I'm from a pit village too, coalman used to dump 2 ton of coal on't backyard, i had to shovel it into coalhouse for me mam & dad.... then i discovered Northern Soul

I had a mug bought for me at the 1990 TAC Yarmouth weekender, a guy playing a sax on the mug, I still have the mug, & use it for my toothbrush & razors. I love the mug, as it reminds me of a fantastic weekender, & it will always be in my bathroom

I did buy a drinks coaster at Prestatyn, the ones that are mini records, as I think they look really cool, & it jazzes up (but its NOT a jazz record!) my boring desk at work... no one at work knows who Roy Hamilton is so my secret is safe

I am fine with venues selling merchandise (I don't have to look) as long as they don't take over the place, & I do feel that one particular stall at Prestayn was just too big for where it was situated, the sheer height of it was ridiculous, & had it been situated against a wall wouldn't have caused any disruption to what is usually a comfortable area to hang around.

Probably my biggest complaint about Prestatyn is that the stalls weren't open long enough. What I mean is as soon as The Impressions had been on, all the clothes stalls etc packed up and went to bed. It was like being in one of those indoor markets where everything is closed !

If thats true then the promoters of these venues should be reported. Sure Ady would at least like details.

When I smashed a tea mug once I did buy a Darrell Banks London demo replacement    .....But last time I looked Lorrine had planted something in it and it was out in the garden....

O.K. my turn in the confessional.

 

I've got a Stax mug which a friend brought me back from the Stax Museum in Memphis. Never felt the need to hurl it in the bin in case it is solely responsible for the dumbing down of a whole genre of music.

 

And I've also got a Stateside Logo T shirt which I bought myself. But here's the odd thing. I've never worn it. I think it looks so nice, all pristine and new, and that the first wash will spoil it. Now that does make me worry out my psychological state.

T shirts seem OK to me - I guess they can help to promote the genre.

 

Seeing someone down the pub with a Stateside T shirt would at least give me an idea that the wearer may just like similar music to me.

 

Mugs and coasters, on the other hand, seem a bit lame.

 

And for me, a gig is a place for dancing and meeting friends.

After having a good look around over the last couple of days, I've realised that I actually own some NS tat that I had forgotten about - My car has a clenched fist Northern Soul tax disc holder on the windscreen.

 

Just got back from work and opened the post, the British Red Cross have sent me some of their tat, a bookmark, two greetings cards and two drink coasters.

 

Anyway, more to the point, I'm planning to go to the Keele All-Nighter next month, which I notice has got a reggae room....I think I'll have a look in there to see if they suffer from the same problem, in the form of all things red, gold and green and little models of Rastafarians with huge erections, like the ones you see in gift shops when on holiday in Spain

Just to clarify - these were at the Droitwich event you attended, & not Prestatyn. There were many reputable music sellers at Prestatyn & it would be awful for folk to think it was going on there.

This all seems to be getting a bit personnel. In my post and I think a few others all that we were saying is that it spoiled the main room / bar, seating area and why couldn't it be back in the gaming machine area like it used to be. Not a problem selling the stuff but where it was sold . Steve

I did have Northern Soul Christmas cards literally on my mantelpiece for 2 or 3 Christmases.

 

From a friend who went way back.

 

I didn't think how tacky and hide them away, more - wow! - fancy him going to the trouble of sourcing them and remembering our shared interest from years gone by.

 

I don't even know where he got them or if they are sold at venues.

 

So it does take all sorts and all situations etc. etc.

Maybe one day some of that crockery might be collectable and very lucrative for someone like my grans Crown Derby or something. But then collecting and selling old things for profit isn't really in the spirit of the scene is it, its not what the scene is supposed to be about ? ....oh wait !

The problem is people's lack of imagination once again. Why hand over a hard earned shekel when you can make your own tat? In one of my gallery pics I'm wearing a lapel badge I'd crafted myself Valerie Singleton fashion. This was  late 1977, Wigan Casino, post TV cameras, so definitely not underground. I'd taken a Stanley knife to me sister's Four Tops Live At The Roostertail album, removing the Tamla Motown logo in the process. I then fixed that to a piece of cardboard with bostick and put a small safety pin on the back with sticky backed plastic et voila. If I'd been at Prestatyn I'd have had those tables over, Jesus in the temple fashion.

Finally what does bread and butter Soulie mean? Is that all the impoverished bastards had to eat of a Wednesday night during the three day week up north? You be hard pushed to define a scene as anything but "underground" in the pre-Wigan period, I'd have said. Someone from Fylde or St. Helens that went to the Mecca, VaVa's, Catacombs, Up The Junction etc weren't exactly mainstream Soul fans, were they?

The cards were hand made by our friend who sent them and he only sent them out to friends, no money, commercial gain was sought from them, they were never sold so no one other than those that were sent one would have got one.  He did spend a lot of time making them.

The ones I got were excellent. Really professionally done but with a sort of hand-made feel that gave them a personal touch. I kept them for ages but can't think where they would be now. Up in the loft is the only possibility . . . . .
