Vocal Or Instrumental

All About the SOUL Mick Boyle

Dont know if this has been done before

Got a free CD from Blackhearts soul night last Friday night and on it is cigarette ashes and i do think it is top notch but its absolutely smashed by That Beatin Rhythm and Theirs That Mountain.

Also on it is Ann Robinson World of Happiness and I think this is so much better than Bird Walking.

Got thinking about other instrumentals like Soul Steps The Dogs and again I prefer the vocal im So Sorry.

Gave a lot of thought to it but couldn't find an instrumental that i preferred over the vocal

Is it just me, am I just a sucker for all those silky - Heart throbbing - gritty - Tear jerking Vocals

Are there any instrumentalist that outshine there vocal version

Mick

That Beatin Rhythm and There's That Mountain got played before Cigarette Ashes (CA). When CA turned up at the Cats it was a revelation and everyone preferred CA. I have no preference , just depends on mood sometimes. Ans, if memory serves me right, CA sold for a fortune (£80?) in 1972 whic was about 6 weeks wages for many back then!

I'm usually a vocals over inst man but one that goes against that for me is the inst side of The Contemplations(Rock Candy)-Alone With No Love Dontee. Both brilliant sides but the inst just shades it for me.

Cheers

Going back in time, I didn't ever imagine LJR's Penguin Breakdown being anything other than an instrumental, still don't think the vocal compares.

Ditto Al Kent, You Gotta Pay the Price, none of the vocal versions since hold a candle to it.

Although the Supremes had a good try.......

I sold a Ric Tic white demo of this (Festival Time) the other day and it sounded completely different to the Gordy version, the main strings were almost in the background as if it was playing a stereo record but one channel was almost out, bizarre!  I thought it was the record player to start with.

I know these tracks are top class Pete and if you want to throw some moves on the dance floor then instrumental is king.

Now we are all older and if your at home in your easy chair in your music room, earphones on and a glass of bourbon in your hand wouldn't you sooner have your eardrums tickled by the magical vocals of Luther Ingram rather than some hairy arsed drummer

Christ no, I hate the vocal version and wouldn't give it the time of day - and Bari Track is the most "Northern" Northern record ever!

Prefer 'I'll belong to you' - Milton Wright to 'The gallop' which was played first.

Remember one night on the wall at Wigan some guy trawling the seller's going

"Have you got the gallop",  thought it was some sort of tropical disease :)

And the vocal 'as long as you'll love me' is Eeek ! POP ! While the 'Sidra's theme' is brilliant "soundtrack" type of thing with that Detroit SoundZ. LUVIT

I'm not in the known, but 'I belong to you' sounds like a fake thing to me, like made for the Northern scene. With the tapes, licences and so on. It never sounded right to my ears and it has no early 7T's original release. I always assumed that way. Am I wrong or right here ?

Sidras theme is a good point

The vocal always does better than the ins on the dance floor

or it does at the places I go to.

vocal for me nearly every time, although I do actually prefer Soul steps to the vocal. I know we've done it before, but I don't really feel much soul content in instrumentals, don't shoot me I'm only saying :)

As I tend to singalong, gurn and dance at the same time I must admit I'm a vocals man all the way, though I do have a soft spot for the dirty sax of Bird Walking, even though I think the vocal version is sublime.

I thought this is a soul forum, how can an instrumental be called soul. An instrumental (along with that pop music with the right beat) played on the Northern Soul Scene  is what we used to call northern dance music back in the eighties.

Nearly always vocal for me but there are exceptions ...

Sounds of Lane - Tracks To Your Mind (can't abide Hey Sah Lo Ney)

Trampps - Penguin At The Big Apple (over Zing Went The Strings)

Ramsey Lewis - Wade In The Water (over any vocal I've heard)

Wingate's "Love-In" Strings - Let's Have A Love-In (over Flaming Embers)

Double Cookin' - The Checkerboard Squares - Villa.

The unissued vocal version is well made, but is not as good. I feel it loses atmosphere and sounds cluttered, much prefer Double Cookin'

P.S. the vocals by The Magicians and called "(Just A Little) Faith And Understanding"

Soul is a feeling and I think it can be expressed with instruments. I think some Sax lead instrumentals are as soulful as singing.

All records are instrumentals with vocals!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the scene, but as far as I can recall it's always embraced instrumentals, I'm not a big fan myself, but their place in northern (the word you're conveniently ignoring) scene is pretty much cemented

Dont want start an argument here,

Fully understand comments on soul is from the heart and instrumentals cant tell the story of the lost love

even so the musicians do ooozzee soul out of there instruments.

Personnel the vocals finish it off for me

Agreed, soul it ain't but I was there and looking over the balcony when Rhino was at it's height is still the most jaw dropping sight I've ever seen in my life.  Yeah, there were other floor packers at the time that produced atmos ie Bob Relf, Vel-Vets etc but Rhino took the roof off the place. If I could just have one 3 minute video clip to show it would be that, the clapping during the rise to the crescendo, and the crescendo itself about 90 seconds in was just out of this world.

The record still gives me chill to this day ...

and I'm a "deep soul" freak

It's what we used to call Soul Music back in the sixties and seventies. Tell me Green Onions don't have soul.

Don't stop looking - Anne D'andrea is my contribution. I can't understand anyone liking the vocal, it sounds like something my mum would have liked!
