Two Soul Scene's

Recommended Posts

It's official there really is two soul scenes , there's the money making clown shows where you can by anything from casino coasters to frank Wilson kitchen bins playing your top 500 ,full of people who enjoy all of that and that's their choice.

then there's the true underground scene where the patrons crave new sounds be they 60's 70's funky soul this scene is mainly attended by those of use who championed the cause through the dark days of the 80's

which do you choose

There has always been several soul scenes and factions of scenes and even more people who don't associate much with any particular scene but who take the music seriously and get a lot of pleasure from it.

I think the only true "underground" movement in this country ended when the Tories closed the coal mines.  And coal miners didn't go underground to support any particular cause, they did it to make a living.

But variety is the spice of life.

This is just another oldies versus newies thread under a different guise. Trouble is there are no newies anymore. So there are golden oldies and post Wigan oldies. The so called underground scene are playing post Wigan oldies mixed with stuff that never made it and Funk.

I love the golden oldies and the post Wigan oldies, but I want to hear something new. But not Funk.

Like me the whole thing is dated...you would have to go a long way now to find a small 60s type club playing club, uptempo, mid tempo, class sounds now....cannot get into this funk thing.....most of that stuff I used to hear on those crappy cassette tapes that used to surface every now and again.

Scene has lost its originality bigtime imho...in fact just dont get the same buzz anymore..but its probably just a natural age progression thing...isnt it?

i actually believe theres several in attendance that dont have a past...just a present..of course most have been on holiday for 30 years but will try and convince you otherwise.....me i`d go for the 2nd of speedlimits comments but with a bit less of the funk.. the europeans influence....imo....dont mind a handbaggers do once or twice a year tho

Its not really that difficult ,  because it is or should be about personal taste

of course there is nothing wrong with "trying out"  different venues . but surely without influence  from what anybody else says .. you know if its your thing or not.

I posted this on another thread

it used to be so much easier;

Merchandise...Dont like......Dont buy

Music ..............Dont like.....Dont Dance

Venue.............Dont like......Dont go again

IMO  it  really is that simpel

btw ..going to an oldies all nighter in Nottigham  at the weekend ... cos thats what ilove ..

Hope every body as great weekend this weekend ..which ever venue they choose

Here's four  - Empty Bottles, That Driving Beat, Black Bee Soul Club and Monkey Jump. All small 'real deal' clubs playing rare and underplayed dancefloor Soul on OVO.

Your right Steve , there is the real scene and there is the divvy scene . Always has been and always will be . Underground for me , not The One Show (up and coming)

Hmmm.. some of you guys are a tad bitter. It's not worth it.

Though I hate the nostalgia crap and all the marketing, I will not be made to feel ashamed or embarrassed about still loving all of the fantastic records that got me into it in the first place. I'm no oldies dinosaur - I've got into more 'new' sounds in the last 6 months than ever in my life, they are constantly on my playlist.

Whether there's a 'real' scene and a 'divvy' scene I don't care to be honest. It's OK to take the best out of the whole thing.

If I was a youngster reading this thread I'd probably think twice about being a soul fan. We seem to hate ourselves and what we have become.

Just go and put a record on.

There are about six different scenes here in the North East alone!

I think that's an underestimate. Here in Scarborough (population 100,000) even discounting the two scooterist clubs that have their own events, there are at least five scenes. Three of them managed to have their nights on the same date in February! :hypo:

Good post but not sure about the 'think twice' comment, is being a 'soul fan' a decision? I can't help liking what I like, I didn't decide to like soul, maybe I'm reading it wrong,

Reading this thread it's as though people want their own particular taste to be validated by everyone liking the same tunes/venues as them. It's never going to happen, somewhere in a parallel universe on an alternate soul source there's a bunch of oldies fans wearing vests and bags moaning about how the original ethic of the scene has changed, since this newie/funkie/latiny/ thing became popular. As I've read this thread or it's type a 100 times before I'm dipping out and leaving it to the 'movers and shakers' to right the wrongs of the soul world

Two scenes....more like 8 scenes. The X over young smart European scene into original records ie funky early seventies and a bit of rnb...progressive people, northern oldies events now populated by baggy trouser wearing late forties onwards people playing the same old records on originals, local events playing boots,ex mods and current mods with their r nb and mid tempo soul nights.Rare soul nights...expensive originals....I just want uptempo northern soul Inc underplayed and newies.

Two scenes, three scenes, eight scenes, who cares.  Just go out on the scene you enjoy.

Sanity at last..........a few of my favourite night's have disappeared recently so have had to cast the net a little wider or on occasions stop in as there's nothing to float my boat but I can still find enough places to go to have a rather groovy time...........that works for for me!!

Cheers

People seem more bothered about what others are doing, it's getting boring constantly reading about it everywhere.  It's not like people who are moaning actually attend the places they are moaning about, if they do then they should change their social habits.

Chalky

We've been down this road too many times, couldn't really give a toss what others are doing unless they start shouting the odds about what I'm doing?I find it easy..........I go where I know I'll have a good night(there's lots of different factors that dictate that)..........I don't go to places I know won't be my cuppa tea..........easy really.

Cheers

It's Northern Jim but not as we know it... The scene has evolved to the point there's a scene for anyone who likes soul. Some scene goers kept the faith, others lost it but plenty never had it in the first place. Courses for horses really, Cheltenham for the purists, Ascot for day-trippers and Lingfield for the die-hards. However you look at it, the fragmented scene is what the punters want.

My philosophy now mate and hopefully nearer home.

Well why moan about it?  Why not just shut up and get on with it, I would imagine everyone knows where they are going, who they are going to listen to and have a damn good idea of what they are going to hear.  No one who goes elsewhere is going to bother them and vice versa so why is it a problem to some who constantly moan about what others get up to in their spare time.

Oh and Cheltenham is full of day trippers just like Ascot  :D
