Hi, I'm Keith Hughes and I can see I have a few friends here already - hope to make more!

I bought my first soul record - "Heat Wave" by Martha & the Vandellas - in 1963. Back in those days, I used to visit London clubs such as the Marquee, the Flamingo and the 100 Club - and an obscure basement club in Belsize Park called the Witches' Cauldron. That's where I first heard many of the soul sounds I still love today. Anyone else remember that place?

I began serious Motown record collecting in the 1970s. As a programmer by trade, it seemed obvious to me that the way to catalogue what I had and what I wanted was to build a Motown database. That database grew and grew, with a lot of help from friends, and today the tip of its iceberg is visible at www.dftmc.info, a site I run with Ritchie Hardin. I supply the data, and he does the visuals.

In the late 1990s, someone told Harry Weinger, Motown A&R supremo at Universal Music, about my database. He called me up and asked me a question or two about early Barrett Strong recordings, and that led to a working relationship that's turned over the years into a friendship. And it led to my becoming co-producer of "The Complete Motown Singles" series, which finally concluded early this year (2014) with the release of Volume 12B.

In 2010, Ace Records of London invited me to compile a CD of Satintones recordings. That venture has also turned into a series, and we're on our 11th Ace/Motown CD at the moment, a collection of recordings by the Contours and Dennis Edwards titled "Just A Little Misunderstanding". The CDs in the series have been produced by Mick Patrick and Tony Rounce - I find the music and usually write the booklet essays, they do the real work in getting the records out.

And that's enough about me!
