There are thousands of deep soul tunes that are worthy of mention IMO.

Off the top of my head, here are some that I constantly go back to:

Winfield Parker - When I'm Alone - RU-JAC

Lee Moses - Bad Girl - MUSICOR

Marvin L. Sims - Danger - REVUE

Truth - Come Back Home - SOUNDS OF CLEVELAND

L C - Put Me Down Easy - SAR

Hank & Claude Carbo - I Still Love Her - CASTLE

Jimmy Holiday - I Can't Stand It - DIPLOMACY/KENT

Dan Penn - I Need Some One - MGM

Lonnie Mack - Why - FRATERNITY

Knight Brothers - Temptation's 'Bout To Get Me - CHECKER

Trumains - Girl Don't Let Me Down - VIGOR

Tyrone Davis - A Woman Needs To Be Loved - DAKAR

etc. etc. etc.

There are sooooo many. thumbsup.gif

Some of my favourites............

Spencer Wiggins "I Can't Be Satisfied" MGM Sounds of Memphis

Kim Tolliver "I'm Losing The Feeling" Chess

Melvin Van Pebbles feat Jo Armstead "You Cut Up The Clothes In The Closet of My Dreams" Stax

Joe Valentine "I Can't Stand To see You Go" Ronn & Val

I can't let a thread on Deep Soul go without once again mentioning the George jackson Soul nights at Smersh in London, where Mark, Anthony, Gareth and guests have been presenting deep soul music as a serious alternative to the overplayed sounds available elsewhere, for the last six years or so.

Regulars will have enjoyed the fine selection of deep soul tracks on the give away CD from last year. Particularly Gareth's lovely copies of:

George Hughley "It Hurts Me Too" (Fairlane)

Lee Mitchell "How Can You Be So Cold" (H&L)

For those that may have missed out take a listen to the George Jackson guest radio show on the Soulcast website to hear some of the finest Deep soul and crossover:

Sadly no idea. The other side isn't a half bad more uptempo number as well. Didn't Johnnie Mae Matthews produce this, or have some association with the Bon label?

hate to say it but I got my rather battered but eminently playable copy from e.bay when Pete Smith told me about this new fangled internet auction thingummy some years ago now. No one else bid on it so it cost more in post I think.

Never thought I'd even have one in my hands, let alone get to buy it. First got to hear it when Rod Dearlove played it to me down the 'phone, I was bowled over. Sorry, not for sale!

Thats a great site Chalky, nice one.

Talking of Rod...dug some tapes out of the cupboard and there was a few of his with oddball stuff, his faves and raves, fair bit of deep...every type of soul, some good stuff. Just need to get it all on to cd now.

Sorry, don't know anything about the musicians... But you're absolutely right. That's an utterly brilliant tune. Can't believe how I forgot it in my list above. It's such a blasting and primitive track. Love it! blush.gif

Petestoneisland has launched me on a deep soul afternoon. My vote in this category has to be Doris Allen  with 'Shell of A Woman". I don't have it to hand so I'm having to listen to it my head. A brilliant sound.

What other Deep Soul sounds are worth a mention?

The other side to Ken Boothe (The One I Love) is fantastic aswell.

Not as fantastic as Johnny (Dudley Williamson?) & The Attractions - 'I'm Moving On' though. Rock Steady real cool and as deep and soulful a record as you'll ever hear.

Fave US, Jimmy Conwell, 'Let It All Out'.
