I know what you mean, but I bought all those when they were released, I used to be stacks of 'soul' records before I knew about N.S. If you remember the charts at that time, a good 20% was soul music so we were a bit spoilt for choice back in 70-74 time.

Despite this making me a bigger laughing stock than I already am, the Carpenters Gold cd is on in my car at the moment...though it was requested by my missus ("anything but talk sport or f*cking reggae")

Was the Jackson Sisters - I Believe In Miracles a chart hit? I'm too young to know!

and what about Chaka Khan - I'm Every Woman. Ain't Nobody's on the radio as I type - and it sounds pretty good

Oh Jones Girls - Nights Over Egypt and finally Rosie Gaines - Closer Than Close (90's though)

It was a great period, like you say spoilt for choice.

One i was listening to the other day that sounded great again (Maybe not to you Pete but who knows) from slightly later on in the period Mystic Merlin - I Just Can't Give You Up

That would have been almost exactly two years ago to the date Karen! I remember bumping in to you on the train when you were travelling there. Elaine and I were invited, but couldn't make it due to friends from Scotland staying over with us.

Two years? It's gone really quickly!

Absolutely. I remember the shock horror exclamations when I announced this as one of my all time favourite records a year or two ago. Did you hear Paul Weller massacre it last year?

Mark my words. If some enterprising DJ has the balls to play Mr Magic Man by Wilson Pickett, I guarantee it will become a major floor filler.

This is me who said Brazil would score 4 against Japan, and that Italy would beat Germany 2-0.

Somebody play it. You'll be on a winner. Think it was on RCA?

Hazell Dean - Searchin'

Shannon - Give me tonight

Jimmy Ruffin - Tell me what you want

In the 70s youth clubs and disco's could be tolerated because at least there were a few good soul records that we could stand around aloof too and pretend not to like because they were in the pop charts, but secretly we'd sing along to if the tune came on the radio at home or in the car.

Barry White, all really but especially - My first, My Last. Every Rose Royce, Stylistics, Hot Chocolate tunes were great to sing in the bath to.

The Tymes -ooh ooh ooh Miss Grace, The Floaters - Float on. Commodores - Brick House (Only song of theirs I likes).

Great thread, but I WAS too cool to like chart records...honest

80s tune Heartache Avenue by some one hit wonder group. Had a real northern Soul feel to it.

Sorry if anyones already mentioned it but one of the coolest, smoothest soul records must be William Devaughan - Be thankful for what you've got. Absoloute classic.

The Walker Brothers guest at 10.30 am in The Big Interview on VIP this Saturday.

Polo necks at the ready. Make It Easy On Yourself and listen..Sky Channel 0196.

Coming soon....John Fogerty from CCR!

Northern interview this weekend...Jackie Day.
