Northern Soul Top 500 Time For A Review

John May

Recommended Posts

Had a good look through the NS Top 500 & think it's time for a review, lot's of tracks on there never heard nowadays ( Sliced Tomatoes ) etc. & stranglely Jackie Wilson doesn't feature at all  .

Who was responsible for the Top 500  ?

How can we start a campaign for an updated version I.E NS Top 500 V.2. ( Surely it's not set in stone for ever ).

It's not really a Top 500 anyway Pete - it's just Ruby Andrews and Moses Smith played 250 times each!.

:D

I'd rather hear them two 250 times each than some of the other shite in that list mate. And before anyone tries to pick a fight with me I'll add..........................imo. :D

Just looking through the older Top 500 list and it includes tracks such as 'Strange Change' - Herd Ward as well as Thelma Lindsey and Lou Edwards, yet play any of these at your average Handbagger night and you'd have an empty floor and cries of 'Can't you play something we know?"... :g:

It's incredible really - do these people not like these records, or do they genuinely not know them?

If the latter it's a sad state of affairs - amateurs, superficial blah, blah

Sorry - that emoticon is a bit larger than intended  :D

Just looking through the older Top 500 list and it includes tracks such as 'Strange Change' - Herd Ward as well as Thelma Lindsey and Lou Edwards, yet play any of these at your average Handbagger night and you'd have an empty floor and cries of 'Can't you play something we know?"... :g:

3 great tracks there, classic oldies to the vast majority, completely new to the young generations grasping the nettle and in no mans land with the handbaggers, the vast majority of whom want the clubby tunes they grew up with, never allowed theirselves to be subjected to change or progress and generally...from my viewpoint ( and it's only my view ) are the types who have NEVER ventured out of their own back yard and experienced what other venues have to offer. i think that the top 500 book addresses several generations, selecting tunes that have been popular at one time or another but with one thing in common...they have not been forgotten, they are memorable and that even includes the dire...nobody danced to them all of the time, but they're in the book because they caused people to dance. of course there's no reason NOT to have another book..perhaps the top 500 discoveries of the last 3 decades ( since wigan )?

I've got 54 of these on the labels listed (obviously the good 54), and 10 of them on different labels to those listed.(again the good 10).

ie:

49. Covey, Julian — A Little Bit Hurt (Island)- i've got this on phillips (demo)

73. Randell, Lynne — Stranger in My Arms (Epic)- got this on Aus issue

Jon is really singing about my soul scene

Soul music dosent and never did need the top 500, or a price guide

soul music ....Its just too personal and special for rubbish like this

i wish the list and guides had never ever happened

I dont need a list to tell me what a great oldie sounds like,

A conversation with people who have good taste and what they are loving right now would be better for me.

respect for 40 years of digging for great music

I love established oldies but obviously new to me vintage records

dont kill it by making "the scene" a list of safe played out oldies and nothing more

its killing the established rare oldies too, the ones you should just hear now and again

i am bored shitless with this list

and some of my rarest records are on it

its gonna take time

we deserved better

throw away the top 500 and the price guides

it was a stupid idea

it may work for mtv new releases, but it sucks for bringing obscure vintage 45s through

I predict a small scene of fans who will be underground just like the 80s / early 90s again soon

who will make the effort once again

respect for fun music and each other again

i believe what goes around comes around

Yes, more than a handful of the records in that list are w*nk

I think people are missing the concept of the book. It wasn't supposed to be the best 500 records of all time, it was meant to be the most consistently popular over the years, which is why Eddie Parker is deservedly low in comparison with say Dobie Gray.

It ain't far off base either Pete!x I had 4 tapes with around 100 tunes on made in around '77...and they are all featured in the list above!!x

Number 76 is interestiing tho'! I always thought The Tams 'Hey Girl Don't Bother Me' was an underground tune in the 60's and became 'pop' in the 70's?? In 1977...my mate Wayne put both sides on me tape.....and to be honest....i'd considered the B side 'Northern' and the Hey Girl the handbag side...!x  played the B in the 90's too and not many knew it even then!!x Tune methinks...and makes me top 501!!!x

And of course, Pete, only in the opinion of the author.

Which doesn't make it any less valid.

Though I was pretty heavily involved in the first couple of editions (as designer and contributing writer, with Pete providing a most of the old memberships etc), I always had issue with the definition of 'top 500' - to go purely on popularity across the WHOLE scene simply reintroduces the lowest common denominator factor of the pop charts. Where do you draw the line of 'northern soul scene'? If you include EVERY soul night in the country then you could justifiably start to expect to see something like The Four Tops' 'I'll Be There' because it would get heavily played at a low brow Motown do, though most wouldn't consider it 'Northern'.

Next comes the consideration of time frame - something like Astral Trip could justifiably claim a place for having been extremely big during the early-mid 80s - but someone who joined the scene post about 1988 wouldn't have a clue what it was and would be amazed it was popular.

Like many I think there is a whole slew of tracks that should've made it in, though at the time the book was groundbreaking (and is still probably by far the biggest selling book on the subject), being the first by a proper 'insider' to the scene and Kev deserves plaudits for taking on the task.

IMO this list demonstrates a selection primarily from a short period of the scenes timeline. Therefore of no relevance to me whatsoever,

Good guideline for the nostalgia scene though.

I don't know anyone who was questioned for asked for any input to compile the top 500?

Is something like The Commodore more popular on this scene than all those below it? I don't think so personally.  I can't remember the last time I heard it out and hope I never do.

I can even disagree with myself on these lists. Recall contributing to a list on here a while ago, was it Your own Top 20 or somehting like that? I compiled a list and a few days later I'd completely changed my mind. I still put on an old tape or CD and think "Oh this would definitely be in my top 20". My Top 20 consists of around 200 records. However, that doesn't stop me criticising others and this list doesn't sit well with me, but as Pete S points out, I would be questioning myself if it did.

Top500

Richard Chorley tried to put together an updated version a couple of years on here. I think it ended up with the same 500 records on though.

Told myself I wouldn't do this, and i really am busy at work but . . . . .

Is The Group Cecil Washington in there? Had a scan through driven by critical curiosity and didn't spot it. Obviously not in the same league as Exciteres Beaching for the Best, but surely could have snook in the lower order with Eddie Parker?

SteveL - we need an oldies contest with this list in mind!!!

No Cecil Washington, not in there, and as i said at the start no Jackie Wilson, & also Bunny Sigler " Girl don't make me wait " however "Let the good times roll "is.  Beginning now to feel that the Top500 is more of a Quirky referrence tool rather than anything of real value to the scene.  It's a bit like the 10 commandments written in stone never to be revised.........Quaint, but irrelevant.

I rarely hear Let The Good Times Roll when at that kinda night but you do hear Girl Don't Make Me Wait.  Same for the invitations, I would have thought most of those below it are more popular and played more than Skiing In The Snow?

I've got an idea for a Christmas game, NS Top 500 bingo.

Sat around tables at a soul night / nighter, only allowed to bring a 100 count box, have to place your (OVO) offering on the table to match the numbers being called (or played for that matter).

May need a little more work but if you're reading Kev R it's my idea!

Whilst I'm at it can I claim NS Monopoly, collecting nighters around the board (100 Club = Mayfair, discuss yourself what's Old Kent Road), collecting a set to play with attendance fees according for landing on it. If only I could find an NS Tat stall at a weekender to sell this stuff!

But it would seem many of these are popular from say 72 to 78 and then again whenever the returnees came back. Can't remember many of these being consistently popular at most of the nighters I went to in the 80s / early 90s. I certainly can't remember anyone playing Dobie Gray back then, it was considered dead by most people I know.

I suppose you had to going to nighters then to see what was popular during that period, that's where this supposedly top 500 has a massive gap and suggests a lack of experience of almost a couple of decades to me.

As I said, it's all time which spans 50 years, and in that 50 years Dobie Gray has always been and will always be more popular than Eddie Parker, it doesn't just get points from nighter plays, but from soul nights, youth clubs, pub do's, radio play, anything to suggest popularity.

If you take most of these records at face value and not by how many times you've ever heard them or if you're bored of them, this is some of the greatest music ever created on this planet, at least 200 of those are well worthy in their place of the best Northern 45's of all time.

Plus - Kev Roberts stuck his head on the block here and published a list based on his experiences.  How many of you lot have done it?  (Not aimed at you Byrney).

I've done it - I did a Top 100 and broadcast it.

Appreciate not aimed at me Pete, but surely Kev put his head on the block to sell a product for profit. Nowt wrong with that but I don't see that as something those of us who haven't done similar should feel inferior about or should hesitate to question, just because we don't have the same drive to use our experience of the scene to derive an income.

Whereas you did your podcast out of altruistic motives, fair play.

Always difficult this top 500 lark without seeing the methodology behind it.
