Alfreton Reunion

alfreton saturday night

well the event started for me at 10:30 am ,at this time i'm down at the leisure centre getting all the tables, staging etc sorted out, yeah the guys at the leisure centre do it but i like to make sure everythings done right.i get that all sorted by about 1pm,before you know it its 6pm and i'm back at the leisure centre helping get all the sound equipment in and setting it up,since my last event there in 2005 the leisure centre have added a sound limiter ,but im assured it wont cause us any problems,me thinks different.anyway we set up and try the sound and that little red light is flashing like a beacon on a cop car lol,its just not giving us enough sound so i have to go look for the bar manager and see if he can adjust the settings for us,he tweeks it up.still no good and the sound guy tells me hes not stopping for the event,i'm thinking oh my god i can see disaster ahead.Well i'm just not prepared to let something like this ruin the night for everyone at alfreton after so much work has gone into it,so i say to the sound guy lets by pass the limiter,i see a big grin on his face and off we go looking for another power source, bingo we are in luck.we get the sound set up and by this time its 7:30 steve and oggie are in the building eager to get on the decks, ive still got a few bits n bobs to sort out,the melton lads start off with a few rarer sounds and a bit of r'n'b and i'm thinking i hope there not going to do a compleat spot like this ,but steve and oggie use there heads and as soon as the crowd are coming in they change the style of music accordingly.its now 8pm and we have a fair amount of people in the venue,i get some grief of a trader because another guy has taken his table,i really dont have time for this childish behavior ,ive set out the tables and done my bit, quiet frankly i dont care who has what table, first come first serverd. 8.15 the crowd are really coming in force now but everythings under control and going to plan up untill about 9pm then they are coming in so fast the bar just cant serve them fast enough, theres about 250 people in by this time, and for some reason people have chosen to form a que at the bar, something ive never seen at alfreton, all well and good,a fair way of getting served but the tailback is getting in the way of the door and its becoming a problem for my wife pat to actually tell whos coming in the venue and who's queuing for the bar.meanwhile graham weavers banging out 100 mph stormers at the crowd and the floor is heaving. the atmosphere is electric by this time and you can really feel it.people are walking in and saying wow this is how a venue should be,the temperature in there is building up as well.its about 9:30 now and pats gagging for a fag so i take over on the door,i'm usless at it lol god knows how she copes but she did a great job.by this time 10pm is approaching fast and ive had so much going on my head is spinning before i know it its 10pm and i'm up on the decks with glyn williams,he's the guy i originally started alfreton with back in 97,where do you start so many of the old alfreton sounds have been played,i settle for opening with wade in the water, its a safe opening but it gives me time to settle in. off we go the floors away i followed up with the contours and a little misunderstanding, its glyns turn now he kicks off with a old play at alfreton alternative version of i cant change - ynonne baker, its just like old times me and glyn up on the decks together and im feeling pretty good,we belt out some real classics and a few 70's phillip mitchell, bettye swan etc plus a instrumemental of suger baby im memory of derek allen and before you know it im on my last track so i finish with the ultimate alfreton play ,which the other dj's forgot to play, edwin star - time 11pm now and its time to hand over to our special guest dj terry davies ,who im really thankfull for him coming down and coming out of retirement to do us a spot.i cant remember terrys first record but i know it did the job,buy this time im gagging for a pint and have to dash to the bar, terrys knocking out some class northern and the crowds just loving him,im just starting to go round and say hello to a few people in the crowd because i've been so busy i dont even know whos in yet, pat's finished on the doors and i havnt got a clue where she is either lol.bump into some old faces from the past at alfreton.the st ives lads, peterbourgh crew, chris from sheffield wow must be 5 years since ive seen him.loads from doncaster, sheffield and a big supprise little t made it from rotherham this is just how it used to be, you came to alfreton and saw people there you hadnt seen in years and years even some of the old crowd from round alfreton was in there, glyns ex casino crew.but so many faces in there i didnt know and all soulies.i can honestly say i dont think there was one non soulie in there, mansfield lots in, chris collins long time no see,we still didnt get that chat mate,he was in a rush for the bar when i bumped into him,the place is full, the atmosphere electric and everyone wet through with sweat even the record bars are buzzing with people. everyone i spoke too was saying what a fantastic night and i should be doing more than one a year, but for now im leaving things as they are because theres a lot of refurbishments taking place at the leisure centre and at the moment i dont know how these with effect us regards soul nights, before i know it rob smiths up on the decks, this guy has got to be one of the most dedicated people i know he lives northern soul and i have so much respect for him,he has to be one of the nicest guys i know.anyway rob pulls all the stops out and the crowd just keep dancing and dancing,a few have left to go onto stoke by this time, but theres still plenty in.ive actually managed to find pat now and ask her the time its 12:45 and i'm thinking god its all over,it went so fast,i look at the floor and think these people are not going to want to go,but sadly they must and its all over untill next year, rob finishes with a classic ender, one of the late derek allens fav's timmi yuro - it'll never be over for me,and never a truer word, getting a little bit emotional here now because alfreton meant so much to me and when i closed it back in 2001 it was like part of me died, but thanks to all the people that brought it back to life on saturday night i just cant thank you enough, you will never know how much it ment to me seeing you all there once again

ian marriott,excuse spelling etc :D

BTW i'm doing a new soul night with glyn williams at the LEABROOKS CLUB on FRIDAY 11th AUGUST if anybody fancys comming down check out https://www.soultimepromotions.com/ for details and also some great photos taken at alfreton 2006 reunion

Hi Ian didn't make it to the Leabrooks night I forgot all about it. Saw Pete Taylor the next day & he said it was great night with some top tunes played. See you & Glyn are back together, not sure why he makes comments about Bentinck on the forum, I thought all the local soul nights & promoters stick together & support each other in anyway they can. Should be able to make it to the one at Riddings. See you there if not before Cressy

ps if you get chance to play the Al Green I won't dance to it but love hearing it. Been trying to

find a copy for years & still no luck

hiya cressy

just read these posts ,got to admit this is the first ive know about it,so i was a little confused when i read your post, ive checked out bentink posts and am now a little wiser, and i see glyn has appologised for comments made so i hope all is sorted out between you,but i can only emphasise the fact that i am not responsible for other peoples actions and that this is a alfreton soul club post and that glyn williams is not involved with alfreton soul club,so i would appreciate any further articles regarding this matter to be posted on the www.soultimepromotions.com site, saw a al green for sale at cleethorpes this year,a scottish dealer was selling it,if you can find out his name etc hes worth a try he wanted a ton for it i think.

thanks ian
