I think my choice would have to be ian levine as he was miles in front of everybody around the 1972/1973 era .

There's a lot of people who play records but not that many djs imho i.e. people who use the mic to get a crowd going etc.

I would agree with Pendulum that Ian Levine was/is a good dj, don't know if he was the best though as i haven't seen all the djs from yesteryear.

The best current dj imho is Keith Money, good tunes & good use of the mic to build an atmosphere thus getting the crowd buzzing.

I like 'em all.

You need balls to stand up there and play your top tunes knowing there will be plenty of miserable sods moaning because you didnt play their fave, or any they knew. You need balls to pick up the mic for the first time and speak into it.

As long as it doesnt go to their head, (in 99% of cases it doesnt), they all entertain me.

Being an oldies fan, my favourites were Dave Evison & Brian Rae. They were great at the monthly Oldies nighters towards the end of the Casino, which was always packed, even when attendencies were dropping like the perverbiel lead balloon. Even on non oldies nights Brian Rae was a class act in M's, & Dave Evison just had that knack of reactivating long forgotten underplayed tunes.

Horses for courses surely.

If they do stand up there and play all their top tunes regardless of people moaning they're not doing a proper job... or are they?

But like any job (DJing is a job) you can be having a shit time & this is then reflected in how they perform ....

there are few (IMHO) who show consisitancy in all of their performances, & I have heard "Top Djs" do a few crap spots & if that had been my only "Hearing" I would have thought again about making the effort to listen to them again ....

I like a DJ who has the sounds, can put a good spot together, can read & respond to the room not just dancers but listeners, is there to please "me" the punter & not impress the other DJs.

Is good on a mike (not just loud) & leaves me satisfied, but wanting more !!!!

But more importantly (for me) I want a DJ who is enjoying what they are doing ...

So whose my "best" DJ ..... hmmm aint got one !!!!

have got lots that ENTERTAIN ME ....

Aaaw Stuart. Simons going to recognise the sarcasm you know.

Not an easy one to answer, over the past 30 years generally your progressing and moving forward within your music style, so fav oldies dj way back, is not necessarily gonna be fav dj today especially also depends on venues and area you travel too.

Looking back loved Steve Whittles spots in Mr M's and Richard Serling in main hall. Today I'm spoilt for choice - Butch - Andy D - Chalky - Sam - Bob Hinsley - Paul S -Kitch ..........all do it for me

Must be SEAN CHAPMAN.........is the cheque in the post Sean.....and Shane can you edit that last bit out for me ...the bit about the cheque !!!

Seriously ....love someone who works a room...but they've got to have the tunes!!! And i'm equally happy with no Mic-action and a well thought out set ....especially if there's a few tasty morsels which have me donning my anorak and peering through me band-aid secured 'Jack Duckworths' and muttering...what's this ????

Bloody Glory Boy. Do you hate the punk elite? Well do you?

Dunno about all this only a proper dj if they use the mike stuff, generally I find it a complete bore and encourages people to shout nonsense, can't hear what they're saying half the time anyway. Let the music do the talking, use the mic in moderation if at all. Nothing worse than someone screaming "You can dance to this one if you want!" or telling us how wonderful a record is when it closely resembles the most boring record you could ever possibly be afraid that you might hear.

I'll might play a few oldies just for you at Hitchin Winston in September ohmy.gif

Only one for me Butch, been doing the business for over 20 years when records are and have been harder to discover and "break" to the dancers unlike the 70's etc when records were plentiful and many could be thrown to one side as there was many more waiting to be played ansd discovered :P

Think that was me Stu that brought the mic thing up, to me if you just play records then your a selector but to get the full dj badge you have to use the mic.

I agree with you totally that some people are incomprehensible & just shout down the mic but some people, Keith Money for instance use it to create an atmosphere along side the playing of the toons.

Btw Stu, you are a mighty fine Selector if you don't mind me saying! wink.gif
