bought quite a few pressings coz i didnt give a toss about originals then, just wanted stuff like the Servicemen, Terrible Tom, Detroit Shakers etc so that we could get them played at our local youth club and make total twats of ourselves. think also got the Ringleaders of his record bar upstairs.

Didn't him and Kev run a record shop in Wigan :wicked:

He started off in the market, then it was Russ & Richard that ran the shop. Not just pressings there, Tobi Legend £12, as was R Dean Taylor. I did verbally sling shit at Simon Soussan in there once when he was giving first plays to Paula Rousell & the "other" version of Thumb A Ride.

Yes bought several pressings on my first visit as a newby in 1976 until some kindly older chap on the station next morning told me that they really weren't the real deal, and I should buy originals - great words of wisdom which I heeded with immediate effect. Then later bought a flaming Emeralds off of the booth when that was breaking in 1977. It was cracked round the groove, so I sent it back to Russ's Monster Imports for changing. Never heard a dickie bird from the ignorant pr8tt. And so started my love affir with Russ Winstanley :wicked:

Just to be pedantic, he started off OUTSIDE the market and his was the first stall on the corner, right outside Lewis's cafeteria adjacent to one of the markets many entrances.

Paul,

Didnt Mike Rolo also have a shop there at some time, still got a record with one of his stickers on somewhere - cant remember where shop/stall was?

Russ was selling records long before the market stall which was outside on the Market Street corner. He had a mail order record business operating from his Mum's at 10 Baytree Avenue. He opened that stall after the all-nighters started because he was flogging all the Selectacisc boots and Soussan stuff and knew that there was a demand from people who didn't go to all-nighters. He also sold originals there.

The shop was in Hallgate, not Wallgate, and the old sign is just about clinging on to the wall there. Richard worked in the shop, he didn't have a share of it. That shop sold thousands of great records at the prices of the day: Frank Wilson UK demos £3, Baby Don't You Weep £4, Hesitations album £4 and all sorts.

You could also order emidiscs from there. Two sides for about £3, any tunes you wanted. Any one-off (at the time) was available, no matter who had the only original.

Russ has his critics but he was only satisfying the demand that CD or Sevens sales meet today. The legitimacy of the records is probably as clear now as it was then.

Mike didn't have a shop but he used to sell records like the rest of us. He used to do mobile discos-weddings, the lot-and the stickers or covers with his details were probably to deter thieves.
