: I Don't Care No More / King Bee (LeCam 630) "Razor"
Carolyn Sullivan: Dead/ Wow (Soft 1020) "Razor"
Carolyn Sullivan: Dead!/ Wow (Philips 40507) "Phone"
Cresa Watson: Dead/ Alpine Winter (Charay 45-700) (promo, two label variants) "Tears"
Cresa Watson: Dead/ Alpine Winter (Charay C-91) "Tears"
Phyllis Brown: Dead/ Mrs. Bean (Soft S-1037) (tuneless strings added) "Phone"
Ede Robin (purported to exist - never seen one)

INSTRUMENTAL
The Mark II: Bread and Soul / Dead (Charay C-85)
Sons of Moses: Deviled Egg/ Alpine Winter (Bix BI-102)
Cutty Sark: Dusty/ Dusty (Inst.) (Zuma 652) "Oh mi amor."
Cutty Sark: Dusty/ The Night of Phantom (Zuma 652)
Zuma: Dusty/ Inst. (Zuma 652)

Well at least you can see and hear the Ede Robin version now Dave, thanks to SPC's earlier post, and maybe pass it onto Mark Allbones. Hope that's the Discography complete, as for me...I'm outclassed, I asked a simple question, got it answered and got myself an education...apart from one thing...was it ever played at a Northern Soul Venue ?

I spend a Friday night in...and I'm trying to find a drum break in a track that doesn't have one. Thank heavens |I'm going to watch the 'Rovers play Middlesbrough tomorrow, now that's real entertainment. I wish I was dead.

What 'kin drum break ?

Hello Dave, not a 'drum break' as such but the drum intro (just the first two bars of the track before the bass guitar and organ comes in) has been sampled and looped into a longer rhythm track.

You only need one bar anyway because the first two bars are the same.

Thanks for the credit, Dave.  I became a tad obsessed with this track some years ago and I'm still trying to hold myself back from needlessly buying all the versions, though they are all slightly different. The Phyllis Brown version is horrific (simply because the dubbed-on strings are incredibly out-of-tune) and will be the very last one I need in the house. The Ede Robin "version" was not a unique release at all. It was merely the Edith Jones vocal (the first incarnation, I believe) credited to Ede Robin for is inclusion on a Charly compliation LP called Major Bill's Texas Soul.

Does anyone know of another record from which the backing track has been re-used for so many different unique releases? Bill must really have had faith in it, the nutter.

Wasn't Zuma actually Bill's wife? I may have made that up. Anyway, here she is gracing the Dead track to warrant Bill pressing it up yet again:

Ahh  - your pet subject :D

Managed to pick up the Edith Jones 45 thanks to your excellent discography.

(The Ponderosa Stomp was great by the way)

No. Its Carolyn Sullivan on that. 'Razor..' lyrics version. LP is called ''Hey Paula! Hey Baby! and other great teenage hits' (or summat) on Redifusion..

I think someone once told me there's an instrumental credited to Johnny Lytle.

The good news is that a stringless version of this exists too. Was released on the same number (Soft 1037) but artist name on the label is just Phyllis instead of Phyllis Brown. The not so good news is that it's a bugger to find. Beautiful version though, well worth tracking down.

Well, well, well. Thanks to a late entry into the canon from the wonderful Diggin' Dave, the "Dead" story has a new and hitherto unknown chapter. A second version of the Phyllis Brown vocal exists without the hideous strings.

I almost dare not ask if there are any more versions known to anyone, but please get in touch if you have information!

VOCAL
Edith Jones & Leon Childs Combo: I Don’t Care No More / You Lay So Easy On My Mind (Le Cam 316) "Razor"

Berry Street Station: I Don't Care No More / King Bee (LeCam 630) "Razor"

Carolyn Sullivan: Dead / Wow (Soft 1020) "Razor"

Carolyn Sullivan: Dead! / Wow (Philips 40507) "Phone"

Cresa Watson: Dead / Alpine Winter (Charay 45-700) (white promo, two label variants) "Tears"

Cresa Watson: Dead / Alpine Winter (Charay C-91) "Tears"
Phyllis: Bobby's Girl / Dead (Soft S-1037) "Phone"

Phyllis Brown: Dead/ Mrs. Bean (Soft S-1037) (tuneless strings added) "Phone"

The Ede Robin version does not exist. It's merely the Edith Jones version miscredited on a Bill Smith compilation LP)

INSTRUMENTAL

The Mark II: Bread and Soul / Dead (Charay C-85)

Sons of Moses: Deviled Egg/ Alpine Winter (Bix BI-102)

Cutty Sark: Dusty/ Dusty (Inst.) (Zuma 652) "Oh mi amor" whispered over the top on A-side

Cutty Sark: Dusty/ The Night of Phantom (Zuma 652)

Zuma: Dusty/ Inst. (Zuma 652)

Total nerd-fest update.

VOCAL

Carolyn Sullivan: Dead / Wow (Soft 1020) "Razor" NEED SCANS & CLIPS

Carolyn Sullivan: Dead! / Wow (Philips 40507) "Phone" (Promos are black on pink, issues standard blue) Late 1967.

Cresa Watson: Dead / Alpine Winter (Charay 45-700) "Tears" (White promos have two label variants, with/out Cotillion distribution ring text. A national green/yellow issue also has this text)

Cresa Watson: Dead / Alpine Winter (Charay C-91) "Tears" (Local issue. Three distinct 45s share this cat. number, only one features "Dead.") Both issues probably 1969 judging from Atlantic matrices on the national pressings.

Phyllis: Bobby's Girl / Dead (Soft S-1037) "Phone"

Phyllis Brown: Dead / Mrs. Bean (Soft S-1037) (tuneless strings added) "Phone" (Both crap flipsides shared a pairing on S-1037 as well.) Probably 1970.

Edith Jones & Leon Childs Combo: You Lay So Easy On My Mind / I Don’t Care No More (Le Cam 316) "Razor" (A-side is a Bobby G. Rice cover, putting this no earlier than the end of 1972)

Edith Jones: I Don't Care No More / Help Me Make It Thru The Nite (Le Cam 335)

Berry Street Station: I Don't Care No More / King Bee (Le Cam 630) (Repress of Soft 1020 "razor" version backed with another recycled flip.) Probably a mid-to-late 1970s cash-in. Also appears with A/B reversed on Le Cam 642.

Phyllis Brown: I've Got Something On My Mind / I Don't Care No More (Le Cam 630) NEED SCANS/CLIPS

(The Ede Robin "version" does not exist. It's merely the Edith Jones version credited as Ede on a Bill Smith compilation LP on Charly)

INSTRUMENTAL

The Mark II: Dead / Bread and Soul (Charay C-85)

The Mark II: Alpine Winter / Dead (Charay C-85) There are FIVE pairings of sides with the C-85 cat. number. Only two feature "Dead." Has organ solo not found in other versions.

Sons of Moses: Deviled Egg / Alpine Winter (Bix BI-102) (Another release shares this cat. number with "Malibu" replacing "Deviled Egg.")

Cutty Sark: Dusty / Dusty (Inst.) (Zuma 652) "Oh mi amor" whispered over the track on A-side

Cutty Sark: Dusty (Inst.) / The Night of Phantom (Zuma 652) (Inst. Flipside is a Larry & the Bluenotes instrumental)

Zuma: Dusty / Dusty (Inst.) (Zuma 652) DOES THIS EXIST?

Paul (Paul & Paul) Happy Music / Dusty (Le Cam 346) A-side is a repress of Charay C-48, the flip is the spoken A-side of Cutty Sark above.

SPOKEN WORD

Billy Dee: Soul Heaven / King Bee (Le Cam 124) Thanks to Tony Rounce for reminding me about this one from 1975 that I had seen listed some years ago and had forgotten. Basically, "Soul Heaven" is a lyrical revamp of Eddie Dean's "Hillbilly Heaven" (recorded many times by artists such as Tex Ritter) but Billy describes arriving in the ever-after to meet the likes of Otis Redding rather than Hank Williams...and using the Dead track as intermittent backing, but the fuller Mark II version.

Irv Jackson: Here Come The Rattlesnakes / Cool (Maridene M-104)

Irv Jackson: Here Come The Rattlesnakes / Dusty (Le Cam 312)

A spoken-word gospel track - a pointless of cover of the Wendell Bagwell hit - using the Dead backing throughout and the longest version yet heard. The flip on the Le Cam pressing is the same instrumental as Zuma 652. Cool flipside is the same as found on the Fiery Spartans, James Moore etc.
