Advice for a Los Angles "Rookie" getting into the music

Had the following posted via "contact us" took liberty of posting up here as sure lot of readers be up for helping out

I live in Los Angeles and recently discovered the Northern Soul genre.  I want to purchase a good "introductory" CD of Northern Soul music and am told that for a rookie, the best would be to buy one of two two-CD UK compilations...either "Northern Soul All-Nigher" (60 tracks, Virgin label) OR "The In Crowd" (50 tracks).  Which of these two would you endorse?  Any other good recommendation for a newcomer to Northern Soul?

My advice, well depends really on just how much soul you already in to

Those cds may be a good starting point, as not really familar with them, cant really say. Perhaps a look at track listings, if lot not familar with give it a go? Sure be some sites with clips as well, which can help you see if worthwhile.

Though would suggest checking area for any local soul nites or even trying to get in touch with soul fans from there, (know of a few round those parts) as best way to enjoy to me is out and about.

As said not really much help, time against me!

Maybe some from your part of the world can post up any details of soul events, clubs, emails etc etc

Also am sure there are a few readers out there who can pass on better tips and info for you ....

the wigan casino story and the golden torch story are what i started with , i then got the casino story continues aswell as the twisted wheel story and then the blackpool mecca story followed by the cleathorps one.

this gave me an idea of the songs played at different venues and at different times
