How Do We Get Young Djs Spots St Events?

Recommended Posts

Absolutely correct.

I visited a venue recently which had a young man behind the decks playing boot after boot - when I pointed this out or mentioned I had them on 'different' labels :D I got a blank look!!!! - why do the promoters book them :g:

To bring in a "named " dj with the originals costs money , plus maybe travelling expenses etc , to get a young kid playing boots costs next to nothing as they will do it to get to dj or  £10/20 , more money to the promoter and the majority of the dance floor doesn't care

Named DJs aren't so just because they own original records, it's also because they usually know what originals to play and in which order to play them, and I am reliably informed most of them don't charge a kings ransom anyway,

If the 'majority' of the floor are up and down like a yo-yo, at the end of it all they haven't had a great night and often can't quite put their finger on why, don't go back very often, less money for the promoter,

Fairly recently I was at a busy Midlands venue which had Sean Chapman and a young DJ as guests, both played original vinyl for their sets. They were then followed by one of the promoters, who proceeded to play a good set - but all boots - couldn't quite believe it!

I would have thought everyone has to serve some time.  Just by going out and enjoy the nights, building their knowledge and collection.  Progress to doing local sets and then spread you wings.  You can't expect anyone who has been around a few weeks and not known to walk in to any venue and to start getting DJ sets, I can't think of anyone who would book anyone who hasn't taken their time to get involved both locally and further afield by way of supporting the venues.

OK ,but to be honest I never insinuated that someone walks in off the street with no inclination of the "northern soul " scene ,then comes back a week later with a box of records asking for a spot !

I don't know anyone who is dj'n ,who started as a DJ ,most get into it as a punter ,take to it ,buy records and then decide that they would like to DJ or even get asked if they fancy a spot .

My take was aimed at those who seem to think the best DJ's need to have 30 yrs of knowledge ,been there ,done it ,so to speak.

Ironically and on a slight tangent here ,but most of the traditional venues are still favouring stuff played at Wigan ,so would it be OK for a guy who was around in that era to mock a guy who didn't arive until the 80's ?and did this same scenario exist back in the 80's and 90's ?

And before you ask ,no I'm not discriminating ,I'm pro youth ,but just exploring the bigger picture .

Hopefully they will.

However, and as it's been discussed on here many times, there are lots of great originals for a tenner or less - perhaps a bit more thought and research should be used to put a playlist together.

We all had to start somewhere and I remember when Soul Sounds and OOTP appeared - we wouldn't touch them with a 'bargepole'  Perhaps people today have no scruples :(

Julian, you could discuss it on here a million times but whilever boots are around DJ's of all stature will perhaps use them,

personally i don't condone it but 60 to 70% of a paying crowd would be oblivious to a tunes background, price, labels etc are meaningless to them

I don't think anyone has said anyone needs to have 30 years of knowledge to be a DJ?  But with knowledge comes certain advantages as you well know and what has a 25 year old got that someone who has been DJing 25 years got except youth?  Absolutely nothing.

I'm all for a youngster getting sets if they can prove themselves but not simply because they are young.

Back in the 80's you certainly had to prove yourself.   You had all the top collectors and DJ's who were around in the 70's in your way but then again even they were still pretty young, not sure how you can compare past times with today's scene?  I don't see anyone mocking someone because they weren't around in previous eras?

What ,so this one young man means you and others generalise all other young people ?

The ratio of old DJ's far out numbers the younger ones and believe me ,the percentage of older DJ's playing boots ,playing same old ,same old mediocre sets !

Dj'n at a venue or club should be booked by the promoter on the basis that they are able to provide the right music and be able to deliver the goods on the night .

If the guy is playing boots then its obviously been ok'd by the promoter ,which is totally irrelevant to this topic .

The debate is about why aren't we booking young DJ's ,not why are we booking DJ's who don't play originals .

To think or suggest people need to serve their time (just how long that is beggars belief )is becoming a tiresome excuse used by those who have a need to keep the young from dj'ing .

The fact is and it is a fact ,there are a lot of young guys under 40 who never went anywhere near the casino ,torch ,wheel ,Mecca and so on but still have superb quality collections and knowledge too .

There are also plenty of under 30's cutting the mustard too ,but just as there are probably a larger percentage who aren't good enough ,there are equally more in the over 40 bracket who don't need to be dj'n !

I'm not here to make things personal ,but if the order of the day is about knowledge and collections plus the skills to deliver a set ...there are probably less than 10% who qualify ..and I'll be the first to admit ,I fail way short of that list !

At the end of the day ,we either give em a shot and nurture /encourage em or they'll go and start their own venues and add to the already congested soul calendar :(

Happy Easter and remember kids ....take advice from your parents and don't eat too much chocolate !

Yes Nev, we need to keep this debate in order and not get sidetracked!

Hows the brickin' goin mate.... plenty on?

I would love to spend the time, to come up with some witty, intelligent retort to this complete & utter BS, this is the reason you'll never see me & many, many other die hards in 95% of the so called current NS venues across the UK...... shocking !, but I cant be arsed, needless to say this is the kind of attitude & ignorance that prevails when you get lowest common denominator venues & music....I'm very nearly at the end of my rope TBH, but I refuse to let the c*nts win & take over the scene I love & cherish, I f*ckin swear I'll be there when these divs have upped n f*cked off again...if there are any younger souls reading this thread, avoid these people & venues like the plague, they are poison, but they dont have the staying power, & the cream eventually rises to the top...WTF has this so called scene come to, its time we had a cull !!!

Want the real deal read this....

When the odds are insurmountable, hopes are fading, your mental resolve can no longer cope..... send for Russ..... tougher than any bailiff :wicked:

I saw a named DJ at Blackpool last November play a bootleg of Dobie Grey. Out on The Floor.

I'm giving my original Dobie Gray to my 15yr old nephew as he's into the scooter scene & it's a great club record IMHO

also he is very keen on being a DJ  & he's got a great tastes in soul music

He'll be getting a set of original records of his choice of me for his 16th birthday next April

I find it strangely ironic that grown men in their 40's+ are arguing the toss, and resorting to name calling on a thread about 'youngsters'.

Please refer to my earlier post about playing nicely.

Thank you.

We know each other and it was tongue in cheek :)

I didn't call anyone?  I didn't see anyone arguing the toss either.

Was it really?
