I'm hesitant to say it definitely is the anniversary because it would be noisier, clapping wise normally. Pennington was 'banned' by the WC management, soon after release in '76, because of the Levine link, 3. I loved playing on the dance-floor to Willie J and Company - Boogie with your Baby, released on Kiki in '76. Early funk/disco didn't last long, certainly not 12 months. I think Pennington was 'banned' in late '76, so could have been played at the 3rd Anniversary, but not in '77. I think the first record I heard that was 'banned' was Lloyd Michel's 'The Flasher', (because of a Kev Roberts link) ? and the banning of records really pissed me off ! SHEFFSOUL Posted January 3, 2014 Share Posted January 3, 2014 Yeah that is a very early play for the Twans but are you sure about the Barbara Pennington ban, I have massive memories of it being played at the 3rd anniversary at least twice, Blanche Carter was played like 3 times, I still don't think there's enough atmosphere for it to be the actual anniversary if you compare it to the two tapes I've got but I do think it's before it yes the Twans is a bit early for the anniversary..att is a scan of a letter i wrote to back music dated 26th Feb 1977.it basically bemoans the playing of the same old same old (which i meant to include in a totally separate thread..like underplayed oldies-nothing new) however it places the Twans as a sound Searling had aquired but didnt always play..for the reasons in the letter..i rememebr the night that Richard bought the Twans from Levine at the Casino.I think he'd had it on loan for a short time and i was entertaining thoughts of buying it myself but that quickly evaporated when i learnt of the price around £90 i think..the Twans had been a favorite of mine since i heard it at the Mecca..then i captured it on a Cleethorpes tape in exc sound quality being played by Soul sam..who proudly announces hes actually managed to borrow it..(from Levine) when i learnt Searling was now the keeper i mythered him to play it which he did but not that often..it became much popular later on..a good 2/3 years after Levine had made it a Mecca favourite. 1 Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...

Along with the dancing, I remember that the synchronised patterns of clapping stunned me when I began to visit. I did take a tape recorder up twice. The only one I've still got was the 2nd Oldies Anniversary on 3.2.78. It's a C120 so dodgy quality, but at some point I'll try and copy it to digital and post it. Sadly the other tape, which was a normal nighter, got stolen back in the early 80's when I lived in a flat in Deptford. I'd left it in the music centre (remember them?), along with a Millie Jackson 'House for Sale' on the record deck, and the sods took the whole thing. I managed to talk up the value of the single but the insurance firm steadfastly refused to see the tape as having any value at all. Same thing happened in the late 90's when my wallet was stolen at work and the two things I most regretted losing were my Wigan membership card and one for the 6Ts Rhythm and Soul Club. Got the value of the wallet and cash that was in it, but nothing at all for the memories. 1 Link to comment Social source share More sharing options...
