Help wanted on a playlist for the early soul scene from the late 60's.

We are starting a classic early soul scene venue here in west yorks on Saturday April 26th on a bi-monthly basis & needing some help on what kind of tracks were played at the very early venues in the north of england, anybody remember the Plebs in Halifax, The Golden Disc, Keighley, west yorks, Harrisons Hoist, Earby Lancs, String Of beads Bradford west yorks, we are familiar with the Twisted Wheel tracks as of all the released CDs of the venue, any help would be appreciated. also early soul DJs wanted for future events please let us know if interested, contact details on the flyer.

So you advertised what you are going to play but you don't know what the tunes are .... And you haven't got any DJ's

Is that a bandwagon you've jumped on?

That's a bit unfair Paul..............they have identified James Brown as a soul singer. Research, research, verify, verify :)

Just to speak up for the organizer of this one.

He was approached to hold a Soul event in Keighley, but was asked if he could play the late sixties/early seventies stuff rather than the average same-old-same-old stuff.

So rather than guess about these, I told him to put the request on this site.

There are so called d.j's out there playing stuff that they think were played at the Wheel/ Torch/ VaVa's etc. but they haven't a clue as a lot of them were in nappies at the time.

He also runs another Soul event in the town which does cater for Northern, popular and rare heavy stuff (the latter coming from the box of Phil Dicks).

So he's not jumping on the bandwagon just being thorough.

I think every effort should be made to put them off. A club limited to the stuff that clubs played in a couple of year period, 45 years ago?.why? Like a soul scene battle re-enactment? what about all the records they didnt know then...wouldn't that be most records, and most of the best ones? Why not just play stuff you like? What's an 'early soul' dj!?..

Oh I dont get It, I cant even think about it any more

The request for this music policy has come from the owners of the club. Personally I think it is worth a try as I think the scene is awash with too many night playing the same old records. My good friend Fran OBrien is doing a similar event at the Plebs club in Halifax.

Perhaps a less wanky username together with a better explanation would have helped, just brought out the cynic in me, which isn't far below the surface I'm afraid.

i just couldn't see why anyone would put on a night playing music they knew nothing about.

Hey, a regressive music policy... Why not dig out the Wayne Fontanas and Spencer Davis Groups best tracks to set the floor alight... This was fine in the late 60's, but things have moved on a bit since then. Just mix the sets up with forgotten oldies and lesser known sounds and you can't go wrong. Just avoid the Flash Mc Kinley-Marvin Gaye-Charles Sheffield sequencers and you'll be alright...

I've been referring to it as the Sealed Knot Soul Scene for a few years now......................there are immense similarities between the Sealed Knot and the Northern Soul revivalist thing.

To be honest I wouldn't have thought the music policy at the clubs you mention would

have been much different from the Wheel, except maybe Plebs due to its

longevity and wide variety of acts over its lifespan.

Since imports were relatively unheard of until the back end of the Wheel

most of the stuff would have been UK releases.

Bri Phillips or Roburt, and, a few more on here should be able to steer you in the

right direction.

A Soul Sounds discography would be a good place to start.

Ignore the detractors on here, are Brooks & Jerry or Mel & Tim (Backfield) any

more played out than say Eddie Parker I'm Gone or that God awful Kurt Harris ?

Can't really understand why a username has anything at all to do with this request, but at least there are members out there with some positive comments which I'm sure the promoter of this event (not I) will take on board.

...might be a good idea to approach some of your local (older)lads and ask for their advice for specific local 'plays' at the clubs you have mentioned.Maybe try Stew Richards or Sammy Seaman or Swish......they're in your neck of the woods i think.....those lads have a wealth of knowledge...

I get it, think they want to run an authentic night in the spirit musically of legendary soul clubs? which is the premise of all venues surely? or rather trying to do it right which may involve asking and requesting advice and help, perhaps if more people did this then there would not be so many mediocre, average, similar nights on all over the place, I see very few venues who actually promote the back to our roots type of night which I think has the potential to get very soulful not clever or rare or underplayed or funky or crossover or oldies, newies cobblers,  authenticity, classic soul, is there a problem?

er, yes. if you like a certain type of soul sound, that's different from the current flavour, great, just start a night and play it. if you think that the blend of gritty soul, r&b and blue eyed you want to play is similar, in style and spirit, to that of the twisted wheel, for example, then advertise it as such, absolutely understand that...

but playing the exact same records, and deliberately limiting it to those is just bizarre. would you play a crap record if they did back then? Would you not play a great record, cos they didn't...even crazier! what if its a record they would have played, if they'd known it? what are the rules?

the thing is with old clubs - I totally get the interest in knowing what they played, real historical / cultural value in that, but copying it now? surely their djs were massively limited in knowledge compared with djs even 5 years later, babyish knowledge compared with a good dj now - why would you copy them? they had such a tiny % of records available to them, apparent from the playlists which feature mostly big sellers.

I'm sure they'd have loved to have had the records available that we do now, why remove 40 years of discoveries from the repertoire? absolutely defies belief.

however, if ive got the wrong end of the stick, and you just want to get an accurate impression of the sound enjoyed back in those clubs in order to re-create it...then I still don't get it, cos if you don't know what they played, why would you want to re-create the sound?!

sorry but you're going to struggle to explain this, I can tell.

Yes, as, you're absolutely right. If you're going to join a Northern Soul Forum to ask about music you know nothing about and requesting DJ's to play it as your first post, a really good user name is Casino Classics or something similar. Not only will you give credibility to your first post but you will also gain acceptance by your subtle nod to a venue considered important to the scene.

I'm truly ashamed of my cynicism, it has blinded me to the fact that this is a bona fide homage to Northern Soul by someone with a real interest in the music, the history of the scene and the future of it, and not a venue and promoter cashing in on one of the cyclical embracement of Northern Soul by the general public. It is to be applauded and hopefully they will give some sets to young DJ's.

A nice idea and if the event commences then I'll be taking a trip to Yorkshire for a taster.

It might be interesting to hear this type of set played as an hour themed set at one of the larger venues; if played over a period the punters get to listen to the entire night set in bite sized chunks.

Definitely a great idea, particularly as we won't have to suffer Mickey Moonshine, Paul Anka ,Timebox and all the terrible pop records that have no place on a 'soul' scene.

back then it was about the quality of the sounds and the DJ was anonymous , now its about a DJs big ego in trying to outdo all the other jocks with ever more obscure and very expensive vynil in order to make a name for himself.

quite a few but not all the obscure stuff is not a patch on the classics so the punters are being served a poor diet

Which classics though? Wheel, Wigan, Torch, Cats, Mecca, Stafford, 100 club? Point is I usually see comments like these from people who seem to think the period when they were on the scene is the one with the best music and when the classics were established, often quite blinkered and usually flags up a lack of experience. Personally I think classics span the whole 40+ years.

If you haven't got any DJs you'd be extremely hard pushed to better having Brian Philips and Julian Bentley on.

Freaking 'ell there's some grumpy folks jumping in here. If someone wants to run an early soul event and asks for help on this forum, and you went to one of the venues listed, why can't you just send them a list of stuff you remember being played ? No one's forcing you to attend or asking you if you think it's a good idea ... I'm not particularly into R n B but like a few tracks from the genre. If someone asked me for my top 5 R n B tracks for a venue I would either (a) Send them my Top 5 or (b) ignore the post
