Actually as the originator of the post, and having read all the different and humourous comments, i'm beginning to view this now from a slightly different viewpoint.  I actually see the Top500 as mearly a referrence tool & not something that is totally set in stone. 

I think that if someone wanted to gain absolute basic knowledge of what they would expect to hear at a weekender main room, or a local oldies night, then the list maybe useful & most tracks are on youtube nowadays.

I also think that as peoples knowledge grows as many long serving soulies on this website will know, we start to question things ( for all the right reasons ) & i think the top500 is very much there to be debated.

 Maybe if the numbering system was removed, and the list was just the 500 most well known Northern Soul oldies over the decades then we could all re-arrange to fit our own personnal taste.  Really good debate though, & i'm enjoying reading through the posts. 

Still think some tracks shouldn't have been included, & there are many that should have been included.

Whilst it may be a tongue in cheek comment Ted...that is an astute observation which today a DJ can take into consideration as a positive methinks!!x In the 90's...most 'newbies' were oldies coning back for the first time since Wigan etc aged 35 ish. Their kids had grown up and out smashing windows so they came to 'dance' and reminisce. I noticed the stark difference when attending the 2 gigs I did t'other week up t'north. Hard core everywhere that i knew from old....and I was astonished at how many sat around at both gigs merrily tapping away all day/night....and perhaps got up 2 or 3 times during the night....and went home ecstatic...as they did in their 30's I recall!x

As a DJ back then....I played to 'entertain' with perhaps uptempo tunes up the playing order....! But today....I believe perhaps more 'quality' midtempo....did I say that???....erm...not so stomping gear....can be played! Much of which I couldn't have played back in the 90's.....or suffer the backlash of many chewing chums...hehe!!x I believe there is more of that 'unknown' to be spun than the other these days....so it should be a 'dream' for any DJ having a go today....I reckon!!x

...at a 'normal' disco....birthday/wedding....3/4ers of the tunes I play are to entertain the folk sat doing nowt except listening. I play me 'quality' stuff then....to satisfy all. That wasn't the option back in the 90's on the scene when I wos there......as said....LUV IT!!!x

I love me oldies as much as the next man (some), but I don't want to hear NS by numbers every time I go to a Nighter....I prefer a good mix of oldies, newies, rareities, 6ts, 7ts & beyond, stompers, mid tempo, Northern, Xover, Modern with a touch of the gritty soulful funkers thrown in, preferably in one room within the same DJ sets....clever imaginative DJ's can do this, the job of the DJ is not just to put records on....

 

I would never knowingly attend a Nighter where I wasn't guaranteed to hear something exciting that I didn't know...& I would be running to the dance floor to show appreciation if I wasn't already on there already.

 

Lazy, boring DJ's playing the same records to the same punters week in week out isn't NS as I know it....

As high as 50% going to listen Ted? I'd have guessed 40% of those not dancing go to talk and see there mates, whether it's an oldies or a rarities do. Reading reviews on Source, how many times do you see had a great laugh with my mates. I know it's all part of it, but it's the one area where there's no massive distinction between the 2 crowds IMO.

I could go on, got loads more, (all good tracks (imo) but as you can see none of these would go down very well at an Oldies nite (imho but i'm often wrong), so when Djing do you let your head rule your heart, or am i just a bottler? or should i just throw the odd 1-2 in a set. I belong to an internet soul forum (KTF) & one of the lads ran an alternative top 200,it was complied over quite a few weeks & members voted on each record & he worked out there positions.It's not a massive forum so it's only a small section of soulies so wouldn't dream of calling it a definitive list but it certainly made for interesting reading & not many of the so called top 500 made it to the list.I was over joyed at the number 1........Walter Jackson-It's An Uphill Climb To The Bottom OKeh............proper record.

Any list is simply the opinion of the participants.  It would be nice if we could do a list on Soul Source as was attempted in the past but sadly didn't come to fruition due to illness.

:rofl:HI ALL...This is a strange thread (not that I have read it all), it's strange for a few reasons, the first being the top 500 is a personal view from a DJ who has spent many years on the scene, he has DJ in many top venues on the soul scene, added to this fact, is the book list NORTHERN SOUL RECORDS that cover a 40+ year period, those records that come from the 7ts that are not stompers like Alfie Davidson, are still classed as northern soul in the fact that they were played on the northern soul scene,

 

Secondly any one can compose a list of their top 500, the book is Kev Roberts TOP RARE 500 NORTHERN SOUL RECORDS.

So it is up to Kev what records are inside it's cover? surly it's down to him if he wants to change it's contents?.

 

It is my opinion that the book comes very close to a top 500 that I would have chosen, maybe some records would be in different positions, but that's all, as I say anyone can put together their own 500, but would it be to the high standard of Kevs book I think not?

I remember the list you refer to. I've got it somewhere, plus an earlier list, think that was from the 70s, maybe Blues & Soul. If I find it I will type it out and post it up. Unfortunately finding it may take some time, lol.

It looks to me that a lot of that list is made up from tunes that were popular around the millenium. With some trusted oldies included. eg Arin Deman - I rarely heard it played at that time, but Mickey Lanay was pretty popular.

 

As much as i have complete disinterest in Kev's 500. I think it at least spans the decades, (Up to the time of print) whereas the KTF one looks to me to be more of a snapshot of a few months about 10 years ago.

Hi Sean, Thanks for the reply, wasn't aware of the update, however, if it has been updated, who decided on the update ?.

 

Every 5 years there's a Northern Soul Loya Jirga, I think it takes place on an abandoned car park close to Wigan. It's there that chiefs from all the soul tribes (Northern, Rare, Modern, etc.) gather and vote. That's the main failing of that way is it's a show of hands and open to intimidation, would be much better to have a secret ballot.

 3 great tracks there, classic oldies to the vast majority, completely new to the young generations grasping the nettle and in no mans land with the handbaggers, the vast majority of whom want the clubby tunes they grew up with,never allowed theirselves to be subjected to change or progress and generally...from my viewpoint ( and it's only my view ) are the types who have NEVER ventured out of their own back yard and experienced what other venues have to offer. i think that the top 500 book addresses several generations,selecting tunes that have been popular at one time or another but with one thing in common...they have not been forgotten, they are memorable and that even includes the dire...nobody danced to them all of the time, but they're in the book because they caused people to dance. of course there's no reason NOT to have another book..perhaps the top 500 discoveries of the last 3 decades ( since wigan )?

 Could you list say about 50 "progressive tunes", in your opinion, would be interested to see what the "now generation" likes to play.

Everything does depend on one's definition of Northern Soul. But Uphill Climb To The Bottom appears to be popular with almost everyone I know, even those on the Modern scene. Quite a few, including myself, would like it at their funeral. It is probably the most popular ender. Just my opinion of course.

 Could you list say about 50 "progressive tunes", in your opinion, would be interested to see what the "now generation" likes to play.

My nominations for the  list included United Sounds' It's All Over Baby; Hopkins Bros' Shake Cheri, Four Dynamics' Things A Lady Ain't Supposed To Do; Robert Tanner's Sweet Memories; Joseph Webster's My Love Is Strong; Mixed Feelings' Sha La La; (my friends would not be surprised at those two). Are these what you would call progressive? Some have been around for quite a while. I did nominate others including Marion Stewart, the Adorables and Ruby's Feminine Ingenuity.

 

I remember when there was the attempt to do a top 30 NS list on here, quite a few top 20s were posted by participants. Off the top of my  head I seem to remember that She'll Come Running Back featured in loads of them. Again it is only my opinion but I would guess that might be the most popular record if a poll could be held on all Soul Source members, it's another one that most like, whether you prefer oldies or "rare" or whatever you describe your taste in soul.

It looks to me that a lot of that list is made up from tunes that were popular around the millenium. With some trusted oldies included. eg Arin Deman - I rarely heard it played at that time, but Mickey Lanay was pretty popular.

 

As much as i have complete disinterest in Kev's 500. I think it at least spans the decades, (Up to the time of print) whereas the KTF one looks to me to be more of a snapshot of a few months about 10 years ago.

Like all attempts at lists it is simply the opinion of the participants. Plenty on there that I hear quite often at nights I attend. Some were totally new to me, so it shows what different taste we all have.

Great idea for a Thread. Good book. Good concept. Successful project yielding three editions that I have read, enjoyed and keep for reference. Nowadays outmoded - could be a list of what Kev had played at Wigan by 1978? Now a volume of oldies that made an impact someplace as Northern soul evolved and reached a late 70's peak. Would be a handy guide for a wannabe oldies DJ just starting out...

Info on artists, DJ credits, venue spun and quotes from soul fans to ensure sales of 5,000. Water repellant pages to drool over. If a record is in the book, it's been well received: not in the book then it goes into Volume 2.

Great idea for a Thread. Good book. Good concept. Successful project yielding three editions that I have read, enjoyed and keep for reference. Nowadays outmoded - could be a list of what Kev had played at Wigan by 1978? Now a volume of oldies that made an impact someplace as Northern soul evolved and reached a late 70's peak. Would be a handy guide for a wannabe oldies DJ just starting out...

I was considering doing a book of rare soul scans as I love looking at them myself. It was just an idea that myself and Andy Killick kicked around for a while but nothing came of it. I was thinking it would be a very good quality hardback, coffee table type tome. 

I thought that the Manship Million Dollars book was very poor indeed. The label scans were too small to be read, and some of the records featured were just rubbish in my humble opinion. Also his rating system was a mile out on a lot of the tunes. But that will always be open to individual opinion anyway. Oh and the pages fell out as well.

I wanted to have actual size label scans in full gloss colour.

Probably the cost of such a book would limit the amount that would be sold. And lets face it, we aren't all chin stroking vinyl junkies are we?

Yeah this is a big, bulky book but they layout inside is scattershot, if done properly it could be great

Exactly what I said. It would be a gamble.

I have never understood the label collectors, to me it's all about what's in the grooves. But if it's a fantastic record, and it's rare, and it looks gorgeous. Well then that's magic. To me having listened to a lot of the discs in John Manship's book, and on his rarest of the rare section when it was there. I thought they were nothing to do with northern soul, and weren't worth listing. For a book to be interesting to me, I would want to see scans of records I dream of owning, not records that are rare but when you hear

them you never want to hear them again.

Label collecting is just like stamp collecting.

Any list is simply the opinion of the participants.  It would be nice if we could do a list on Soul Source as was attempted in the past but sadly didn't come to fruition due to illness.

 

There are a lot of truly awful songs on that list, quite a few i had never heard before and after listening to some of them I hope to never hear them again.
