Looking out for the best venues and sound systems to play the freshest mix of Northern, Modern Soul & Funk. Next do is the Xmas Special 19th Decemeber at Brixton's Plan b, recently voted London's 'Trendiest' club in the Evening Standard. But remember CAN aren't looking for these venues these venues are looking for CAN! So far we have lined up an eclectic DJ line up for our next Sunday evening bash. Maybe this is all part of the plan for these thrusting young deep funk types to rescue the northern soul scene from the terrible problems we have with our lousy sound systems? I'll get me skateboard.... As an addition, whilst I have enjoyed seeing Snowboy play and like his Jazz sets, I've never heard him play northern soul. This is from his website: "Snowboy is considered an authority on the JAZZ DANCE scene and is currently researching for a book he is writing on the U.K. Jazz Dance scene - 1970 to 1988 - and is also a FUNK specialist. Along with KEB DARGE he was one of the original D,J.'s at DEEP FUNK and is a columnist and writer for the world-respected Funk and Hip Hop magazine GRAND SLAM. Yes James did DJ at the last C.A.N. soul night (at Herbal, Shoreditch) and the place was packed to the rafters. Snowboy played at C.A.N.'s last all-dayer (at Cargo, Shoreditch) and I can testify that he has some great soul sounds. I don't really see the point you're trying to make though, Stuart. The flyer doesn't say that the DJs will only be playing "Northern Soul" - an equal amount of Dj time is given over to Modern, philly and funk. C.A.N.'s main mission has always been to attract fresh blood onto the soul scene - I can't see any harm in that... Link to comment

Actually, the flyer says "Northern Soul and Funk", Snowboy is the headline DJ and they've even named it after a classic ( ) northern soul record. The JT reference was a thread on another site so perhaps irrelevant here (the one where his cure for the "ills" of the northern soul scene was to book him and his mates as DJs, as I recall). Guest paulf Posted November 29, 2004 Share Posted November 29, 2004 Personally I have a 5000+ predominately 60's Northern collection to pull on so as both one of the DJs and the promoters I like to think traditional Northern will feature heavily on the nite, along with the funkier stuff, crossover and I am sure Mr Moore will chuck in the odd Black eyed peas track if he's feeling adventurous and wants to check whos listening I wouldn't say we are going for posh venues, just ones where you can hear the music properly. To give an example we payed out extra for a sound engineer at Cargo, we didn't believe the sound levels were good enough so we held back on their fees for the night - they didn't argue. Snowboy is headline as he is a broadly respected professional black dance music DJ. Personally I thought his last set he played was one of the best soul set's I heard for ages in the broadest sense. I did ask for playlist but it didn't come through in the end. I just remember hearing Greg Perry's Love Control and that thought that summed up the quality of his set. It may not have been full of £500 rareities (I have enough of those) but it was the thoughfullness to overall quality & tempo. It is true Keb's Deepfunk approach to nites has been an influence, but so have many others. DJs we have on to date have included (including BISCL co-sponsored events); James Trouble, Brian Rae, Keb Darge, Adey C, Warren, Tim Finch, Teff, Frankie, Dave Edwards, Ray Patriotic, Eddie Piller, Mr Mischief, Paul Seculare.... The spirit of Stafford lives on. All I can say is check it out and see what u think? Cheers Paul Link to comment

Basically you can have a do in the banqueting Hall at Buckingham Palace, but if you are playing Phil Collins records it aint gonna be great. I went to school round the corner, most of my scars and bullet wounds have healed now. re; Does anyone know if you can book Bucks Palace? I tell you what it's probably got a good wooden dance floor. If any members of the royal family were into Northern they would still have to pay on the door - they can offer me all the knighthoods in the world but they wouldn't get on the guest list. I heard Harry has been wiating for a guest spot at Valatones for that long that he gave up and went fox hunting instead. Spirit of Stafford...I could say a thing or 3 here. All I can say is that I went every fortnight for the last 2 years. I seem to remember it being a plush venue (lots of comfy seats, plenty of room for sales boxes, chats with fellow punters etc) & with excellent PA. I don't seem to remember saying oh this venue is too posh lets bin it and go to that s**thole scout hut down the road. I have been to my fair share of spit and sawdust venues, music policy is key but add in good club facilties, e.g. first class PA, space for dancing, record sales, Air con etc. People expect these things generally nowadays...things have moved on pushed the boundaries again... The spirit was also about playing 60's newies (& modern soul), some you hated, some you loved, it was about pushing the boundaries, just like Keb still does rocking the boat, stimulating change. This was long before the 100 club or the Dome entertained the idea of playing newies, semi knowns etc. Why Brixton, why not? South London has had a long history of connections with the rare soul scene e.g. Record Corner etc Kev Moore put in great effort to get his alldayers and allnighters off the ground there recently much to personal sacrifice and hence why wanted Kev back on his home turf. Plan B is a great venue... (sort of err...emm.. the excersise yard on Alcatraz meets Space 1999 well, if you were there you'd kow what I mean ) Anywayz it was a good turn out and my fav. set of the night came from Kev Moore, who played an hour of Modern Soul - don't ask me for a playlist - haven't got a clue about 70s-90s - I'll hassle Paul for one... Re scooter thing, Andy, I'm not sure where you're coming from.... Al and I are part of Bar Italia Scooter Club Soho (so are Trickster and Etsu!) and have a lot of great pals on the scooter scene - Paul and Patch (C.A.N. promoters) included. Just cause we own scooters doesn't mean we don't love our soul as much as the next person. You're not exactly an old-skool scooter club are you? And patch et al aren't exactly the norm on nationals are they? (it has been years mind you - do they still have 'nationals') But I also know you know what I mean. I've always had scooters and spent some time in Scooter Clubs but your average sccoterboy is poles apart from your average souly and Mod when it comes to a night out and the depth of musical knowledge and passion we share aren't they? Saying that If they want to spin Banana Banana at the 100 club I'm not getting in anyone's way! Link to comment

If Patch and Paul had been targeting "old skool" scooterists they'd have put on a completely different Dj line-up. The reason they promoted the event through scooter outlets (as well as soul events, record shops, cafes) was because as ya know there are many who own scooters and like soul but can't stand the scooter scene... especially the nationals ( camping!? ). Guest paulf Posted December 30, 2004 Share Posted December 30, 2004 The world is a crazy place. All I can say is that I started off as a MoD/Scooterist before going to 100 club/Stafford. Soul - Lambrettas - Clothes, I have a passion for them in equal measure. Maybe that still makes me a Mod. Funny you should mention camping but I went camping (not the mincing sort) at Holiday in Holland scooter rally earlier this year. What a fecking laugh. The Soul music was not the best in the world but everyone was having a great time - maybe it rekindled what is missing from the Soul scene but what the scooter scene still has? As most of us are aware the Scootering scenes main adopted music is Northern Soul. I don't understand why there is not more cross-over between the Northern and Scooterist dos. But I have my own suspicions and as far as Patch and I are concerned we will continue to advertise our nites to scooterists/mods/soulies/new blood alike. I was also talking to quite a few people in Holland about music and most love Northern but are put off by elitist tendencies at some/most Northern events. Many of them have been listening to Northern for years and are bored of the same old stuff but like the funkier sets and the music played at some of our dos. And funnily enough I drove to and from Holland in my trusty MA1 - it still does the trick when you are doing 85 on your TS1. Come on Andy never judge a book by it's cover. I would rather have 100 MA1s at one of our do's having a good time with open minds than 100 soulies who sit there winging about this & that - I am not suggesting this is always the case as probably half of those soulies are my mates, but what I think Patch, Trafford and I are suggesting is that there is more to the Rare Soul/Funk scene than we think. Like the music itself the scene has many different facets and people's tastes vary. I guess as a number of us get older where are the 300 soulies other than 'anniversaries' to fill a decent club venue?
