Big Ella Too Hot To Hold C/w Come Back Home

Strap Yourself in..

This weeks snarling Big Mama R&B-Rattler comes in the form of a very elusive Bobby Rush project.

In true Soul-Dominatrix style Big Ella whips up a storm with her defiant strutting vocal lashing against the ardent horns; this is full-on dance-floor penetration, there will be no hanging around the bar, when this truncheon of a tune paddles your ass straight onto the dancefloor…

An R&B commander that compels you to dance - this is BIg Mama Soul at it’s most bruising.

Rare? Bet your ass it is….

Kittie Doswell Just A Face In The Crowd

Crazy About Crossover?

You are!

Well this uncomplicated slice of the “Crossover Sound” from the streets of Los Angeles will absolutely delight. A 45 that already enjoys a strong reputation for rarity with it’s pure-quality is there for everybody to hear.

Kittie “Miss Soul” Doswell tackles the choppy hammond arrangement with an equally rippling vocal that softly “gravels” on all the right notes, as the addition of the floating horns ,elevate the tune yet another notch.

Crossover, a much-misunderstood Northern Soul genre, does not get any more convincing than this. Kitty is right up their with Ella Woods, Almeta Lattimore, Alex Brown etc as a Sister who delivers a tune with the consummate ease demanded in these mid-tempo masterpieces..

1973 two years earlier than the disco-disaster that led so many artists away from Soul. This is an unspoiled, from the heart dancer.. so refreshing to hear and shuffle to.

When it’s sung like this - “Crossover” - Yes, I’m totally crazy ‘bout it.

Mr. Soul What Happened To Yesterday C/w You're Too Good

Do records of this calibre need embellishments..

I must say I’m motivated enough to pull out every thinkable vinyl-superlative I’ve ever thought of..

But it’s not required because this 45 sits in the top 50 most-wanted - least seen - most respected Northern Soul 45s ever played..

Ridiculously RARE - Crazily sought-after - and so damn deliciously, ludicrously, insanely, preposterously, implausibly, stupidly-fine NORTHERN SOUL!

Richard Searling’s former Maurice McAllister’s - Your Love Is Slipping Away - “cover up” of course….and since those heady days… most collectors have yearned for a mere sniff of a copy..

Now’s your chance…

Some light surface marks - but as you can hear plays loud clean and true..

Ernest Mosley Stubborn Heart C/w Leep On Loving Me

A Northern Soul classic with a huge reputation for being a “Thinking-Man’s” oldie, that has now been an elusive capture for fully 40 years.

From the first note this record explodes into pure Northern Soul. Blasting horns, Woo-Woo girls precede the intricate vocal of Mr. Mosley. Who has the gift of changing key at will, with the brass accompaniment never out blowing his expressive style.

Perfect instrumental breaks, punctuate this dancer at all the right times and those girls coos just get stronger and stronger..

THIS IS NORTHERN SOUL that will catapult many back to “The Pier” and the groundbreaking sets of Ginger Taylor, Ian Dewhirst, Poke etc. It was a Northern Sea imperative play. Having said that The Mecca, Casino & Yate were also simultaneously jolting to its power.

This copy has two clean labels and only two light turntable retrieving surface marks stop this beauty getting a much higher grade - as you can hear it plays LOUD clean & true. Like it always has done…

Billy Floyd My Oh My C/w Time Made You Change (your Mind)

Without question one of the least encountered 45’s on the legendary Philly label - and what an heavy-weight slab of Northern Soul it is too; with BOTH sides giving-up stand-out Northern Soul crammed with heaps of blaring-brass and just as lively bustling n’squealing Soul-Sisters enhancing the two arrangements.

Let’s start with the side that was played in the mid-70s; A thumping East Coast dancer with compelling Latino influences on the trumpets and Billy’s highly tuned vocal bouncing on every beat; Soaring horns are present throughout and the girls timely choruses just add the finishing touches, you’d think..but no, from outta nowhere comes a xylophone break. Everything is in there crafts one of the fullest arrangements you could every wish to hear.

So to the B-side which if it’s possible is an even better Northern Soul dancer, which in the late 90s & early 2000’s received spins from a couple of very prominent DJ’s notably Butch & Carl Willingham.

This side is pure-distilled Northern Soul with no attempt being aimed at commercial viability. All the same ingredients used to full effect - extra-shrill girl penetrate the horns and Billy again reaching those high notes with ease..

TWO great sides, magnificent condition and Turin-Shroud RARE!

Jimmy Hughes Goodbye My Love C/w It Was Nice

Flawless you will never find a better copy.

In the UK The Searchers hit the charts with this incredible song, originally recorded in 1963 by Robert Mosley and titled “Goodbye, My Lover, Goodbye” which was retained by Jimmy Hughes on his Fame release. It seems Island tweaked the title to cash in of The Searchers success as Pye shortened it for UK release.

So, before you today is Rick Hall’s Muscle Shoals, Alabama rendition of this potent beat-ballad. Produced by the Muscle Shoals Master himself, who guides Jimmy’s incredible vocal-powers to float on a raft of gentle horns and cooing girls.

Flip it over for a strong R&B “Wheel” style dancer.

British collectors condition is just as blinding as the two songs, we are struggling to find any flaws what-so-ever.

Bobby Freeman C'mon And Swim - Part 1 & 2

From the foggy Bay Of San Francisco to steamy confines of Manchester’s “Twisted Wheel” club; Before you today is a 1964 British DEMO in near perfect condition!

An hipshakin’ Sly Stewart creation that became a 60s “MOD” fave; Then in the mid-70s receiving a huge revival at The North Sea Temple Of Soul under the frequent spins of iconic but sadly deceased Cleethorpes DJ Nev Wherry.

Neville had an uncanny gift of reviving a neglected classics, making them bigger than they were first time round. Cleethorpes “Winter Gardens” dancefloor shuddered under this turbo-charged dance-craze thumper with an outrageous keyboard instrumental break… memories are flooding back.

There are so many “Twisted Wheel” dedicated evenings these days, I feel a 3rd Tsunami wave of enthusiasm to do the “Swim” coming on… so why not drown in the glory of this fabulous disc in it’s rarest form!

Syl Johnson Do You Know What Love Is C/w The Love I Found In You

This is “SP-1 20079” mix in magnificent condition.

Drum roll, banging piano intro lift the anticipation up for a vocal to match.

Of course Syl’s muscular snarling is just perfect to carry the dynamic production, and the two aspects pump out proper-Northern Soul.

We think the condition, The diff. mix and the soundfile will convince much more than our words, that this is not a record that requires pause for thought.. ..this is proper Northern Soul that demands ownership..

Intentions I'm Losin' Your Love C/w I'll Search The World

in the best tradition laid down by those groups like Huns Review, The Magnificent Men, Detroit Soul, Oxford Knights, Lost Souls, etc. here is another in a long line of fabulous 60s Northern Soul from horn propelled groups with growling lead vocalists dripping with attitude.

Horns are one thing, insane sax is another - listen to that down & dirty blowing punctuating the crazed hammond work. Every time the lead pauses for breath a barrage of brass takes his place.. this really is strong-stuff that will rattle your Northern Soul brain.

Notice we never mentioned the term “Blue-Eyed”; Do take time for the awesomely soulful flipside to kick in - you’ll understand why.. harmony vocal-group 60s Soul at it’s most gorgeous.

This 45 ticks all boxes for urgent-ownership.

Sugar & Sweet Hands Out Of My Pockets

Hey Girl, Get Your Hands Outta My Pockets” Does R&B get any more dominant than this…and rarity so far has stopped this Run-Away-Truck from wrecking the dance-floors of the scene.

An instant dance-floor-detonator from the street of Los Angeles where this local duo recorded over 10 offering for the Northern Soul scene all small indie label delights this offering being the rarest and most desirable.

Take a listen to a pairing that know exactly how to attacks a production with Calvin Harris arranged some insane keyboard work that just about keeps up with these two hardest vocalist!

Driving R&B at it’s very, very best! Condition is like new!

Originals Good Night Irene C/w Need Your Lovin' (want You Back)

Motown were so much more than just the greatest writing and producing factory of the 60s. Hitsville also had capacity for taking “standards” and transforming into the Motown Sound.

“Do What You Gotta Do” “It’s All In The Game” jump to mind but this deconstruction of the Huddie Ledbetter signature tune is the standout achievement of the team’s delving into other artist’s work.

So who better to do it than Stevie Wonder’s biggest influence Clarence Pauling highly skilled Motown producer/writer.

Now listen to a Blues classic given the CP Motown treatment - conjuring up a stunning Northern Soul experience.

No doubt you’ve noticed this offering is the 1966 Green & White Demo, once again TMG collecting becomes irresistible.

But you may not have noticed that the flipside offers double the pleasure, although overlooked, this too is spot-on vocal-group Northern Soul with the added spice of Mike Terry’s burping Baritone Sax honking away in background.

Awesome.. 3 times over..

Village Choir Along The Beach

Right on the money for today’s “upfront” segment of this burgeoning Northern Soul scene.

From the first horn blow, the signal is to DANCE!

A sexy blend of jazz/soul/funk is whisked up into an hectic dancer decorated by a tapestry of rich vocals. The male lead purrs as trumpets blow their approval, then in total contrast an high pitched Sister-vocal reply squeals her part so well, brilliant improvisation.

The horns force up the songs presence into a tune you just can’t ignore - this sleeper is so very infectious just waiting to the correct DJ to push it past it’s current rarely-seen rarely-heard status…

LOVE IT!! …..really love it!

Dynells Call On Me C/w Let Me Prove That I Love You

A totally pristine copy! Of this lush Philly offering.

Larry Brown & Company guided by the gifted hands and ears of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff embellished by the perpetually skilled influence of another slick Bobby Martin arrangement.

All this exceptional input crafts two glorious vocal-group dance grooves that sit in that category of the “Thinking Man’s” Northern Soul. Although both titles were release of tiny street-level indie labels. This major label release offering two-for-the-price-one is consider by many as the “smart” way to own (we can see the purist scoffing and the very idea)

So click the soundfile to be persuaded that there are not many 1968 major label releases that offer this depth of quality on one disc.

Condition is blinding in every respect

Kevin King Lear The Snake

On The Way To Work One Morning…”

Love it or hate it there is no getting away from the fact that Oscar Brown Jnr’s lyrics are indelible story-telling - at it’s most memorable.

So if you don’t want to follow other DJ’s and enjoy giving the crowd something different, by getting a step away from the NS-norm. Check out this extremely convincing 1969 British take by Kevin Lear, guided by a man who is no stranger to drawing influences from “Soul Music”.

So click the soundfile and we think you’ll be more-than impressed by Des Champ’s reworking of Al Wilson’s Northern Soul anthem .

Good ain’t it…

But it’s gets even “Gooder” when you hold it in yours hands; the beautiful sight of Red & White promo label jumps out at you as it snugly sits in it’s birth-sleeve and the vinyl is truly immaculate. Great tune in dream-condition…

Be different and leave “Al” at home..

Quite low winning bids on some of these. Ernest Mosley in particular. Knackered copies go for 300 to 400.

Nice Syl Johnson issue as well.

I thought that too

Is 200 a fair price for the Intentions nowadays?
I tried to shift one on here and ebay with a torn lable on one side, but didn't get a sniff.

Sounds about right Carl. I'd have tried to shift it through JM but with the lable tear didn't think it would be auctionable.

Hi Mikey, Hope you're well mate ?

Even when it was getting quite a lot of plays (in the South at least) 5/6 years ago I only paid £40

Perhaps the funk boys have taken to it. One side at least is a bit too funky for me.
