Autographs Love's Gonna Do You In C/w On A Hot Summer Day In The City

I had the pleasure of following Flanny’s set at Great Yarmouth last week and boy did he spin some lush-stuff. Like many other Jocks at the moment he is passionate about harmonies - those Soulful Harmonies.

I sat next to him for 15 minutes watching him work the room, I noticed him pull out this delicious 1965 master-class in harmony. I thought YES now there’s a tune - but he ran out of time (talkin’ far too much) so I never got to hear one of my fave 60s mid-tempo creations. I really wanted to watch as “peeps” casually look at his revolving discs.. . to catch what they were…

Strange, but true I saw one for sale only hours later - when you hear it you will understand mine & Flanny’s enthusiasm for this style; so classy, so soulful and so very different to the NS-Norm.

But if you require more traditional dancers - just flip it over…it’s a stonkin’ instrumental that also needs to be heard..and danced to.

This weeks “sleeper” is pure quality - isn’t it. But with Motown’s contracted Gary & Chester Pipkin & Hal Davis at he helm - what else could you expect.

Jesse Davis Gonna Hang On In There Girl

An “100 Club” signature tune and in earlier days the Johnny Vanelli cover-up.

Today considered a top-drawer Northern Soul classic and in this impeccable condition… a NS Trophy-piece. Two flawless labels, original company sleeve and forensic inspection of the vinyls reveal only a few brief light brushes on the sleeve.

So take it away Jesse and show us what happens when a great vocal attacks the Mirwood Mistress’s lyrics - Sherlie Matthews again shows off her wordsmith prowess.

Undiluted Los Angeles Northern Soul in sweet sweet condition!

Maxine Brown Yesterday's Kisses C/w Ask Me

No rest for the British Demo Junkie - here’s another desirable Stateside DEMO.

We’ve led with the flipside as this is the original version of the much-loved BIg Maybelle 1965 Scepter release.

Brill Building heavyweights Tony & Brenda Bruno wrote both sides, Tony penchant for the big orchestral production is evident, on a mid-paced Northern Soul belter showcasing strings blended with horns and flute that are just blown aside by Maxine dominant vocal. AWESOME!

Flip it over and there’s a neglected gem to consider. As The Bruno’s milk an hobo to great effect, bringing in an angry string section, exposing the art of guiding an orchestra to display hurt, their skill is almost unparalleled.

TWO KILLER SIDES - and two of the best examples of The Sister-Big-City-Sound… ever made.

Presented here on a near impossible in 2014 format to capture in on..

THE RED & WHITE DEMO! the ultimate….

Fascinations Girls Are Out To Get You C/w You'll Be Sorry

A British trophy - A “Twisted Wheel” anthem in it’s alluring Green and White clothes.

Little or no sales patter could lift this offering any higher than it already sits - British Soul collectors will know this is the FIRST issue as some are confused that the UK SUE 45 looks older is in fact a re-issue that emerged just over a year later. On the back of huge demand created by EMI’s swift deletion and constant club-spins.

That wave carried through to 1971 when Polydor re-issued it on their MOJO vehicle that help quench demand but they kept it available on the catalog longer than their label predecessors.

In front of you today is by far the most-wanted ownership..and this copy is superbly clean!

Johnny Wyatt This Thing Called Love

Well, the black-stock copy fans have something to consider this week, only fair then that the larger contingent of White Promo fanatics also get something to muse over.

Here is a “Twisted Wheel” anthem that took the Northern Scene by a storm upon it’s first 1966 British release - one of the groundbreaking “stompers” that raised the bar and the pace of what the dancers required to be pumped-up by.

Totally determined Barry White project that fires a frenzied dance production epitomizing the Northern Soul Sound on every note; as the White Promo it is an historical press that set different standards.

Even though the temptation to wear this out may overcome you; just let it, as the PROMO has the same song both sides.. . double the play-life.

Condition of the vinyls and as you can see the labels is unblemished..irresistible.

Leroy Horne Don't Come Back (take Me Through The Changes) C/w There's A Way

A sleeper about to waken - and reveal why it’s been so desirable on two fronts for more years than I care to remember.

Top side is explosive piece of Northern Soul - a dance-floor detonator in waiting. Click the soundfile and let off the lead.. a Beast of a tune, witness Leroy’s growling vocal charging into the onslaught of brass.

Girls again support this lively dancer as it twists and weaves it way to a compelling instrumental break. Proper Northern Soul for those who can dance-the-dance…

Flip is not for dancers but for the Deep Soul fan who will know all too well this ballad rates so very highly but has yet to comp’d on any of those many “Deep Soul” CD’s, time this got heard.

I’ve loved this 45 for decades now - and thought it was time it received a wider audience - plus before you is the VERY RARE Green STOCK copy…

I’m Loving You For More Reasons Than One…

Triumphs I'm Coming To Your Rescue C/w The World Owes Me A Lovin'

THE” Northern Soul classics in exemplary condition, is there a better vinyl investment?

This variation is the PINK “A” on “Rescue” side - both labels are flawless, both vinyl play perfect and only reveal sleeve brush blemishes in strong light - not quite Mint minus all round but very close.

A “Golden Torch” anthem that sparked the 1972 re-issue that left the “Select-A-Disc” cellar, in the blink of an eye.. even that re-issue is a hard find these days. SO, click, to be vaulted back in time to the “Golden” pre-Wigan Casino days when this was considered a Top-Tune in the country inducing amphetamine-sodden dancers to perform all sorts of gymnastics.

Having now validated its pedigree, DO NOT overlook the gorgeous flipside, a Delilah Kennebrew composition of purely-executed mid-tempo Northern Soul by this three man, one girl team.

Most may never have taken time to listen to it….

Billy Peterson Jr. Color One Tear Black C/w Party Man

So you’re into SOUL - well try this Cincinnati creation… it’ll knock you dead.

Same song as the Double O Demingo’s, deconstructed and awakened by a lush Soulful-Stepping arrangement, sexy sax and an emotional lead vocal reinforced by glorious Sister’s harmony chorus; crafting a “steeper” of the highest calibre.

THIS IS SOUL - PROPER SOUL!

Flip it over for a rare Boogie groove - an unforgiving dancer using horns, twangy bass guitar, with those wild girls stepping out of their soothing state by ripping “oohs” and “chants” right into the heart of the tune.. Street level Boogie at it’s best.

RARE?

you darn know it is…

Grand Prixs Roar Of The Crowd C/w Lost Love

Dog-Rare 1966 Los Angeles Northern Soul with an impressive credits listing including such illustrious exponents of the sound as:

Billy Revis, William Powell & James Carmichael all involved in the crafting of this dancer..and you can feel it! When gathering of this calibre enter the studio you know something good is gonna come out.

Not one but BOTH sides nail the sound completely, I think maybe they borrowed a little from Arthur Wright with the brass arrangement and the dogged back beat just perfect delivered for Northern Soul dance.

Upon listening to this rarity for the first time in a very long time - I think maybe we have all missed a trick as today “Lost Love” sides pips “Roar” to the winning line as the best tune of the disc.. but both are brilliant aren’t they.

Two perfect labels - vinyl has some very light surface marks but as you can confirm there’s not even a murmur on the stylus.

Plays near perfect & offers two killer into the bargain..

SOME TUNE!!

Clarence Reid & The Delmiras Push A Little Harder C/w Like White On Rice

One of the driving forces behind Miami Soul is aided by his long-term studio partners Willie Clarke & Johnny Pearsall for Clarence’s one and only “Dade” release, and what a remarkable Northern Soul mover it is too.

Remarkable in two ways, firstly Clarence exploits a full studio of talent which includes a sophisticated vocal-group “The Delmiras” who span falsetto to Doo-Wop style “bass vocal” to enrich this Clarence Reid arrangement. Clarence’s lead vocal pleads and the smooth harmony lifts it higher.

A perpetual sax purrs away in the background, and “Impressions” style this recording wings it way into greatness.

So the 2nd remarkable factor is why oh why has this rarity not broken through into the Northern Soul scene, as big as it should have done? This is much more than a candidate for the “Rare and Underplayed” evenings, this quality 45 begs a larger audience.

One for the DJ’s and collectors looking for an under-valued scarcity, that in the right hands will fly…cause it’s just far to good not to.

Flip side is also a fine down-beat vocal group assisted horn-driven Soulful beauty..

Betty O'brien She'll Be Gone

Lover’s of the “Black’s” here’s a seldom-seen treasure.

There will be no confusion with the consummate “Daly City Bob” Promo Counterfeit press circa 1976 for the “Popcorn” market. Owning this “black” will lift all doubts on authenticity, with it’s shimmering rainbow strip and glowing yellow n’ gold Liberty logo.

So too the song; This is the quintessential “Popcorn Sound” that particularly this century has been welcomed with open arms by enthusiastic Northern Soul dancers.

So let’s allow Betty do the talkin’ - click the compelling sound file …before “She’s Gone..!”

Sir Henry Ivy He Left You Standing There

Rocketing in value on the back of visionary DJ spins.

This horn-consumed recording bridges all of Northern Soul barriers as it appeals to the Northern Soul dancers, The Crossover Worshipers and that edgy Funk infusion also makes it more than viable the Northern Soul outskirts, the more adventurous Rare Soul get-together’s..oops I nearly mentioned “Soul Essence” again..just perfect for that watering-hole.

Reminding me of the meteoric rise T. J. Williams had with his “Baby I Need You” this 1977 Memphis session carries the same irresistible charm as it pulls you into it’s flowing easy-to-dance-to personality

This disc of course is so much rare than T. J. Williams and at this moment in time it carries so much more millage.

Personally I can see this tune..growing in value and demand - I and many others find it utterly seductive!
